RHODES-REASONS Family
of Wayne Co., N.C.
I descend from George Reasons, born about 1790 in NC (not sure if Wayne County), and died in August 1842 in Gibson County, TN (ironically, he drowned in the Middle Fork Forked Deer River while at a picnic celebrating the marriage of his son John Rhodes Reasons to mary (Polly) Sollis. George Reasons married Dicey Rhodes on 23 March 1817 in Wayne County, NC. Dicey was the daughter of William Rhodes (brother of Gen. James Rhodes) and Edna Flowers (daughter of John Flowers and Clarissa Harrell). She was not the daughter of John Rhodes Jr and Frances (?), as your GenWeb Wayne County, NC marriage posting claims. Dicey Rhodes was born 27 march 1799 in Wayne County, NC and died 31 January 1874 in Gadsden, Crockett County, TN. George Reasons served in the War of 1812 in Capt. John Flowers Jr's Company of NC Militia, and was at Beacon Island.
I can find no mention of the marriage of William Rhodes and Edna Flowers in any genealogical material that I have reviewed regarding the Flowers family of Wayne County, NC. My proof that Dicey Rhodes was the daughter of William Rhodes and Edna Flowers is as follows:
- 1. Bill of Sale - James Rhodes, Decd - 17 May 1815, Wayne County, NC Deed Book 11, page
67 - Bill of sale agreeable to the will of James Rhodes, decd, on behalf of Dicey Rhodes, a
minor orphan of his brother William Rhodes.
- 2. George Reasons and wife Disa Reasons deed to Daniel Kornegay, 19 February 1822, Wayne
County, NC Deed Book 12, page 251 - George and Disa Reasons deed to Daniel Kornegay
their 1/8 interest in the land that Edna (Flowers) (Rhodes) Kornegay drew in the division of the
lands of said Edna's father, John Flowers, decd.
-
3. Inventory of estate of William Rhodes, decd, dated 15 April 1800, signed Edna
Rhodes, adm.
-
4. An additional inventory and account of sales of the Estate of William Rhodes, decd, sold on the
21st of July 1801 and returned August 1801 Term of Court, signed Daniel Kornegay, admr.
-
5. Summons, dated 19 February 1801, Edna Kornegay, adm and Daniel Kornegay, adm. in right of
his wife, (widow) of William Rhodes, decd, 19 February 1801.
The foregoing information seems to be clear proof that Edna Flowers, daughter of John Flowers and Clarissa Harrell, married William Rhodes (brother of Gen. James Rhodes) about 1798, when she was 14 or 15 years of age. In addition it proves that only one child, Dicea Rhodes, resulted from this marriage. William Rhodes died in late 1799 or early 1800. His widow, Edna, married Daniel Kornegay in late 1800 or early 1801.
