S11 Post to Yahoo! Answers, Carpenter Hardware, Cammack, Indiana - Link,

I found this obituary (which mentions a great-granddaughter named Capri Carpenter) at http://www.ancestry.com/search/obit/view...

Here's the text from the obituary itself:
The Star Press Muncie, IN - January 16, 2007
Herman M. Carpenter, 97

CAMMACK - Mr. Herman M. Carpenter "Carpy", 97 of Cammack, IN. passed away Monday, January 15, 2007 at Woodlands Nursing home.

Carpy was born in Muncie on November 7, 1909. Son of Morton and Laura Carpenter he graduated from Harrison Twp. High School in 1927. Carpy attended Normal College now known as Ball State University.

Most people remember Carpy from his role in servicing his patrons of Carpenter Hardware in Cammack. From its humble beginnings in 1936 the store was born of necessity while Carpy still ran the family farm. It expanded into a plumbing and heating service and supply store prior to developing into a full service hardware store. Anyone that had the pleasure of experiencing a visit to Carpenter Hardware found themselves in a simpler time in a museum-like setting. Approximately 8000 sq. ft. with 16ft walls filled to the ceiling with metal gas cans, manual washboards, and garden supplies all navigated by 2 to 3 foot wide aisles as depicted in various Muncie-Star Press articles. You may have also overheard someone else's experience of Carpy explaining the finer points of using the right tool for the job. He was always there to help and assist in the repair process. Unlike many of the superstores today, Carpy was also available after hours to open the store for urgent purchases. Carpenter Hardware carved a niche in the market and became legendary for carrying the hard to find items that the larger chains did not carry. Up to the age 92 he worked 6 days a week and saved Sunday's for finishing up the paperwork.

Surviving are his two sons Rex Carpenter (wife, Marilyn) Yorktown, Bruce Carpenter, San Diego, CA: two daughters, Carol Judkins, Clarinda, Iowa, and Judy Carpenter, Columbus, OH: eight grandchildren including Stacey Hickman (husband, Chris), Holly Brandon (husband, Sean), Joseph Carpenter (wife, Emilie), Steven Carpenter (wife, Karen), Christina Judkins, Jeff Judkins, Stan Darling, and Stephen Darling; eight great-grandchildren, Jared and Jacob Hickman, Noah, Grace and Joel Brandon, Josephina Carpenter, Conner and Capri Carpenter; and several nieces and nephews.

Carpy was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Berniece; his son, Allen; 3 brothers; and 2 sisters.

At Carpy's request, no calling hours or services will be held.

The family requests memorials to made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Whetsel Funeral Service, Alexandria.

Hope that helps!
