The earliest "known for sure" ancestor is Culver P. Brannen.  Culver was probably born in 1810, in New Brunswick, Canada.  Although I am looking for proof, it is likely he was the son of Thomas Brannen, a loyalist, and Sarah Culver, daughter of loyalist Jonas Culver.

After marrying  Mary Ann Deering in Houlton Maine, in 1828, Culver started his family.  Sometime between 1850 and 1860, Culver headed to California to seek his fortune in the gold fields.

We don't know exactly what happened to Culver.  Evidence suggests, however, that he died sometime during the journey by ship to California, and was buried at sea.

Mary Ann Deering remarried, this time her neighbor and sister's widow, William Butterfield.

Among Culver's children was Weston Brannen, presumably named after the town the family lived in.  Weston along with Stephen and William three brothers, served in the civil war.  When William was killed at the battle of Drury's Bluff, Weston returned home and married his widow, Margaret Brackett.  Weston and some family members are pictured on Page 1 of this site.

My grandmother, Mabel Elizabeth Robbins, was born in 1913.  As a child, her

parents Charles and Mildred encouraged her musical

talent.  From a very young age, Mabel, who played the cello, performed for audiences in the Boston area.

Mabel and Weston Brannen, II, met while performing with an orchestra.  They married in the early 1940's, and raised four sons.  Her boys and their children were the apples of Mabel's eye.

Throughout her life, Mabel was active in symphonies and orchestras, and taught dozens of students to play the cello.

After Weston's death in 1978, she devoted herself to helping a teenaged grandchild who needed her special brand of understanding and love.

Mabel continued to play the cello with orchestras until just weeks before her death in 1994.
