   "On January 10, 1827 Campbell Dale purchased on half of section 12 from the U.S. Government, including the northeast quarter (three fourths of which is now within the corporate limits of Daleville) The east half of the southeast quarter and the east half of the northwest quarter.
   This act established the present site for Daleville and about this same time an attempt was made to establish a village or a port of trade by damming White River and feeding a canal.
   The Anderson Hydraulic Company undertook the building of this canal which followed White River and was to furnish transportation for intake and outlet of tradeable goods. The name for the prospective town was Summits Port and is said to have been located on the river near the Roy Schlegel, Henry Bronnenberg or John Bronnenberg farms.
   Few buildings went up however, for when the water was turned in, it was all lost before it reached Anderson and the canal venture was lost. Many of us have had lots of fun picnicking and fishing on the banks of Whte River, and our sons have learned to swim 'down at the ole dam.' "
