My Grandmother, Minnie Acuff Luna
Minnie Acuff Luna
1899-1957
Minnie Acuff was my maternal Grandmother. She was second in line in order of birth of the six children of James K. Polk Acuff and Emma Frances Fannie Hale. She was only 15 yrs old when she married my grandfather William Richard Luna(1892-1994) in Van Buren Co. TN on July 18, 1915. My Grandmother died in July of 1957 at the age of 57. Although I never got to meet her, Ive put together some accounts from others who did.

1945-Bone Cave Tennessee
The house where my grandparents were living was on C. P. Moores land in Bone Cave TN(Van Buren
County). It had a wooden fence around the front yard and a wire fence around the rest of the yard to
keep the livestock out of the yard. On a Sunday in the early summer of 1945 my grandmother was out
in the front yard watching my mother (who was five at the time this occurred) and her younger brother
play. Moms older brother, Ernest and a friend of his were sitting on a tree, which had fallen over the
fence and my Grandfather was in the house answering some letters and working on a Bible
correspondence course he was taking. My Mom and her brother were running around and playing
near their mother when they heard her scream Some one shot me! Ernest and his friend heard her
so his friend ran up to his house and brought back his mother and sister, who was a nurse. They
brought a cot out of the house for grandma to rest on while my Grandfather went to the landlords
house and got help. They took Grandma in the car to the doctors office in McMinnville, Tennessee
(Warren County ). The bullet had had missed the bone and arteries and had come up on the other side
of her leg. Someone was truly looking out for my Grandma and her children.
1948-Taft Tennessee
In the early spring of 1948, my grandparents lived on Mr. James Malones farm in Taft Tennessee,
which is located near the Tennessee and Alabama state line. My grandmother had a hen that had
some young chicks, which were just barely able to follow the mother hen around. A storm started to
stir and my grandmother wanting to see that they were protected went out the back door of the house
to get a tub that she could put over them to keep them from drowning. As soon as she got out the
back door and was about to get the tub she was hit by lightning. My mother, who was eight yrs old at
the time this happened remembers hearing her Mom screaming and running back in the house. She
told them the lightning struck her and turned her in her tracks until she was facing the opposite
direction from what she was originally facing. No one remembers what happened to the chickens and
the hen.
Grandma's Name
A story which often crosses my mind and makes me chuckle covers the time period when my mother was in grade school. I'm not sure when it was but the teachers were needing some information to complete filling out forms and had asked my Mother her Mom's name. My mother told them that she didn't know her Mother's name. The teacher, feeling she could get the answer by asking a simple question in a round about way asked my mother this question--"What does your Dad call your Mother?"
My Mom answered, "Old Hen." I believe the teacher gave up at this point and went to one of the other classes where my Mom's older sisters were to
get the needed information.
