Marion Dumas, Ill Three Days, Dies at Home Scarlet Fever Claims One Victim in This Community The entire community was shocked by the sudden death of Marion S. Dumas, which occurred Thursday afternoon at his home following an illness of a few days. Scarlet fever was the cause of death, Mrs. Dumas and three young children also contracting the dread disease. Private services were held Sunday afternoon from Cleland's Funeral Home, Rev. Elbert Holland officiating. Deceased was born in Healdsburg, July 12, 1901. He is survived by his widow, Lola Ball, and three children, Shirley, Barbara and Ronald. Mrs. Dumas is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Ball of Ukiah and a sister of Mrs. Harold Holliday, Mrs. Lilburn Gibson, Irvin Ball of Ukiah and Ernest Ball of Alameda. A fine type of young manhood, the loss of Mr. Dumas is grievously felt in this town and the deepest sympathy of the community goes out to the grief stricken widow and members of the family.

Fever Cause of His Death Marion Dumas Stricken - Died Within Three Days

The death of Marion Dumas occurred with startling suddenness Thursday last. Mr. Dumas had been ill and, it later developed, he likely had scarlet fever.

Was About City,

He came down town and mingled with friends a short time, returning home he became sick and three days afterwards died.

All Contracted Disease.

Later Mrs. Dumas and the three children broke out with scarlet fever.

A Private Burial.

Sunday, from Cleland's Funeral Home, private burial services were held. Deceased was a fine young man and was a general favorite in Ukiah. He was born in Healdsburg and was 33 years of age. A widow, Mrs. Lola Ball Dumas, and three small children, Ronald, Shirley and Barbara survive. Mrs. Dumas is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Ball, of Ukiah, and a sister of Mrs. Lilburn I. Gibson and Mrs.Harold Holliday, of the Ukiah Valley, and of Ernest Ball, Alameda, and Irvin Ball, of Talmage.

Had Been Laid Up.

Early in December, it appears, Mr. Dumas while working at the Odell ranch--the former Shortt estate--was kicked by a horse, suffering a broken leg. Mr. Dumas went home to recuperate and for about five weeks had been incapacitated from work. He was convalescing and the trip he made to town three days before he contracted scarlet fever and died, was one of the first attempt to get about the unfortunate man had made.
