McCULLOCH BUILDING

One of the few buildings that has not been razed is the McCulloch Building, located on the southeast corner of Broad and Eaton.

Now Snyder's Variety Store, it was the first brick building built in Humeston and remains today in 2003.

The HOME STATE BANK organized in 1880 by Dr. McCulloch and J.D. Hasbrouck was originally located north of WoJo's Restaurant and South of the Humeston Corner Antique Mercantile. Hasbrouck served as president of the bank until his death in January 1905.

The small frame building was destroyed by fire in 1884. The new brick building was then erected by McCulloch in this location. (He also built a large building on the northwest corner which is currently under renovation.)

The first telephone exchange was established over the bank.

In September 1938 the new office room built on the rear of the building was completed and occupied by W.R. and Helen Richard in connection with the insurance agency they had.

In 1910 McCulloch had constructed a new concrete sidewalk, that was a novelty in this section. The CEMENT WAS BLACK IN COLOR.

Reva Snyder still owns this building and the one connected to it on the west. Hoyt and Reva Snyder purchased the Clothing Store in 1962 when the owner retired.

You can still see a vague outline painted in the west store "C.L. Hart, Clothing". This was probably painted on the building about 1933 when Robert Linton withdrew from Hart and Linton and took his cleaning and pressing equipment further west in the block.

Hart had been a part of the business with different partners since 1894. He left for a time to go out west for his wife's health. Upon his return in 1923 he purchased it again.

After Linton withdrew. Farris Hat Shop was located in the front part of the store.

Hart closed the business in 1936 after about 42 years in business.

Ralph King leased the building and put in a Variety Store; other owners were Higbee, Kinnear.

In 1962 Hoyt and Reva Snyder purchased the buildings. They had previously had a business on the north side east of Eaton next to the New Era *(Editor's note: My home now).

In their first business Snyder's established a radio and TV sales and service, watch repair and a small appliance business repair.

They soon added jewelry and gifts. They housed their jewelry in the old Home State Bank building on the east.

Today this little old fashioned store is a giant in its own right. From the beautiful ornate ceilings to the shelves stocked with housewares, toys, school supplies, hardware and camera supplies, the services of film development and Rug Doctor rental, there is the Frankoma pottery and clothing of all sizes. Even the fitting rooms are a delight, hosting oh.. such elegant mirrors!

Many visitors are pleasantly surprised at having so much under one roof and finding something without having to walk through aisle after aisle.

Hoyt died in 1998 at the age of 79 and Reva continues to run the business, providing Humeston with a great store.
