John Arter, Jr. & Sarah Heller

John Arter was the fourth child and second son of John Arter and Anna Maria Diehl. The will of John Arter, senior, proved July 4, 1807 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, identifies a son named John, who was also named co-executor with his brother Abraham. The Deed of Partition for the sale of the property of John Arter, deceased, identifies John and his wife Sarah.

John Arter is one of six known children of John Arter and Anna Maria Diehl. The earliest records relating to the Arter family are found in Longswamp Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The Longswamp church recorded the baptisms of four of the Arter children, including a Johann Jacob born January 17, 1780. This is believed to be the same person as the son John referred to in the will of the senior John Arter. The family moved to Augusta Township in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania about 1785, and was living in Shamokin Township in Northumberland County by 1797.

The younger John Arter married Sarah Heller.  This is confirmed by the will of Sarah's father, Hans (John) Dieter Heller, which was signed 10 September 1816 and proved 7 November 1818.  In this will John Arter is mentioned twice:

"In the name of God amen, I John Dieter Heller of Shamokin Township in the County of Northumberland and state of Pennsylvania Yeoman…the Residue of my Estate I do give and divise to my Eight Children and Two Grand Children,...the one ninth part thereof I give and divise to my daughter Sarah Erter her heirs and Assigns forever,..., and Lastly I do nominate my beloved Son Joseph Heller and my beloved son in law John Erter Executors of this my last will testament..."

Northumberland County deeds record a sale of land in 1815 between John Heller and John Arter of Catawissa.  This John Arter was most likely John junior.

Joseph Meiser lists two children for John, Jacob and Mary, and identifies Mary Heller as the mother of both.  Meiser's information comes from the death and burial records of Mary and Jacob., and presumably, the original records for the death of each child identify the mother as Mary Heller.  This is apparently a mistake, or it could mean that Sarah Heller had a second name of Mary, such as Mary Sarah or Sarah Mary.  However, the records of Jacobs or Reeds Church include the April 22, 1810 baptism of Johann Jacob, son of Johannes Erder and wife Sally, who was born May 21, 1809. (Sally is a nickname for Sarah.)  In addition, the wife of John is identified as Sarah in the deed of partition for the property of John Arter senior, deceased.

Blanche Arter lists three children for John and identifies Sarah Reed as the mother of all three: Jacob who married Jane Woodside, Rachel who married Nicholas Willett, and Mary, who married John Pencil or Pensyl.  We now know that this is incorrect.  However, Sarah's marriage to John Arter might have been her second. The 1850 census for Shamokin Township lists a Sarah Arter age 73 living with John Wilkison. This is almost certainly the widow of John Arter.  John Wilkison's wife Jane is 52 years old, which implies she was born about 1798.  Not only is this prior to the time we believe that Sarah and John Arter married, but John Arter would have been only 18 years old and unlikely to have been married at that time.  (In the 1860 census for Zerbe in Northumberland County lists Jane Wilkinson as 62.)  If Sarah was married twice, first husband's name might have been Reed.

A deed of sale in 1831 from John Adams to John Arter's son Jacob notes that that the property was purchased in 1828 by John Adams through a sheriff's sale. The property was sold to cover debts of John Arter, including $8 owed to John Adams.

John lived in Catawissa Township in 1810, but lated moved to Shamokin Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.  John probably died about 1850.  His wife Darah appears alone in the 1850 census, and the earliest civil record concerning his estate is August 4, 1851.  Sarah died after 1850.

The Children of John Arter

John Arter and Sarah Heller had at least three children. The children and their birthdates listed below are in agreement with all of the census records for John Arter

1. Mary Arter (August 04, 1804 - November 28, 1890), who was the second wife of John Pensyl.

2. Jacob Arter (May 21, 1809 - July 28, 1886), who married Jane Woodside; and

3. Rachel Arter (1811 - ?), who married Nicholas Willet.  The 1850 Census for Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, lists the family of Nicholas Willet, age 40, and wife Rachel, age 39. This suggests that Rachel was born about 1811 to John and Sarah and makes her the youngest known child of John.
