This indenture made this the tenth Day of May One Thousand seven hundred and eighty, ye fifth year of the Commonwealth of Virginia Between Samuel Lawrence of Botetourt County Colony and Dominion of Virginia of the one part and John McClung of Rockbridge County Colony and Dominion aforesaid of the Other Part. Witnesseth that for sum or in consideration of the sum of Eleven thousand Pounds Current Money of Virginia to him the said Sam'l Lawrence in hand paid by the said John McClung the whereof I the said Sam'l Lawrence by the said John McClung before The Sealing and Delivery of those presents and Promise the receipts whereof I do hereby acknowledge and Hereby doth Discharge the said John McClung and his heirs Etc by these presents the s'd Samuel Lawrence hath bargained and sold unto the s'd John McClung now in his Actual possession being by (?lestic_) of a Bargain and Sale thereof made by the s'd Samuel Lawrence unto the said John McClung his heirs and assigns forever - one certain tract or parcel of Land containing one hundred and thirty-three ares and Contained within the boundaries thereof be the same more or less lying and being in the County of Botetourt lying on the south side of James River and bounded as follows Vis: Beginning at a locust stake on the River and runneth thence down the river one hundred and seventy-two poles to a hickory on the bank of a river thence east one hundred and forty poles to two white oaks on the side of the mountain North twenty four degrees west two hundred and forty poles to two pines corner James Lawrence and with his line south fifty five degrees west one hundred and eighty poles to the beginning to have and to hold the said land Conveyed and every part thereof with their appurtenances unto the said John McClung his heirs and assigns to the only proper use and being of him the said John McClung and his Heirs and Assigns forever and the said Sam'l Lawrence for himself his Heirs Etc: Doth Covenant, promis and grant To the said John McClung his heirs and Assigns by these presents the Said Sam'l Lawrence now at the time of selling and delivering and of these presents are acknowledged sure perfect and (_?_) Estate of Inhabitants an fee simple of in and to the Promises hereby granted and that he the said Samuel Lawrence hath good power and (__?ful) and absolute authority to grant and convey unto John McClung in manner and form aforesaid and that the said (R__) now and forever hereafter shall remain before and claim from all and singular gifts bargains sales Diverse and Rights of (do?) by him the said Samu'l Lawrence (sone?) or suffered a Commite The quit rent to grow (Dacs?) and pay all to the Commwealth of Virginia on for its use as the Court shall Direct and Lastly that the said Samuel Lawrence Etc his heirs all and singular the Promise hereby granted with Here appurtenances unto the said John McClung heirs and assigns against the said Samu'l Lawrence hath hereunto set his hand and Seal the Day and Year above written.

This indenture of bargain and sale was acknowledged by this within Samuel Lawrence to John McClung Parties hereto and Ordered to be recorded. Test: Dellasy (?) Clk.

Know all men by these presents that said Wm. Madden, Willaim Branton (?) said Tho's read is or are held and firmly bound unto Tho's Jefferson, Esqr, Governor of Virginia in the sum of thirty thousand pounds for the payment and whereof will and truly to be made to s'd governor and his successors we bind ourselves jointly and severally our and every of our joint and several Heirs ___ and doth firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 12 Day of May 1780.

The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above Bound William Madison high sheriff of the county of Botetourt hath undertaken the collection of the taxes all (__) laid on by an act of the Session) of the Assembly and to establish a fund to borrow money for the Use of the United States and this purpose is therefore the said Wm. Madison shall Deligently and faithfully collect the said papers levied on the Inhabitants of this country and shall justly and fairly acct for the same to the commissioner of the tax and treasure of the state in the same manner and at the time presented by Law for Selling of its (?_auting) for the taxes in assessment then this obligation to be paid
