Ye Olde Popcorn Stand, Humeston Ia

..........Ye Olde Popcorn Stand..........

The popcorn stand which was located between Surbaugh's Food Store and the Gambles store was run by the Christian Church ladies. This was probably during the late 40s. Two local girls can remember their moms working in the stand and they took sacks of popcorn around to cars and businesses on Saturday night to sell during the band concert.
I think it was moved to the park when the skating rink was open in the early 1950s. The Municipal Free Skating Rink was opened with the Legion furnishing music and the Christian Church providing supervision in exchange for the concession stand. The skating rink was one of the projects of the Humeston Commercial Club. The cement slab was built and then the railing went up. That's all there was to it. We had to change the wheels on our skates quite often because of the cement. Today the cement is there, but it is a basketball court.

Dear Visitor, If you lived or visited here
during this time, can you help me out here?

Was there more than one stand? Or was the stand moved there? Who built it? Do you have an old photo with even a part of the stand in it? Or a photo of the skating rink? I'm not asking for precious family photos, just a scan? Have a tiny memory or a long story you might like to share? Any tidbit of information would be very much appreciated! Thanks for "listening"!

I was one of the skaters learning to skate there and Jeanne and George Harris took some of us to Des Moines to the "big fancy skating rink" and showed us many dancing skate steps. Those were the days....
