9 Feb 1876 Oscar was born on Wednesday 9 February 1876 in Hamilton County, Indiana. He was the second of four children, and the second of three sons, of  Isaac and Keziah Tomlinson Robbins.  His middle name, Clifton, has been carried down through four generations - through his second son, Walter, grandson and great grandson

Grace, the first child of George and Mary Francis Underwood Foulke, was born on Tuesday 3 February 1880 in Jackson Township, Hamilton County, Indiana.  Grace was the oldest of what would be five children. The family would eventually consist of four girls and one boy, Arthur, the youngest.  Also living in the household was Jesse Alvin Foulke, the son of George and Narcissa Wilson Foulke.  Jesse had been born in November 1876

23 July 1900 William Robbins Dies (Brother of Oscar)
Oscar told the story of his brother William’s death in a binder accident in July 1900. While working on the binder the horses bolted throwing him into the path of the machine. He was seriously injured and died as his brother and others were taking him home. Oscar felt partially responsible because he had been attending to other horses and was not in the vicinity to help his younger brother. S16,

According to her second son she attended college and studied to become a teacher. S25, Confirmation of her attendance at DePauw University was obtained in February 2008. Grace entered Asbury College of Liberal Arts in 1901. She is also listed in the DePauw Yearbook of 1901-1902 and shown to have completed 4 courses by May 1902. 1904 Grace attended the St. Louis World's Fair -
Her son stated that she attended the World’s fair in St Louis in 1904 while in college. A souvenir of the World’s fair was in her possession and is now in the RobbHaas collections.  S25, N2, I31,
 
12 Nov 1908 Grace's sister Carrie committed suicide. The obituary indicated that bad health was the cause. According to another source, however, Carrie had wanted to marry a man who was a trash collector and her parents thought that was beneath her and would not allow it.   S25,

Bef 1910 Oscar played the violin, and his brother Christopher played the guitar at dances on Saturday nights in Westfield before he was married. He told this story to his second oldest son but would never play for the children. Oscar's First Car:  According to Ina [ID0197] Grandpa got his first car in 1910 because he wanted to go faster than the horses could take him. Grandma preferred to stick with the horses but Grandpa overruled. Ina didn't know what kind it was or what it looked like since she was very young at the time and this was a story she heard from her father. [Ina wasn't born until 1913]  S14,

Grace's parents (her mother) had been against this marriage because they felt he was beneath her. Grace went ahead with the marriage but it was not a happy union, she suffered from a great deal of depression according to son Walter.  This was a double wedding because Grace's sister Sarah and Robert E. Ross were married as well.

Oscar and Grace began their married life on 14 September 1910 in Hamilton County, Indiana. Their wedding was a double wedding with Grace's sister Sarah and Robert E. Ross getting married on the same day. Although no records have been found to support it I would venture a guess and say that the marriages probably took place in the home of the George Foulke Farm on present day 236th street about 5 miles west of Cicero. The union of Oscar and Grace lasted until Feb 1959 at the death of Oscar and Sarah was widowed in Aug 1964.

This farm was about 80 acres in size. They had 15 or 20 head of milk cows, horses and Poland China hogs. Grace had 500 chickens and traded the eggs for groceries – they sold the cream from the milk and fed the milk to the hogs.

abt March 1921 Cadiz Farm House Burned - The fire started in the smoke house, probably from a ham falling into the fire. Some men from Cadiz came out but were not successful in putting out the fire and the house was a total loss.
  Residence:  Scott Farm - Following the fire the family moved to a farm owned by Mrs. Scott. They lived at this farm for a time and then moved to the Shirley Farm.  The family probably rented this farm, but they did run it for Mrs. Scott.
  Residence:  Shirley Farm - The family rented this farm from a banker.  The owner supplied the money for supplies and they built a silo while living there.
  Residence:  Cadiz Farm -  
-- The family evidently moved back to the Cadiz farm once Oscar was finished building the new house. The kids all went to Cadiz School and the oldest child, Myron, graduated from Cadiz in 1930.
--  The new house consisted of an old house that Oscar bought, cut in half, moved to the Cadiz farm location and put back together. He finished it and added porches.
-- The family lost this farm because they could not make the payments during the depression.

-- This move took place in late 1929 or early 1930 because son Myron lived with a friend’s family so he could finish school and graduate from Cadiz in Henry County.
-- This was the farm of Grace’s mother where she had lived as a child.
-- Oscar, and Grace’s brother Arthur, were attempting to save the farm from foreclosure. Mary Francis was in debt because she had signed notes to Robert Ross, her son-in-law while he and his wife had been living on the farm.
-- This was a farm consisting of about 100 acres.
-- Oscar and Arthur were not successful in saving the farm and after the death of Arthur from suicide in June 1934, the Robbins family moved once again.

-- The family rented this farm and it consisted of about 200 acres and was approximately six miles east of Arcadia. It had a large house and was in White River Township

  Oscar raised hogs and chickens. He prided himself in raising prize-winning Poland China hogs and White Rock chickens that won numerous blue ribbons at the Indiana State Fair. These ribbons were kept in the family Bible. S14, I5,

Abt 1937 Residence:  Fairview Farm  - Green Township, Randolph County, Indiana
--This farm was in Green Township and was located on what is now County Road 100N, .67 miles east of County Road 1150W.
-- The farm was about 105 acres
-- This is the first farm the family bought after losing the Cadiz farm in 1930.
-- The family moved to this farm in about 1937 or 1938 and sold it in about 1943.
-- Once Walter left for World War II Oscar was not able to do the farming by himself so he he traded it for a smaller farm in Delaware County that he ended up owning free and clear after the trade.

-- This was a 40 acre farm that had a small house, a barn and some other outbuildings.

-- This farm was about 140 acres with land in both Delaware and Blackford Counties.
-- The farm was located on what is now Delaware County Road 1270N, and about 1 mile northwest of the Cole farm.
-- The family moved to this farm about 1947.
-- Walter had purchased an adjoining farm and was once again helping Oscar run his farm.
-- This farm had a small 2-story house, a large barn with silo and several outbuildings. It also had a large wood with a winding stream.
-- On the Blackford county side of the farm was a windmill and rolling hills that were not tillable and was used for pasture.
-- Oscar lived here until his death in February 1959.
-- Grace sold and moved from the farm to a house in Eaton, Delaware County, Indiana

Oscar passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday 8 February 1959. He had been ill for quite some time and was recently hospitalized but had been released and gone home

Aft 1959 Residence - Grace:  Following the death of Oscar, Grace moved into a small yellow ranch style house in Eaton, Delaware County, Indiana. This was a lovely home and she made many friends at church and through her membership in the Eaton War Mother’s club. This home was located at 301 Jefferson street, on the south side.

  Oscar Occupations - :
Woodcutter: His family had been farmers but they also were wood cutters. They would cut trees, Cut up the logs and split it into firewood which they would sell for income.  "His family was poor - they cut wood and sold it to make money"  S16,

Bridge Builder: In his youth Oscar also worked for a man that built bridges. He was a large man and very strong so he was able to carry the large timbers used in the construction of the bridges. He also manned
the large wheelbarrows of concrete used in the building process. Oscar was later described as “Tall and Stout, with grey eyes and Brown hair”.  S5, S16,

  Oscar Occupation - Farmer:  S5, S7, S9, S10, S11,

Foremost, Oscar was a farmer. He rented and farmed numerous farms during his lifetime. He was a hard worker and farming in his day was a labor-intensive pursuit. He would work from before daylight until dark on most days. He did not, however, work on Sundays as was the custom at the time

Ina said that Grandpa [ID0014] raised Poland China hogs and White Rock chickens that he took to the Indiana State Fair and won several ribbons for them - This was also confirmed by Walter. He kept these ribbons in the family Bible. Ina didn't know what ever happened to the Bible and neither did dad [ID0005]. He won mostly blue ribbons but also had some red ones as well. There is a picture showing Ina and Grandpa in the barn lot with some of the hogs.  S14, I5,

Pony/ western horses: Grandpa got some "western" horses according to Ina and Walter. They were mainly used for pulling farm machinery and other work around the farm. They were a feisty lot, but one in particular was very mean and was not able to be used as a work horse. It would rear up in its stall and try to smash Grandpa if he went into its stall to attempt to saddle it. They also had a pony for the kids to ride. Mary  would try to ride it and it would lay down and not go anywhere. Mary would stand there and cry. Walter said he rode it probably the most. Ina rode it quite a bit as well. Myron did not ride the pony much, preferring another horse. The pony had been loaned to them and the owner took it back after a year to raffle it off.  S15, I6,

Farming in his time was a dangerous undertaking. He told of being gored in the leg by a boar hog leaving a large gash in his upper leg. It bled a great deal but he merely bandaged the wound instead of having it attended to by a doctor. S16,

 
  Oscar, Religion:  According to Walter Oscar never attended church - S16,
  Grace Avocations:

Piano: Grace was a piano player and her piano was moved from farm to farm as the family moved. Oscar complained that the piano, an upright unit, was so heavy and hard to handle – he got tired of moving it. S25,
    -- I can remember as a child that Oscar got tired of the grandkids pounding on the piano and nailed the keyboard cover shut. That seemed cruel at the time but in retrospect I can now see the value in the action.
    -- According to daughter Ina, Grace continued to play the piano and she taught Ina to play as well. S32,

Church: Grace was quite a "church goer" according to Walter. She would go every chance she got but her attendance slacked off after she was married - Oscar did not attend church.  S25, N3, After Moving to Mechanicsburg she attended the Middletown Methodist Church  S29,

Club: She was a member of the Eaton War Mother’s group. There is a plaque to the right side of her headstone showing her membership.  S29, I11,

  Grace Education:

She did some substitute teaching, according to Walter, but did nothing further in that line after getting married in 1910.  S25, N2,

  Grace Life Experience:  According to Walter, a great deal of Grace's life was unhappy and she experienced depression.   S25,
  Grace Occupations:
Farm wife: She was involved with the care of the six children and the house as well as being in charge of all the meals.

It was reported that she also raised as many as 500 chickens. This supplied the family with meat - The eggs that were produced were taken to town and traded for groceries. The family ate duck eggs because they didn’t sell.   S25,

Cooking was done with a wood cook stove. The fire box for the wood was small so the firewood had to be specially split and cut to fit the stove. It took a lot of wood to keep the fire hot for the burners and the oven. This chore kept the men busy supplying wood for the meals besides that needed for the heating stoves.   S25,

I can remember the wood cook stove being in the kitchen of the farmhouse of the County Road 1270N farm. Grandma would always fix a big breakfast that included biscuits and gravy. She would turn the crank on her flour sifter in the Hoosier Cabinet and soon the wonderful smell of breakfast would be going throughout the house

RobbHaas:  Oh, I thought you said Grandma was really a church goer  Living ID0005:  She was before she got married - after she got married well dad didn't go to church so she didn't do much of it either then

My Grandfather, Oscar Clifton Robbins was born on the 9th of February 1876 in Hamilton County, Indiana near the small town of Westfield.  He was the son of farmers and was one of four children, 3 sons and one daughter.  Probably in the 1890's or so he and his older brother Christopher Columbus played at barn dances in Westfield.  Oscar played his violin and Christopher his guitar.  
I can remember as a youth being at my grandparents home on the weekends.  Aunt Esther would come home and stay at the farm on the weekends and I really enjoyed visiting with her.  Her bedroom was upstairs and there was also an attic type space off that room.  I can remember her getting this case out of the attic and showing the violin to me.  I well imagine that she told me about the guitar and what the significance was to Grandpa, but I cannot really remember anything beyond seeing it.
Later in life I conducted several interviews with my father about his life experiences.  During one of these talks he spoke about Grandpa and Christopher playing in Westfield.
I asked if Grandpa had played for the family and Dad said that he had never heard his dad play the violin.  He had only heard the stories from his dad and a little from his uncle Christopher.  There was a piano in the home but music did not seem to be an important part of the family life according to my father.  Dad did not know how Grandpa learned to play or if he played at other events besides the dances.  My father ventured the opinion that Grandpa probably didn't have time to play after his marriage in 1910 because he was too busy working and providing for his growing family.  
After my Grandfather passed away in Feb 1959, the violin and the guitar found their way into the possession of Oscar's son, Myron Foulke Robbins, Sr., and he kept them on display at his home for many years.  After his passing both instruments were passed down to Myron's daughter where they remain to this day.

It really doesn't give us any more information, except that she was enrolled in the Asbury College of Liberal Arts (DePauw was previously named Asbury), that she was from Noblesville, IN and that she had completed 4 courses of study by May 1, 1902. She is not listed in the following three yearbooks.

Note:  [Feb 2008] When I told Dad that I had found records that his mother had attended DePauw he admitted that he was probably mistaken and that she had GONE to St Louis WHILE she was in college and not that she had actually attended college in St Louis.

Monday Morning.
We got one letter from Junior while he was in the hospital, in March, but haven't heard from him since. I answered him and Esther has written to him three times with out an answer. Hope he got better and able to go back to whatever he was doing. Expect he has found out he has gotten into something pretty serious.
Your Grand father has been pretty sick but is lots biter to day. The Dr. was here yesterday and isn't coming back unless we send for him. He still has Asthma and sinus trouble, has been having rheumatism in one leg for sometime, then last week he had a blood clot in the other leg. That is gone now and he feels better every day so we are feeling much encouraged this morning.

NOTICE OF HEARING ON FINAL ACCOUNT AND PETITION FOR DISTRIBUTION
No. P 2S 64/62
     Clerk of the Superior Court of Delaware County No. 2, Muncie, Indiana.
     In the Matter of the Estate of Grace Robbins, deceased.
     Notice is hereby given to all interested persons that Walter C. Robbins as Administrator of the above named estate has filed his final account in settlement of said estate and petition for distribution, and that the same has been set for hearing in said Superior Court of Delaware County No. 2  at the Court House in the City of Muncie, Indiana, on the 22nd day of March, 1965, at which time all persons entitled to share in the final distribution of said estate are required to appear in said Court and make proof of their heirship or claim to any part of said estate and show cause why such account should not be approved.
     Dated this 4th day of March 1965.
