General:
"Portrait and Biographical Record of Jasper, Marshall and Grundy Counties Iowa", published 1894, by Chicago, Biographical Publ. Co., pp. 654-655. Re: William B. Campbell.

"This gentleman is retired from active duties of life and is residing on his fine farm in Lynn Grove Township, Jasper County. He is a native of Tennessee and was born March 26, 1826. He is the son of David Campbell, who was born in Tennessee and who was reared on a farm by an aunt who lived to be ninety-three years old. He was married when twenty years old to Miss Sarah Kimes, who became the mother of our subject.

"In 1830, the family moved to Illinois, locating near Springfield, and later went to Logan County. In 1844 the father took up a claim in Lynn Grove Township, this county, and during the summer broke twenty acres of his land, sowing ten acres in wheat. He then returned to Illinois, and the following spring returned with his family. The first shelter was a pole cabin 10 x 14 feet, in which they spent the first summer, but at the parents' death they lived in a commodious hewed log, weather-boarded house. The father died when sixty-two years old, and the mother when eighty-nine years of age, at the home of a daughter in Marshall County, Iowa.

"The grandfather of our subject on his mother's side was a drafted soldier in the German army. He came to this country during the Revolution with his troops. During a long march he became exhausted and fell behind the ranks, and when the chance was offered fell in the water under some driftwood, and his partner, going a short distance, fell in the road. The soldiers shot his comrade, but he escaped and joined the American troops.

"Our subject remained under the parental roof until reaching his majority, when for a few months he was engaged in making rails. He then took up three hundred and twenty acres of Government land, and after improving it, sold it to great advantage and purchased another claim, which he also disposed of after improving it. Going to Illinois he hired to a good farmer, and after a winter's work went with a drove of hogs to St. Louis and then came to Iowa. He bought a two year old colt and farmed one year. After a year he traded the horse for four yoke of oxen and broke prairie land one summer. That fall he traded his cattle for a one hundred and sixty acre land warrant and laid it on the land where he now resides.

"In 1850 Mr. Campbell was married to Emeline, a daughter of Isaac and Comfort Talbot, and who was born in Virginia. Her parents came to Iowa in 1847 and located in Mahaska County, where the father died. The mother then went to Nebraska, where she too passed away.

"Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, six of whom yet live. Levina A. is married and is the mother of eight children; Margaret M. is next; Isaac E. is married and is the father of three boys; Mary E. is married and is the mother of two children; Eveline and Libbie R. complete the list of those living.

'Immediately after our subject's marriage he built a log house on his father's place and lived there one year; he then erected a like one on his own property. In this he lived twenty-two years before building a better one. The home estate now comprises two hundred and forty fertile and productive acres, on which stock is raised extensively. Mr. Campbell rents his farm to good tenants, and by hard work he and his estimable wife are able to pass their remaining days in peace and comfort. Politically, Mr. Campbell is a Democrat and first voted for James K. Polk." 13
