Welcome to the story of some of my Bittmann / Pittman / Pitman kinfolk who initially settled in the Shenandoah River Valley of Virginia and later emigrated to the Ohio River Valley of southern Indiana.
Nicholas, Anthony and Philip Pittman were grandsons of Friedrich & Anna Catherina Bittmann (Bly, 1993). They immigrated to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia from their home in Framersheim, Germany (Bly, 1993) and settled in what was originally known as Frederick County and later known as Shenandoah County.
The primary families of interest in Harrison County, Indiana are those of my 4th great-grandfather, John Pittman Sr, and his sister Catherine Pittman Snider (wife of John Snider). Both families settled in western Harrison County, Indiana in the early 1800's. John and Catherine Pittman were children of Nicholas Pittman (aka Bittmann).
Nicholas' brothers Anthony (Antonius) and Philip (Johannes Phillip) also settled in Virginia. Some of their children also moved on to the western frontier of Indiana in the early 1800's.
Other Harrison County surnames that appear within the Pittman genealogy include Mauck, Fleshman, Lopp, Hardsaw, Trotter, Conrad, Smoots, and Hottel. As you browse through this collection of information about the Pittman's of Harrison County, please let me know if you find errors in the information or if you have additional information to contribute to this family history.
