Notes
General:
Thomas Graves arrived in Virginia in October 1608 on the Mary and Margaret with Captain Christopher Newport's second supply. Thomas was one of the orginal stockholders of the Virginia Company of London. Records indicate that in 1622 a patent was granted to Thoms Graves of Dublin in the realm of Ireland, gent., this is believed to have been a clerical error. The original charter states that the "Adventurers" were to be from London. Thomas was taken prisoner by the natives and was taken to Opechancanough, uncle of Pocahontas. He was later rescued by Thomas Savage. Records indicate that Thomas made frequent trips between England, Ireland, Holland and New England. During one of these trips, in 1609, Thomas married and fathered his first two sons. He returned to Virginia by 1616. Governor Yeardley wrote to Sir Edwin Sandys: "I have entreated Capt. Graves, an ancient officer of this company, to take charge of the people and workes." He was a member of the First Legislative Assembly in America representing Smythe's Hundred. In 1622, during the Indian Massacre of March 1622, Thomas was back in England. By 1623, Thomas had settled in th eastern shore of Virginia. In the 1625 census, Thomas was one of only 51 people living on the eastern shore. Thomas' wife and children joined him in about 1626. Katherine may have been the sister of Raleigh Crowshaw, who traveled on the same ship with Thomas and settled near them. Thomas continued to participate in politics and representing the Accomack area in the 1629-30 and 1632 House of Burgesses sessions. 4
