Robert McClung listed his birth as 13 Feb 1797 in Warren County, Georgia. (1867 Voting
Registration Loyalty Oaths Individual Pardons, Winston Co., AL-contributed by Connie Rice).
He was a son of John McClung, b. 1763 in PA and probably Elizabeth Bellah. John's parents
were probably 2nd generation in America so we are starting Robert as the third generation.
He was probably the fifth child in his family.
"The McClung Genealogy," 1904 by Wm. McClung lists this family as the Tennessee McClungs on
p. 233. However, research has proven that this family belongs to the Georgia McClungs. The
John McClung, Rev. soldier living in Warren County Georgia is likely the father of this
Robert. John was in Warren Co. in early records and we know from his pension records that
he is the John who was the revolutionary war soldier and who died in Sumner Co., TN.
See Pension record of John.
Robert married Mary O'Dell (have not found this record civilly), probably in Georgia. Robert
married 2) Mary Rhoden in AL according to the McC Gen, 1904. She was born
about 1800 in SC and in the 1880 census she states that both her parents were born in SC.
The family had moved to Alabama by 1815.
By 1850, Robert is listed in the 1850 Hancock (now Winston) county census (p.361,house 58)
with his wife, Mary and the remainder of his family (Elizabeth, Caroline, Warner, Jane,
Marelda, Amelia and Sarah), Leroy having moved to Miss. earlier.
In 1860 Robert is listed in Lawrence County Al census (house 675) at age 65, b. GA; Mary age
55 (she said she was 50 in 1850) and next door to son John McClung and next to him was their
daughter, Elizabeth McClung Barker.
The Alabama Records (Vol. 10 #2, Dec. 1875, p. 4) lists Robert McClung who signed a petition
of Wm. B. Looney for a pension in Winston County in Decatur, AL, June 1867.
We find no further record of Robert. He would have been aged 72 when signing the petition
so it is likely that he is buried in Winston county. We would welcome this record.
In 1880 Mary is found in the census in Winston Co., AL. with Louhena and Dorcas living with her. These
girls both state that their parents were born in South Carolina.
The first known child of Robert and Mary O'Dell McClung was born in 1815 in Alabama. He
married Margaret Green 17 Sep 1841 in Itawamba, MS (Itawamba Mg Rcds). The couple was listed
in the 1841 Itawamba County, MS State Census, p. 11 with no children. In 1850 the family
is listed in the Federal Census for MS, Itawamba Co. with Leroy age 33, farmer, b. AL; wife,
Margaret, age 34, b. Georgia. Their children are Mary, 8; Robert, 7; Lucy, 6; and Sarah E.,
6/12, all born in MS. Leroy enlisted in Confederate Service 15 Apr 1862 at Grayson Co, TX.
at age 45. He served in Hardeman's Reg't Texas Cav. as a private.
The Texas Legislature in Dec. 1863 passed the "Act to Support the Families and Dependents of
Texas Soldiers." A million dollars was set aside to distribute to the families of soldiers
who were in active service, had died in the war or had been disabled because of the war.
Additionally cloth and excess thread from the State Penitentiary were given to these families
after Nov. 1864. Listed among Grayson Co., Texas indigents were: McClung, Mrs., in the
family, taken on 17 Feb 1864.
In the 1880 Fannin County, TX census, Leroy and Margaret, both age 65 years, were enumerated in the home of their daughter Nancy and son-in-law Martin Luther McDaniel. Nancy was age 23, b. in AL. Their children listed were Willis, Maggie, and Rebecca.
Leroy McClung is buried in Timber Creek Cem., northwest of Bonham, Fannin Co., TX. It is
located south of Owens Chapel Cem. The farm where the cemetery is located was owned by
R.C. Walker in the 1920s. The deaths here occurred in the 1870s and 80s. All the markers
are gone, the last ones hauled off in 1968 but the cemetery was published in a book by Floy
Hodge in the 1960s. It includes Leroy McClung 1815-1880. (Material submitted by Bill
Davenport, researcher).

By 1860 they were in Lawrence County with 7 children. They were living between father, Robert,
and sister Elizabeth McClung Barker and a couple of houses from the Steensons. It appears that
Mary Hurley died before 1870. In the 1870 census Polly gives her birthplace as TN (p.22 & 23). He md 2) Mary
(Polly) Lee (1822-1908). It does not appear that there were any children from the second
marriage. Their P.O. was Mount Hope, AL (Lawrence County for about 20 years. In the 1880

The third child of Robert and Mary O'Dell McClung was born 1822 in AL. We are looking for proof of
her existence.
The fourth child of Robert and Mary O'Dell McClung was born ca 1821 in AL. He may have
been named for Wright Roden who married Elizabeth McClung in Blount Co., AL in 1824. Wright McClung
married Sarah (1822-?). They had three children.
William T. McClung is the son of Wright McClung and Sarah (unknown maiden name) was born ca 1853 in AL.

Margaret ca 1874; she was b. ca 1850 in AL. He md 3) Annie S. ca 1917, who was b. ca 1881 in TN.
In 1880 he and Margaret were living in Winston Co., AL (Twp 10, R 9W). By
1930 they were living in Franklin Co., AR where they were enumerated in the census. Bill Davenport,
researcher.
This census record shows a daughter from the first marriage born ca 1874. Perhaps her mother died
in childbirth as William remarried quickly.
The child of William T. and Margaret McClung was born ca 1875 in Winston Co, AL.
The child of William T. and Annie S. McClung was born ca 1919 in Arkansas.
The sixth child of Robert and Mary Rhoden McClung was born Oct 1830 in AL. He married Nancy (b. ca 1830,TN)

#84/84; 22 June 1860; Jas M. Bibb, Asst Marshall) shows Vinyard b. 1833 in AL, Farmer; Nancy 40(?) F TN'
Amanda 14 F TN; Missouri 10 F TN; Tennessee 13 F TN; McCay A. 5 F TN; Martha 3 F AL; Mary F. 1 F AL.
In the 1867 Voting Registration Loyalty Oaths Individual Pardons, Winston County, Alabama, Vineyard lists
his birth as October, 1830 in Blount County, Alabama.
McClung Vinyard, D Company 1st Alabama Cavalry. (This was a Union regiment) Private Private
000263 0001 00001470. Widow Nancy applied for a federal pension on August 26, 1891.
We have not found the marriage record of Vinyard and Nancy. Although Vineyard McClung isn't found in the 1850
census, it would appear that Nancy may have been the wife of John Bird/Byrd. Two children, Amanda and
Tennessee Bird were of the correct ages to be Amanda and Tennessee McClung who were listed on the 1860
census. Missouri Bird/McClung was probably born just after the 1850 census. We don't find John Bird/Byrd
on the 1860 census. Also note the gap in ages in these children.
Benjamin Williams was the son of Mary Williams. Debbie has not identified his father.
1870 census lists: MCCLUNG VINYARD Winston County AL 523 Houston P.O. Federal Population Schedule AL 1870 Federal
Census Index AL10219910.
Vinyard died in 1880 before the census was taken. Nothing further is known about the death/burial of
his wife, Nancy. Their children were Amanda, Tennessee, Missouri, Mackie A., Martha and Mary. Vinyard
lived in Winston Co., AL most of his life and reared his family there.
The first child of Vinyard and Nancy McClung was born c 1846 in TN. She married Benjamin Williams,
also of Winston Co., AL. Amanda "Manda" Williams was on the 1900 census of Cross County, AR living
in the household of her
daughter and son in law, William and Mary A. Williams Bradshaw. Amanda had remarried after the death of
Benjamin Williams to someone by the name of Hammack. At the time of the 1880 census, Amanda and her
children were living in Hardin County, TN. Although Amanda was listed as married, it appears that she
was widowed.
The family of Amanda Williams apparently moved to Mississippi after 1870, and to Tennessee by 1880. They
moved back to Mississippi sometime after the 1880 census (most likely where Amanda married a Hammack)and
then to Arkansas by 1900. The whereabouts of Amanda (Byrd or McClung) Williams Hammack have not been
located after leaving Arkansas.
Their children were James Allen Willians (great grandfather of Debbie Yates)

He bought 80 acres of Alabama land through the Huntsville office in December 1859. He has not been
located in the 1860 census and may have been on his way to Arkansas that year. He enlisted in F Company
of the 24th Arkansas Infantry, CSA, on 6-21-1862 at Washington, Hempstead County, AR. A fellow soldier
in that company was John H. Rhyne (probably a brother-in-law) who died in Oct 1862. There were also two
Barretts in the regiment. Warren, and others, transferred to an Artillery Battery (Harts) on August 24,
1862.
He married Matilda E. Barrett on October 31, 1869. She was born ca 1848. There was a notation "Colored"
in the marriage record. What that means is unclear. Was a clerk making a judgement based on
appearances or was it just an error? We do not know. They are given as White in the censuses.
In the 1870 census his family was at Mount Hope, Lawrence County, AL and in the 1880 census they were in
Tishomingo County, MS.
