Family Origin and Deepest Root

The oldest confirmed Templin ancestor of Regis is John Templin, born in Pennsylvania in 1825.  Our oldest record of John is the 1850 Census for Coal Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.  It is probable that John's parents were John and Anna Templin, who baptized Catherine Anna on 21 March 1830 at St. Peter's (Blue) Church in Ralpho Township. The elder John is identified as the tenant on property sold at sheriff sale in 1830 (he was not the owner), and he also appears in the 1830 census for Shamokin as John Dumplin

Immigrant Ancestors

We do not know the immigrant ancestor(s) for this family.  As discussed below, John Templin probably descends from the Templins who settled Chester County, Pennsylvania, and this family immigrated in the early eighteenth century.

Family History

John Templin is probably a descendant of the Templins who settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in the 1700's.  There are several Templins in the early Chester County records; and it has been stated that the progenitor of this group is Richard Templin.  Little is known about the children and descendants of James Templin, a son of Richard, and for this reason he is the most likely (but not the only) candidate to be the ancestor of John Templin.

John had at least one sibling, a brother named Orlando.  Orlando's son Jesse was living with John and his family at the time the 1850 Census was taken.  Orlando was born about 1815, which indicates that their father was probably born no later than 1795, and probably about 1790.  The John Dumplin/Templin in the 1830 census (see above) was born between 1780 and 1790.  There could be one more generation between the Chester County Templins and the father of John and Orlando.

Name Origin

Both the meaning and the origin of the name Templin are unknown.  John Templin and his family were apparently members of the German Reformed religion, as were the Templins of Chester County, Pennsylvania, so we can be pretty certain that the Templins came from Germany or a German-speaking region, such as Alsace or Switzerland.

There is a town named Templin in Germany, and the family might have come from there or be otherwise connected to that town.
