"Mr. Community Concert," Floyd Cooney, dies last week.
Floyd Cooney, who lived on Fort Bragg's Sanderson Way his grandfather settled over 100 yers ago, died suddenly of a heart attack last week. He was 73.
Cooney was a native of Fort Bragg where his grandfather, Alexander Sanderson, came in 1871 to build bridges for the Union Lumber Co.
Sanderson's daughter Helenda married Antone J. Cooney, an engineer for the California Western Railroad, who also lived in the home area where, for a time, he had a dairy.
Cooney graduated from Fort Bragg High School whre excelled in sports and attended the University of California majoring in forestry and starring in track.
He worked for the U.S. Geodetic Survey in Alaska, was a cruiser for the Union Lumber Co., then went into construction work.
In 1942, he married the former Bethena Arthur, a Fort Bragg teacher for 38 years, who survives him. He also leaves a sister, Lois Cooney, retired teacher. His late brother Tom had three children, Tom, of the University of Hawaii, Joanne Mace of Fort Bragg and Cathy Cooney of San Francisco State University.
Cooney was noteworthy for his hobbies. He was known as "Mr. Community Concert Association" since he not only headed it for seven yers but annually obtained well over 200 memberships. He had a noteworthy stamp collection, a comprehensive collection of historical books, and was active in the Mendocino Art Center.
A special interest was his park-like garden with its magnificent rhododendrons and native plants which brought interested people from throughout the world.
Two letters illustrate the range of his interests and personality.
After his death, children of the neighborhood to whom he was a special companion, brought a note on which each had written a message and gave it to his widow.
"Dear Floyd," one of them, Tony Piver, wrote, "you are a great guy. I wish you were still around. It was really great of you to watch my football games."
The other letter came from Mahor General Edward J. Megarr of the U.S. marines, from Twenty-Nine Palms, expressing the General's thanks for "the warmth of the hospitality in inviting us to your home. . . you and Mrs. Cooney gave us a special perspective of your part of America that we otherwise would not have had the opportunity to enjoy."
Cooney happened to meet General and Mrs. Megarr at a downtown coffee shop and with characteristic impulsive hospitality invited them to his home to see his garden and be guests at dinner.
Funeral services were Saturday with the Reverand Father Richard H. Larsen officiating at the Cannarr Fairlee Funeral Home. 35
