John Snyder

The subject of this article was born in Chambersburg, Pa. on August 29, 1822, the son of
Joseph and Mary Snyder. He died January 29, 1898, and was consequently 75 years of age.

On March 28, 1848, he was united in marriage to Nancy Jane Smith at Marian, Grant county,
Indiana and in the fall of 1865 moved to Nebraska, settling first at Peru, Nemaha county,
where he resided seven years, moving to this county in 1872. He was a resident of this county
for 26 years. Ten children have been born to the union, of whom the following still survive:
James W., of Palisade, Nebr., Joseph, of Alma, Nebr., Mrs. Mary Horn, of Republican City,
Mrs. Eliza Horn, of Talmage, Nebr.; George, of Gering, Neb.; Mrs. Clara Jameson, of Fairbury,
Neb.; Miss Belle Snyder and Mrs. Minnie Starkey, of Ragan. He was a devout Christian, a
member of the Baptist Church. The funeral occurred on Monday January 31, at the M.E.
church in this city. The services were conducted by Rev. Skiles of Huntley and Rev. Hills of
Alma when the remains were laid to rest in Cedar Grove cemetery. He was a kind and
affectionate husband and father, and enjoyed a large acquaintance in the county. A loving
hand has penned the following lines:
With tearful eyes we look around,
Life seems so dark and lonely to us all,
Yet, mid our grief we hear father say,
"Children, weep not for me."

He tells us of a place of rest,
He tells us where our souls may be at rest,
And gently whispers
"Children, weep not for me."

Oh, Father from above, still support
And keep us in the paths of right,
That we too can say
"Children, weep not for me."
