John Templin was born June 13, 1825, and died October 30, 1884. He married Hannah Arter, daughter of Philip Arter and Elizabeth Leiby. She was born February 20, 1819, and died May 20, 1905. Both are buried in the Shamokin Cemetery, Shamokin, Pennsylvania. The earliest record of John Templin is the 1850 Census for Coal Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. We have no information on him prior to this time other than his birthdate, which is recorded in the Shamokin Cemetery records. We do not know the identity of his parents, where he was born, where he grew up, or anywhere he might have lived before residing in Coal Township. Hannah Arter was most likely born in the home of her parents, Philip Arter and Elizabeth Leiby, in Shamokin Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. She grew up in Shamokin, and she probably met John Templin after he moved into the area from some other place. Based on the birthdate of their oldest known child, Susan, John Templin and Hannah Arter probably married in 1845 or early 1846. John apparently moved into the Shamokin area from some unknown location sometime after the 1840 census. We cannot be sure whether he moved there alone or with other family members. However, other Templins do appear in the area later, including his brother Orlando, so it is most likely that he moved there with other family members. The 1850 Census lists John's occupation as shoemaker. Sometime afterwards, the family moved West. In the 1860 Census, John Templin and his family were living next door to Hannah's brother John in Wheatland Township in Will County, Illinois. While they were living in Will County, their five youngest children died of disease within less than a week, in February 1865. In The Arter Story Blanche Arter gives the following account. "...according to a letter written by Emma Arter Baxter, John and Hannah Templin moved West to Plainfield, Illinois, and lived there for a time. While they were living there, they reportedly lost five children within one week of spotted fever."
There is other information that the cause of the deaths was smallpox and not spotted fever, which presumably comes from the cemetery records, but this has not been confirmed. In Illinois, the family lived with or near Hannah's brother John Arter. In October 1865, Susan, the oldest daughter of John and Hannah, married Jakob Huppert. Susan remained in the Midwest when the family, now numbering only three people, moved back East, probably in 1866. The family was definitely back in Pennsylvania by 1867, when daughter Harriet married William Henry Berger in Shamokin in December of that year. At the time of the 1880 census, John Templin, wife Hannah, and new son Harry F. were living in Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Next door to them were John and Hannah's daughter and son-in-law Harriet and William Henry Berger. John Templin died October 30, 1884; he is buried in Shamokin Cemetery, in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. Hannah lived for twenty years longer, before she died of "general debility" (old age) on May 20, 1905. It appears that she lived with her youngest child Frank during these years. In 1896, she lived at 317 E Dewart Street in Shamokin. On May 22, 1905, she was buried with her husband in Shamokin Cemetery. The children of John Templin and Hannah Arter are:
