Margarita L. McCollam
Maryland Formerly of Leechburg
Margarita L. (Tench) McCollam, 86, of Highland, MD., formerly of Leechburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 at 2:48 p.m. in her residence.
Born July 29, 1918 in Leechburg, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Margarita Lawson Tench. She spent most of her life in Washington, D.C. and Highland, MD.
Mrs. McCollam began her government career in Washington, D.C. with the Federal Trade Commission and retired with 30 years of service from the Department of Defense in January of 1994. She received an achievement award for outstanding contributions to the defense mapping agency's support of the U.S. and coalition forces participating in Operation Desert Shield/Storm. She also received a certificate of recognition by the Secretary of Defense for service during the Cold War from 1945-91 for promoting peace and stability for this nation.
Her great love was the arts. She attended the renowned Corcoran Art School in Washington, D.C. Her association with the Washington Animated Cartoon School got her a job offer with Walt Disney Cartoons. She was a beloved cat lover, especially of her cat, Zanzy.
She was a member of St. Mark Episcopal Church in Highland, MD. She is survived by her son, George E. (Eugenia M.) McCollam of Highland, MD.; and her granddaughter Erin G. McCollam also of Highland.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Otis McCollam, on Dec. 22, 1987.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial graveside ceremony at noon Friday in Evergreen Cemetery, Gilpin. Officiating will be the Rev. Gary D. Miller. Local arrangements were entrusted to Clawson's, Second at Main, Leechburg, Pa. 7
