St. Clair County, Alabama

Note: From the 1850 Census we know that Francis McClung b.1783 in TN was living in St. Clair with his wife, Rhoda, who was 55 at the time. She was born in NC. Francis was one of the McClung men who fought in the War of 1812 from Tennessee and then settled in northern Alabama. He is listed in the index for the 1840 census for St. Clair. In 1830 he is on the Jefferson County Roll. The western edge of St. Clair became part of Jefferson County by 1830. Francis was listed in 1820 in St. Clair County. There should have been a deed registered to him.

P. 31: Two St. Clair Men Who Became Governors:

Rufus Wells Cobb, Governor of Alabama was elected in 1870 and 1880. He was born in Ashville, St. Clair on 25 Feb 1829 and died in Birmingham AL 16 Nov 1913; son of John W. Cobb and Catherine Stevens. He married Feb 1850 at Knoxville, TN to Margaret McClung, daughter of Hugh L. McClung. She died 1865. He was md 2) at Montevello AR 31 Dec 1866 to Frances, d/o richard Fell, formerly of Fell's Point, MD.

Note: Hugh L. McClung weas s/o Col. Charles and brother to James White McClung of Madison County, AL.


The Index to Deeds for St. Clair Co. 1819-1903 did not have McClung in the index.
