My mother is Fannie Beatrice Luna Cooke, daughter of William Richard and Minnie Acuff Luna. Minnie was born and raised in Van Buren Co. TN. Her parents were James Polk and Emma Frances "Fannie" Hale Acuff. James Polk Acuff was the oldest son of Wm. Leon and Sarah McElroy Acuff.

If you have been feeling the earth shaking down in the Southern USA it's probably from me doing my "Happy Dance". My research of my Acuff line had been at a stand still at my gg grandfather Wm. Leon Acuff since 1990. Sometime in early 2003, Billie McNamara brought to my attention a case involving Jonathan Acuff for which a W. L. Acuff of Van Buren Co. TN had been called testify. Our hopes were dashed in that search when a copy of Wm's deposition wasn't in the case folder at Bledsoe Co. TN(where the case was heard). Since John Acuff lost the case and appealed to the State Supreme Court there was hope that a copy of the original case would be with the state records. Billie found that the TN Supreme Court Original case files(after they are closed) are sent to the Manuscripts Division of the TN State Library and Archives in Nashville and are available to anyone visiting the Archives.

Tuesday Feb. 10, 2004, I watched some television while eating supper and then checked email. Among my emails were two emails from Billie asking if I was online and telling me to call as soon as I got the message. As you might guess....my heart was racing. Billie read me the statement made in Wm's Acuff's deposition that made my day(actually better than that but words can't describe).

"What relation are you to Jonathan Acuff the plaintiff in this cause."

W. L Acuff answers, "I am his son"

"How long have you been moved away from this country(sic)"

W. L. Acuff answers, "Six years, I think"

Since this case was in the spring of 1877 it puts Wm. L. Acuff moving away from Bledsoe Co. TN in 1871 which is the year that he married Sarah McElroy. They lived near Sarah's Father in the 1st District of Van Buren Co. TN. To further the proof, a statement at the end of his deposition states "he has been in attendance for one day as a witness and lives in Vanburen County and 28 miles from Pikeville."

The majority of these census transcriptions were done by me in 1991 from the microfilm at Wallace State College in Hanceville AL. I've put them online so that perhaps other Acuff researchers will get some use from them. Deciphering the handwriting from microfilmed census records can be a difficult task. I am human and I do make mistakes. The information is correct to the best of my knowledge but as with any information you should always double check it for yourself. Also these are only the Acuff Families that I collected and do not necessarily include EVERY Acuff family for any given census although that is what I have tried to do. I have tried to add addition Acuff Transcriptions as I find the time. Acuff/Ecoff researchers might find it interesting to see what locations the Acuff/Ecoff families were in during the earlier census records.--MB
