Gen Henry Halleck

Civil War Photo Gallery

This is my little effort to try to preserve something which very soon may disappear ~ our original photographic record of the U.S. Civil War.  Although there are many, many books written on the subject with countless number of photographic reprints, there are only relatively few original prints remaining publicly available for private ownership.  Most of the photos below were copied from commercial sites advertising these photos for sale, so when they are purchased they will probably be deleted from that commercial site and may be lost to the public forever.  I feel that would be a shame.

I do not have any of these original photos, and do not have any financial interest in presenting them here, so please do not request a copy of them from me.  For those interested in checking into the photo availability, I've included a cross-reference for each photo, which cites the general source URL and gives you an option to link to the site at the bottom of the page.  Please note that on-line auctions generally last only about a week, so those photos referenced by these sites are probably already gone.

As a final note, I claim no copyright privilege on the individual images on this page, and I hope I'm not infringing on the copyright of another, but I felt it important to preserve a little bit of the vanishing photographic record of "this late unpleasantness." There may also be a remote chance that this site may help someone researching their genealogical roots.  Like displays in most photo galleries, the following photos are not in any particular order or sequence, so just take a few minutes to browse.  Obviously you may have to wait a few minutes for the images to load, because there are over 50 graphic images on this page.

Subject: Byron ADAMS Civil War Photo

Dear Bob, I noticed that you had a photo of Byron ADAMS NY10th Heavy Artillery Co. H.  Byron was my great grandmother's first husband. How are you connected to him? My great great grandfather, Nathaniel PERKINS and his brother, George Washington PERKINS were also in that infantry. Also, George's son. They enlisted out of Brownville, Jefferson County, NY.  I'm curious as to how you obtained a photo of Byron ADAMS. Where, when, who and how did you get it?  What kind of information do you have on them if any? Do you have the story of the migration pattern of that infantry? I'm curious about Pennsylvania Volunteers, also.

Kindly, Jan Johnson

BOY IN ZOUAVE UNIFORM-Civil War:  Here is a unique Civil War period cabinet card image of young boy dressed in a period Zouave uniform.  It was common to dress children in handmade military uniforms during the Civil War to show patriotism.  Obviously this young lad's father was a Zouave.
