SAMUEL FOX FAMILY

(24) COMFORT STANCLIFT married EUNICE [RANNEY] FOX

SAMUEL6 FOX (Joseph5, Richard4, Thomas3, Lord Henry2, Sir Stephen1)

Son of Joseph and Esther [Sparks] Fox of Glastonbury, CT and descended from Thomas Fox, the immigrant ancestor, from England. He was born 1731, according to his age cited in his father's probate records. On Aug. 5, 1746 Samuel aged 15 chose his uncle, Thomas Sparks, to be his guardian(1). Samuel married before 1751 EUNICE RANNEY daughter of John and Eunice [Wright] Ranney of Middletown Upper Houses, now Cromwell, Middlesex County, CT(2).

Samuel and Eunice Fox appeared in the East Middletown church records as a married couple during the year 1751. Samuel was "lost at sea" and died before December 2, 1756. His inventory was taken on that date. In the letter of Administration his widow, Eunice, and brother, Hosea Fox, posted the bond and Eunice was appointed Administratrix on his estate(3).

Her identity was established by the notes of Frank Farnsworth Starr(4) based upon a Middletown land record abstracted by Mr. Star as follows "March 14, 1760 Eunice Fox widow of Glastonbury to Obadiah Allen of Midtn 155 a (acres) west 3 Mile Hill in Westermost range of land in Midtn land formerly sold by John Ranney & Eunice his wife before she was 21 years old"(5). Three Mile Hill is located in Cromwell which was then called Middletown Upper Houses. Obadiah Allen was a cousin of Eunice [Ranney] Fox. Eunice [Ranney] Fox Stanclift had three children before her marriage to Comfort. These children probably lived in Comfort's household while the family lived in Chatham, but seemed to remain in Glastonbury when Comfort's family moved from the Middletown area to Litchfield County, CT.
