"A substantial iron bridge spans the [White] river at this point,on the pike [Burlington Pike] leading to Burlington...The name was given to a small collection of houses which stood here long before the town was surveyed and laid out into town lots by the original proprietors David Stout and William Duncan." Fire, 15 Aug 1904
"M. E. Church at Smithfield is burned, and because of the numerous oil derricks and tanks the venerable village is threatened with annihilation. Within a year Smithfield has been transformed from a 'Hoosier Sleepy Hollow' into a boom town; an oil derrick was erected on the very ground occupied by the church." [S2, p 201, 202]
