George was born about 1770, probably in Georgia. It is likely that he and Georgia were the
children of Robert McClung of Wrightsboro, GA. He named his first child Robert and lived
in the same vicinity. We have not found George in the McClung Genealogy (1904) so he was
probably overlooked as his family had moved far south. His ancestry is probably: son of
Robert, possibly grandson of William (d. 1786 in GA), possibly gt grandson of William (2-2)
The earliest record we have found for George is a tax list in Wilkes Co.
GA. George has 200 acres "next to Kelly". There is also John McClung who
has no land listed at that time. There was one other reference that Claborn Newsom had land
next to (George) McClung. Sometime in 1793 Warren County was formed partly out of Wilkes. The 1794
Warren Co. tax list has these same men:
We know from the Revolutionary War Pension records of John McClung that he was in Warren
County area as a minor and lived in that vicinity until he moved to NC in 1806. His
parents had brought the family to Georgia from Pennsylvania. He also named one of his
eldest childred Robert. We have a Robert in St. Paul Parish records earlier than 1774 so
feel this is probably his uncle. John's parents died shortly after arriving in Georgia.
It is highly likely that George is a child of this Robert as he also named an older child
Robert.
The next record we have of George is the marriage record from Warren Co. Georgia for
George McClung to Jenny Whatley 16 Apr 1796. In later records she signed her name as
Myrada so it is likely that her name was Myrada Jane and she went by Jenny. She was born
in the 1770s (1830c Upson). Some of the Whatley family moved over to Russell Co., AL.
They had the name Ransom Whatley in their family which accounts for the name of Ransom W.
McClung. The "W" likely stands for Whatley.
It appears that George's family had moved into the area as there was a marriage between a
lady who is probably George's sister: Georgia McClung to Wood Moreland 13 Apr 1797 in
Warren County, GA. It is unlikely that a sister would move with a brother into a new area
without her family: possible but unlikely. The Morelands removed to Bibb Co., AL.
The John who came with George may be his brother or more likely, his cousin. We have not
found a marriage record for John at this time. He may have been married in St. Paul Parish
and these records need to be checked.
By 1820, George had died and his orphans were given a draw in a land lottery. Robert and
the orphans were in Jasper County, GA (earlier called Randolph Co.) at the time of the draw.
Robert won lot 45 in Habersham County and the orphans of George won lot 423, Sec. 1 in
Appling county. Merida (sic) McClung also won lot 71 in Appling
county. This would indicate that Robert was the eldest child and the others were minors.
George McClung is also listed as a drawer. George Sr. was deceased by then, so this
lottery was probably done in his name or by a son.
Note: The 1820 census of Georgia was lost except for a few counties. We did not find any of
this family in that year's census. Jasper County records should be searched as well as
Habersham and Appling. Of course we do not know that the family moved to those lots, They
may have just sold them and purchased land somewhere else.
By 1830 Myrada was living with Ransom in Upson County. We have not located this family in
1840. Ransom does not show up in the index to the 1850 census but someone found him in
Thomas County, GA and donated the transcription many years ago.
What little we could find of the probate record for George did not list his heirs. The whole
file may not have survived. We have no record proving this family so we are left with
circumstantial evidence. The likely children of George McClung include:
Possibly the eldest son of George and Myrada Jane Whately McClung was born ca 1800 in
Georgia (probably Greene Co.). His father died when he was under 10. The family was in
Putnam County by then. The fact that he registered to draw in the 1820 land lottery would
indicate that he was of age at that time. This would place his birthdate ca 1798. His
parents marriage in 1796 would indicate that he was the eldest son. There may have been
one child earlier than Robert.
In 1830 Robert is listed in Upson County, GA census with his wife and two sons born between
1825-30. Ransom is also in this county but some distance away. In 1832 Robert C. McClung
won the Gold Lottery for land in Cherokee County. His land was lot #149 in Sec. 2 of Dist.
2. Five years later in 1837 Robert sold to Burrell Mobley (17 Nov 1837, Bk4:27) The month
before Robert had given power of attorney to George Zedder. Then his attorney transacted
the sale of the land. It is possible that Robert had not taken physical possession of this
land but had moved elsewhere.
Robert does not show up on census indexes for 1840 GA or thereafter in Georgia.
He is in the 1850 Florida census in Jackson Co. although he does not appear in the indexes
for the state. James Williams, found him in Marianna, Jackson, FL before 1850. In
the 1880 census of Alabama we find a Robert McClung in Henry County. He was born 1852 in FL
and he states that both of his parents were born in Georgia. There should be some McClungs
showing up in the Florida 1850 census. Henry County is in the southeastern corner of Alabama.
Robert married Susan Ann Davis in Upson county, Georgia on 2 Sep 1827 (Davis Family Bible,
printed "The History of Upson County, GA," p. 384-5). She was born 13 Dec 1810. Their
known children were: Lafayette, George, Ransom, Mary Ann, Nancy, William, Susan B. (Researcher
James Williams)
Children of Robert McClung and Susan Ann Davis as shown on the 1850 census for Jackson
County, Florida in the listing following: (Robert's occupation given as blacksmith).
1-5 LAFAYETTE McCLUNG
GA 2103
The first child of Robert C. and Susan Ann Davis McClung was b. 1829 in Ga.(prob. Upson Co.), md (1)
Nancy Wall, (2) Frances Smith
(3) Fannie Bunton. Apparently this family moved from Georgia to Florida about 1851.
One of his sons Robert McClung died near Cottonwood in Houston County,
Alabama in 1837 (1937?) and is buried in Ramah Cemetery. Lafayette was 2nd Lt. of Company F, 11th
Florida Infantry, C.S.A. Captured 6 April 1865 at Sailor's Creek, Va. We have not found in censuses
after 1860.
The 1860 Census of Jackson County, FL finds him with Frances J. b. 1824 and with two children: Mary F.
and Robert A. Their post office was Marianna (p. 48-9). Also living with them are three children who
were probably from Frances's first marriage as they are all named Smith: Henry S. 14; Sarah A. age 9; John aged 8.
The first child of Lafayette McClung was born ca 1841 in Georgia.
The second child of Lafayette McClung was born March 1852 in Jackson County, Florida. We have not found
this family in the 1870 census but by 1880 Robert is living in Henry County, Alabama in Chipola Twp.
(p. 539C.) His wife, Sarah, was born 1854 in FL but both her parents were born in Georgia. They were
aged 28/26 but had no children. The family remained there and was enumerated in the 1900 census.
Robert's wife did not give her name as Sarah and says she was born in GA. However they say they have
been married 28 years. The name looks like Lepost but hard to read. They adopted a daughter, Ruth,
who was born Oct 1894 in AL. She gives both her parents born in Georgia. Apparently this is the only
child they had.
The second child of Robert C. and Susan Ann Davis McClung was born 1831 in Ga. (prob. Upson Co.)
The third child of Robert C. and Susan Ann Davis McClung born 1833 in Ga. (prob. Upson Co.)
The fourth child of Robert C. and Susan Ann Davis McClung was born 1834 (prob. Upson Co). She married
David H. Newton on 2 May 1858 in
Jackson Co., Florida. Two children - (1) Nora - b. 1872,married Charles Blalock
(2) Reuben R. - b. 1873, married Sarah Perkins. David is buried in the family plot in Red
Hill cemetery next to Reuben (R.R.) as are some of their children. David has a civil war
headstone. After Reuben's death in 1927 Sara Elizabeth Perkins Newton remarried a man
named Williams. She is buried in Graceville. (Kathi Kelly, researcher)
The fifth child of Robert C. and Susan Ann Davis McClung was born 1837 in Ga.
The sixth child of Robert C. and Susan Ann Davis McClung was born 1840 in Ga.
The seventh child of Robert C. and Susan Ann Davis McClung was born 1843 in Ga.
Possible child of George and Merada Jane Whately McClung was b. ca 1796 in Georgia. He married in Warren
County to Mary Davis 31 Mar 1836. He is enumerated in the 1830 Census of Upson County, GA on p.
108 (we need the transcription). Also in the county at the time was Robert McClung.
We find Ransom McClung b. 1800 in the 1850 census of Thomas County, GA. This is on the
Florida line. He is married to Martha b. 1804 in GA. By 1860 they were living in Holmes County, FL. We have
not found them in the 1870 census.
The first child of Ransom W. and Mary Martha Davis McClung was born ca 1836 in GA.
The only indication we have at this time of the existence of this man is the 1820 lottery
draw from Jasper County to Appling Co. There is no indication of his presence in the census
records so the entry may have been in the name of George, the husband of Myrada.
