General:
According to Elva Morris Dumas. Bill Jahnke was gassed during World War I and suffered terrible headaches for the rest of his life. One day he couldn't take it anymore and committed suicide. She remembers him as a kind man. He once brought a little red table and two chairs for her and her twin brother Everett as a gift on one of their visits.

The 1930 census indicates that William Jahnke's oldest child was born in England. This would fit with William having been in World War I. Perhaps he married in England during the war then brought his family back to the United States. His second child was born in Missouri in about 1921. Another William Jahnke is listed on the same census page a few doors down. He was born in Germany along with his wife Matilda. They were living in the home of their daughter Martha and her husband Ben Trekel both born in Missouri. Possibly this is the family of William Jahnke but I will need to do more searching.

Jahnke, William L. 78, of Santa Barbara passed away October 23, 1997. He was born May 19, 1919 in London, England and has been a resident of Santa Barbara for the past thirty years. Mr. Jahnke served in the U.S. Army during WWII and worked as a letter carrier for many years retiring in 1975. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch No. 290.

Survivors include his wife Kathryn F. Jahnke, two sons, William W. Jahnke or Orinda, CA and James L. Jahnke of Pleasant Hill, CA, a daughter Linda Fye of Las Vegas, NV, a sister Berry Raffetto of San Jose, CA and eight grand -children.

In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held. Arrangements by Welch Ryce Horder. 34
