Mount Union, May 28.--Mrs. Martha Annie HAMMAN, for many years a resident of Hill Valley, died Saturday morning at 12:15 after an illness of two hours, suffering a heart attack, at her home at Singers Gap. She had been in her usual health prior to this. Born March 5, 1856 in the vicinity of Orbisonia, which was at that time called--------Furnace, Mrs. Hamman was a daughter of William and Ellen (LONG) RINKER. She was married to Peter HAMMAN March 17, 1874 at Cora. The greater part of her life was spent in Hill Valley. The husband, who died in 1909, was a Civil War veteran and served in Co. 4, 88th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, Infantry. Mrs. Hamman was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Singers Gap and was active in the work of the church. Surviving are the following daughters: Mrs. Edna PULLEN and Mrs. Fannie HOOPER, of Altoona; Mrs. Josephine SWOPE, of Hill Valley and Mrs. Nettie GUTCHALL, of Huntingdon. Four brothers as follows also survive: Benson RINKER and Joseph RINKER of Allenport; Frank RINKER of Huntingdon and William Curt RINKER of Tyrone. Enlistment of Colored Soldiers:
"...A finer site could not have been chosen. It is in the midst of one of the richest and best cultivated sections of country in Eastern Pennsylvania, upon a hill side, near a stream of running water. As yet, the men are only furnished with what is called the shelter tent but they seem to be pleased with their quarters and their fare, and manifest the very best spirits. Lieut. Col. Lewis Wagner, of the 88th Pennsylvania (invalided) is in command of this first regiment, and considering they have only been under discipline for a week, he has done wonders with them. On Saturday about one hundred and fifty recruits were taken to the camp, inspected and mustered into the service. Among them was a company of some fifty colored men raised in Buffalo, who have been vainly awaiting the raising of a colored regiment in New York State. A full brass band of colored musicians is attached to this regiment and a drum corps also colored. The commissioned officers of the regiment are all white men of experience in war, the non-commissioned officers being colored..."

On Mon, 19 Jun 2000 14:19:33 -0400 Edward Harding <[email protected]>, Washington, North Carolina writes: This may be something some people are aware of and others not aware of. In this listing, I saw where on March 10 - 15, 1862, Manassas is mentioned and then on August 30, Bull Run was mentioned. It was the same place. There were several places that had different names, depending on if named by Federals or Confederates. Federals often named battles for nearby streams, while Confederates named them after the towns. I thought to some on this listing, these might be of interest:

Federal Confederate
Bull Run
Antietam (Creek)
Stone's River
Fair Oaks
Elkhorn Tavern
Manassas
Sharpsburg
Murfreesboro
Seven Pines

Story of Martin Kuhn Reese, 1845-1926 of Providence Twp., Lancaster County was a paid substitute for John Harrison Long and entered Co.F of the 88th Infantry at Philadelphia in March 11 of 1865. Based on different battle records given for the 88th, the 88th was involved in action at two battles that were considered part of the Richmond-Petersburg campaign, and the Appomattox campaign. The Appomattox campaign below also includes the White Oak Road Battles. These campaigns were fought after Martin's enlistment date. It is unknown whether Martin was assigned to the unit prior to these battles or after the surrender of Appomattox, but he was mustered out in Washington D.C. June 30, 1865 with the unit after the Grand Review of May 1865. Martin was preceded in volunteering for service by his two older brothers Frank and Ed, both of whom were Yankee Horse Soldiers with the noted 9th PA Cavalry, 92nd Regiment known as the "Lochiel Cavalry."
