The Humeston Advocate

THE HUMESTON ADVOCATE
From the Souvenir Edition,
1906

At the time this was written,
by former editor PITMAN and O.N. LEACH, current editor,
the town boasted 1100 happy, contented people.

"The town must have been designed by the creator for the site of a thriving city, with her wide, well kept streets crossing one another at right angles and the many blocks of brick and cement sidewalks giving the city a most pleasing appearance to the eye."
"Humeston's rich men are among her hardest workers. We have few retired men. Our men of capital are busy using their capital and their brains.
Such a condition is the salvation of the town and of themselves ---*** SO LONG AS THE ENGINE RUNS, SO LONG THE BEARINGS WILL NOT RUST, for when it is shut down, then comes decay."***
The newspaper showed pictures of the City Park, scenes of the city, residences of Paul YOUNG and G.W. MCKINLEY; First Congregational Church, MCCULLOCH block building, Dr. Culmsee's dental office, reception room, operating room, laboratory and apparatuses for extracting teeth "WITHOUT PAIN", Methodist Church, scenes of Broad St. and a full page of pictures of the Mayor and City Council.
They wrote about the businesses of the city also.

*** Editors Note:
The writers showed accurate forsight when making this statement. For sadly, after the railroad left, Humeston could no longer be classified as a thriving city.
