bullet Deborah Stonemets(1) was born on 27 Oct 1790 in Berkley Co. VA.(1) She died on 20 Aug 1873 in Rome, Perry Co., IN. She was buried in Conner Cemetery, Rome, IN.

Deborah, the third child of Casper and Ann, was born 27 October 1790, probably in Berkeley County, Virginia, now West Virginia, and traveled with her parents to Cincinnati between 1800 and 1806. The account of her marriage on 11 December 1807 to George Kyler appears in a Cincinnati newspaper, Liberty Hall and Cincinnati Mercury; the issue dated 14 December 1807. James Ewing, Esquire, performed the wedding.

After George's death in 1819, Deborah Kyler, left with six small children to care for, lost no time in remarrying, She and Orison Sherwood were married by the Reverend Joshua L. Wilson on 3 February 1820 (Hamilton County Marriage Records). Before her marriage, however, Deborah is listed as a widow in the Cincinnati Directory for 1819; at that time she is living on one side of what is now Fountain Square. According to the publishers of the Directory, there were at this time 10,285 inhabitants, 1890 buildings of which 387 were of brick and stone, two stories and upward, 45 one story buildings of the same material and, of wooden buildings, there were 615 two stories and upward, and 843 one story structures.

"In the early part of 1820 the winter was severe, the ice in the Ohio River breaking up on the 8th of February, after it had been frozen over for three weeks. In 1822 an interesting political contest occurred between General Harrison and James W. Gazlay, in which the hero of Tippecanoe was beaten for Congress by 342 votes. In 1824 a notable event occurred in a visit by General the Marquis de Lafayette - 'The day of his arrival as well as that which followed, and his departure at midnight will be remembered by those who witnessed the scene as long as memory lasts. All was grand; but the closing scene at 12 o'clock at night, with illuminations on both sides of the river, the beautiful display made by all the steamboats in port, the procession of military companies, the firing of cannon from our landing, from the boats and from the arsenal from Newport, with martial music seems to me, after a lapse of fifty years, the most brilliant sight of my life'. Mr. L'Hormnedieu" (The Centennial Review of Cincinnati).

We can imagine the excitement with which Deborah and her family viewed these stirring events.

A probate record (Court of Common Pleas 24 April 1820) reflects Debby Sherwood (late Debbie Kyler) and Orson Sherwood, her husband, petitioning for permission to sell real estate in Cincinnati, part of the estate of George Kyler. On 27 August 1821, Deborah repetitioned for the sale; former appraisement being too high, it is set aside and new appraisement ordered. On 8 September 1821 on petition of Deborah Sherwood; late Deborah Kyler, sale is ordered of the west end of Lot 268 (this lot, by the way, is where the Home State Bank Building is now situated). In that petition, no mention is made of Orison Sherwood and Deborah indicates that she has been the sole support of her six small children, and that they have suffered very much for several months past as she has had to contract debts to support them. We must assume from the above that she and Orison have separated or divorced, for no more mention is made of him, nor is there an estate record for him. Deborah retained a portion of Lot 268, 16 feet wide and 90 feet deep as her dower portion. Deborah retained her dower portion of Lot 268 for many years, and we find a lease of the land made in 1831 for the yearly rent of $25.00. By this time she is living in Rome, Perry County, Indiana, having moved there sometime around 1825. The next transaction that takes place on this piece of property is in 1841. Deborah and all the heirs of George Kyler convey the property and Deborah's life estate in the property to an Andrew Ernst of Cincinnati for the sum of fourteen hundred dollars to the heirs and two hundred dollars to the widow. This transaction is invaluable in that it lists all the living children and their current spouses. Namely: Ann Rowe, Samuel Hyde and Mary Hyde, Casper Cockrell and Elizabeth Cockrell, Frederick Conner and Susan Conner, Kenneth M. Deweese and DeSorah Deweesz, and George P. Kyler and Louisa G. Kyler, as well as the widow "Debby" Sherwood. (Hamilton County Deeds No. 79, page 314)

The first official record we have of Deborah in Rome is a suit brought by her against Andrew (?) and Samuel Conner in 1829 for a debt of $225 and damages of $50. (The inhabitants of Rome seemed to find suing one another or being sued by the state to be a favorite pastime). The defendants pleaded partial payment and usury, however, after a jury could not agree, the judge found for the plaintiff. (Perry County Circuit Court Records March Term 1829) In 1832 we find that she is lending money to her son-in-law Thomas Ricks ($375) against which he pledges his present stock of dry goods, groceries and hardware in the town of Rome also the lot and house where he resides, and the lot and unfinished house thereon, also owned by him. These seem to be pretty stiff terms. (Perry County Deeds)

Another interesting deed executed by Deborah conveyed to her daughter-in-law, Louisa G. Kyler, Lot No. 127 in Rome. Circumstances of the transfer were that it was in consideration of services having been rendered to Deborah by Louisa during the past eight months, and services to be rendered by Louisa taking care of her, Deborah, during the time of her natural life. The deed was executed in March 1868, and transfer of property recorded August 9, 1882. (Deed Book 15, page 338, Perry County Deeds). We find Deborah living with George and Louisa Kyler in the 1870 census of Perry County; she is 79 years old.

Deborah died 20 August 1873, and is buried in Conner Cemetery, Rome, near her parents Casper and Ann Stonemets, her brother David H. Stonemets, her son Orison J. Sherwood and her sister Louisa Ricks. Her son George was named administrator of her estate. There are three reports filed by him as administrator on record in the Court of Common Pleas Order Book in Perry County. The dates and text of these reports are given in the book by Billie L. Stanton, referenced herein. Parents: Casper Steinmetz. Parents: Casper Stonemetz and Ann Howell.
