Reno, Nev. - A private family service will be held for Frances "Baba" Cohen, 79, of Reno, Nev., who died Sunday, Jan. 28.
Cohen, who was born May 2, 1910 in Electra, Texas, came to Ukiah in 1932. She was active both in the business and social life of the community until recent years, when she was incapacitated by Alzheimer's disease.
After her marriage to Dan Cohen, she worked with him in the hardware, electrical, plumbing and appliance business. She was an employee of Mendocino State Hospital for many years.
Frances and Dan Cohen were a charter couple in Ukiah Garden Club and Frances served on the building committee. She participated in the club's first Christmas sales and garden shows. During World War II, she acted as an aircraft observer. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Emblem Club. She also attended the first meetings of the Sun House Guild and was an early life member.
Cohen was an avid rock hound, raised a cactus garden and at one time was deeply involved in raising begonias. After she had become a grandmother, Cohen earned her pilot's license and flew her own little Cessna.
It was her first grandchild who gave her the nickname "Baba." It became her accepted name throughout the community.
Survivors include three children, Carol Cohen Rogina of Ukiah, Darby Cohen of Reno, Nev., and Jack Cohen of San Francisco; grandchildren Pamela Ryan Rotermund and Patty Jo Ryan of Ukiah; Victoria Ryan of Michigan; Bob, Tobin and Todd Cohen of Reno; Dina Cohen of Fresno and David Cohen of San Francisco. There are 10 great-grandchildren.
Cohen will be placed beside her late husband, Dan Cohen, in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. "Sleep Tight Baba" will be engraved on the crypt.
The family prefers memorial donations be made to Alzheimer research.
