Our Stuart family goes back to the splendidly named Lewis Lodvick Stuart, whose wife Anne Stewart is named on the birth records of their children. We do not know from where the Stuart family came, but according to John Stuart, who farmed Quarryhead (born 20 May 1887) in a conversation with Alexander S. Watt in 1950, three brothers, Roderick, Douglas and Ludvic, came cattle raiding from Ross and Cromarty and never returned. Bella Kynoch tramped from Ross-shire and married Roderick in the parish church of New Deer in 1747 (the parish records of New Deer are missing for this period), and they farmed at Mitchelhil, also known as Auchmaliddie.

The story handed down through John Watt, the uncle of Alexander S. Watt, was that the three brothers were caught cattle stealing in New Deer and never returned to Ross and Cromarty. The two stories are roughly the same, and we trust they are correct.

The family history below is researched from Scotland's People.
