On The Move!

Although Joshua and his family were constantly moving around the Lancaster and Claughton areas between 1846 to 1862 (this was probably due to a combination of finding work and an enlarging family), the family seems to disappear untill 1881.

They suddenly appear on the 1881 census in the Rossendale Valley area of Lancashire. Joshua and wife Elizabeth, plus daughter Jane (Widow?), son Robert and a grand-daughter Elizabeth Ellen Procter are present. Also living nearby are sons Thomas; John; George and Joshua. They are all married, most having children (Elizabeth Ellen is John's daughter on the 1891 census). I am in the process of looking for Joshua's son's marriage details to give the locations of the family between 1861 and 1881.

Robert Procter (Joshua's youngest son) marries in 1881, after the census has been taken, and I could not find his family on the 1891 census rolls for Bacup (part of Rossendale). I am eagerly waiting for the publication in 2002 on the internet, of the 1901 UK census returns (this will help identify children and their years of birth and places of birth), and hence help locate the family's 1891 location.

I know that Robert had at least one other son, apart from Joshua, due to the fact that my father Harold had a cousin Harold Procter/Proctor who worked on "Lord's" garage forecourt as a pump attendant in the 1970's. I only know this due to the fact my father met him once re-fuelling the car there while I was in the car
