-  Transcription, Col. 2:  A number of relatives met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. August Haas, 1927 East Seventeenth Street Sunday [5 July], for observance of three birthdays.  Those being honored were Mrs. August Haas and Mrs. Taylor West, both of Muncie, and Mrs. Frank Haas, of Hillsdale, Mich.  A potluck dinner was served to Mrs. Frank Haas and children, Martha, Orville and Billy, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Haas and sons, Beryle and Donald, all of Hillsdale, Mich., Mr. and Mrs John Haas and children, Lois and John, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Walter Haas, Mr. and Mrs. August Haas and daughters, Wilma  Norma, Aline, [Olive], Marjorie and Barbara.  Mrs. Corma Johnson and children, Ronald and Dorothy and Mr. and Mrs. Taylor West and sons, Jackie and Max Ray.

AUGUST HAAS DEAD; LINGERING ILLNESS
July 17, 1943 [cursive]
August Haas, 48, died at his home, 1927 East Seventeenth Street, at 3 o'clock yesterday morning, following a lingering illness. Mr. Haas was employed at Ball Brothers Company as a foreman, and was a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church. He was also a veteran of World War I.
Surviving are the widow, Mabel; five daughters, Mrs. Walter Robbins, Miss Marjorie Haas and Miss Barbara Haas , all at home, Mrs. John Lucas and Mrs. James Fields, Jr., of Muncie; a brother, Valentine Haas, of Stryker, O., and a grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Meeks mortuary, the Rev. E. L. Hamilton in charge. Friends may call at the mortuary after noon today.

GIRLS HURT IN AUTO CRASH 'DOING WELL'
  "They are doing fairly well," was the report last night from St. John's Hospital at Anderson on the condition of Miss Wilma Haas, 16 [18], daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Haas, 1927 East seventeenth Street, and of Miss Sarah Sackett, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sackett, 2813 South Monroe Street, who were injured in an auto collision early Friday at Anderson.  
   David McGilliard, 17, driver of the auto in which the two girls were riding, was removed to the home of his mother, Mrs. Pauline McGiliard,, 123 North Ohio Avenue, Friday.  The accident occurred several hours after the trio received diplomas from Central High School in the commencement exercises st the fieldhouse.  Their auto collided with a taxi driven by Roy Sanders, Middletown.

Two Girls in Anderson Hospital Seriously Injured
   From St. John's Hospital at Anderson last night came the report that one of the three members of the 1936 Central High School graduating class who were injured there yesterday morning in an auto accident had been dismissed and tht conditions of the other two were "fairly good" and "good".
   David McGilliard, 17, who suffered fractures of two left ribs, was dismissed and returned to the home of his mother, Mrs. Pauline McGilliard, 123 North Ohio avenue.  He was the driver of the auto in which the other two students were riding.
   Miss Wilma Haas, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Haas, 1927 East Seventeenth street, who sustained a dislocated vertebra and injuries at the base of the skull, was reported to be in "fairly good" condition.
          Taxi Driver Being Held.
   The most severely injured of the trio, Miss Sarah Sackett, 17, who suffered a concussion of the brain and lacerations about the body, was reposted [reported] to be in "fair" condition.  She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sackett, 2813 South Monroe street.
   Central avenue and Thirteenth street, Anderson, was the scene of the wreck, when the auto driven by McGilliard collided with a taxi driven by Roy Sanders of Middletown.  Sanders is being held by Anderson police pending investigation.
   The crash happened only several hours after the three graduates received their diplomas at commencement exercises held at the field house   They went to the annual T. M. C. Club commencement dance following the exercises and left early for an auto ride.  The car is owned by Guy Ogle, a roomer at the McGilliard home.  It was badly wrecked.

   Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the Burk and Fennig chapel for Will Alfred Worthen, 74, retired painter and paper hanger, who died Tuesday afternoon, at his home here following an extended illness.  The immediate cause of death was pneumonia.  Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery Here.  Surviving other than the widow, are three children by a previous marriage; Mrs. August Haas and William Worthen, both of Muncie, and Mrs. Harold Atha of this city.  [This obituary was copied from the Hartford City Newspaper where Will resided]

Warner Gear Band.

   The Warner Gear Band, the latest musical organization in Muncie, starts off with the promise of becoming one of the best concert bands in the city.  Among its members are band men who have had lots of experience.  The organization first attracted attention at the Y.M.C.A. by playing at the Factory Basketball League games.  It made its first public appearance by heading the parade at the district Red Men's meeting and later took an active part in the Y.W.C.A. campaign.   
   Gus Doerman is leader and Clifford Babb is the business manager.  The handsome uniforms were furnished by the Warner Gear Company.
   The members of the band, reading from left to right, are as follows:  Back row, Jess Chambers, tuba; Martin Carey, baritone; Lawrence Butler, tuba.  Middle row, Irvin Heeter, bass drum; Arthur Hillard, trombone; Earl Longnecker, trombone; Thurman Hensley, alto; Clifford Babb, snare drum.  First row, Raymond Hoyt, cornet; Charles Hollopeter, cornet; Frank Tilton, cornet; Clifford St. John, cornet; Gus Doerman, clarinet and director; Claude Moore, clarinet; August Haas, clarinet; William Neighbors, clarinet; Norwood Carey, mascot (seated on floor), and John Rinard, trombone.

Factory Foremen Dies:  Ill Long Time
   John Haas, 57, of 2313 Mock Avenue, a Ball Brothers Company foreman who had been in the employ of the company twenty-six years, died at 6 o'clock last evening at his home after a long illness.  He was president of the mutual Aide Society at Ball Brothers Company, and a member of the Moose, Red Men's and Haymakers' lodges.
   Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Nora May Haas; three sons, Walter, Fred and John, Jr. Haas; three daughters, Mrs. Corma Strong and Mrs. Bessie West of Muncie and Miss Lois Haas at home; two brothers, Valentine Haas of Striker, O., and August Haas of Muncie, and four grandchildren.
   The body was taken to the Meeks mortuary.  Arrangements for he funeral have not been completed.

   A pleasant time was enjoyed, Sunday, at the home of Bernadette McKenzie, east of the city, when she entertained the members of the I.U.B. PARENTS AND TEACHERS IMPROVE SCHOOL SPIRIT
   "Co-operation of teachers and parents in such an organization as a parent-teacher association makes possible the carrying out of many effective measures in education." said D. W. Horton, superintendent of city schools, speaking last night at a meeting of parents at the Stevenson school.
   Superintendent Horton cited health an welfare programs for the benefit of children as especially effective when backed by the combined support of teachers and parents, and also praised parent-teacher associations as means of bettering school and community spirit.
   Pupils of the Stevenson school, of which J.S. Shepard, is principal, presented a program of entertainment at the meeting.  Officers of the parent-teacher organization at the school are Mrs. August Haas, president; Mrs. Ruth Bell, vice president. and Miss Ruth Jones, secretary-treasurer.
