Hi, Folks;

I've received some correspondence from Gordon Keith [son of B.J. Keith,
page 169, Keith Book] including the following notes on Peter P. and his
progeny.
Personally, I'm more and more suspicious of the amount of German blood
in this line. Note that Colonel Dunlap says: "they lived in the midst of
Germans in Lancaster County with other Keiths that were." Were German?
Hmmm.
There is more on Benjamin K., Benjamin K. Jr., and George Washington
Keith, which I'll send later. Transcription of manuscript sent to Bill Reque by Gordon Keith of Delhi,
Iowa written by Col. Howard Dunlap, a grandson of George W. Keith: Peter P. Keith was born in the year 1765, in Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania. To date, the identity of his parents and names of any
brothers and sisters remain a mystery. Based upon area histories
relating to some of his children, Peters father came to the PA area in
the late 1750s or early 1760s from HOLLAND. There is nothing to
indicate, at present, that Peter or his father were Dutch , although
they lived in the midst of Germans in Lancaster County with other Keiths
that were.
The histories indicate that his father was active in the Revolutionary
War, perhaps more as a provider of services [blacksmith, gunsmith] than
as a soldier and suffered some economic losses as a result. Per P. grew
to manhood in the area and learned the trade of bell
making/blacksmithing. After the end of the war when families were
moving to the frontier, it is assumed that Peter P. made a trip or two
to the Bedford County area [later Huntingdon Co. PA] for land. After the
indians were no longer a threat, he married a German girl, Maria Heade,
in 1789, and moved with his father to Huntingdon Co. PA in 1790. He
remained in this area, Hopewell Township, until about 1814. Other than
perhaps his son, Benjamin K., all his children [12] were born here. In
addition to farming and practicing his trade, he was active in local
public duties, such as constable / custodian of the poor. By the 1814
period, most of his family were grown and some married. It is not clear
who followed whom, but the Keiths moved to the frontier in Morgan
County Ohio in the area that became part of Noble County. While the
older children and their families made a name for themselves in Jackson
Township, establishing the village of Keith, Ohio, some of the younger
members stayed with their parents. Peter P. and his wife remained in the
Noble County, Ohio area until 1836, when they moved to Winnebago County,
Illinois with some of the younger children. Peter P. Keith died in 1846
and was buried in the Flora Cemetery, Flora Township, Boone County,
Illinois. Children of Peter P. Keith Benjamin K. Keith Born 1790. He and family settled in Noble County
Ohio. He is buried in the Keith Cemetery at Keith, Ohio. Peter P. Keith, Jr. Born 1792. He and family settled in Noble Co. He is
buried in the Keith Cemetery at Keith, Ohio. Joseph Keith. Born 1793. As above. Catherine Keith. Born 1794. Married Nathan Newton. It is assumed that
she and family settled in Noble County Ohio and is buried in the Keith
Cemetery. It appears that she took on the responsibility of a mentally
deficient sister, Molly Keith, born 1810. Catherines son, Alexander
Newton evidently continued to care for her until her death. Adam Keith. Born 1795. He and his family started in Noble County but
settled in Furnas County, Nebraska. He is buried in the Spring Green
Cemetery, Beaver City, Nebraska. Elizabeth Keith. Born 1797. Married Joseph Shirley. She and family
started in noble county Ohio, but settled in Blackhawk County, Iowa. She
is buried in the Peyner Cemetery, Peyner Township, Blackhawk County,
Iowa. Balsar Keith. Born 1798. He and his family settled in Boone co.
Illinois, having followed his father to that area. He is buried in Flora
Cemetery. Lewis Keith. Born 1801. He stopped off in LaPorte County, Indiana on his
way west with his father. He is buried in the Scipio Township,. LaPorte
County, Illinois [sic]. Susan Keith. Born 1802 [?] The 1850 census for Morgan county Ohio notes
her in the county infirmary as an Idiot It is assumed she in buried
in county cemetery for the poor. Julia Keith. Born 1803. Married Lewis Shirley. She and her family
stopped and settled with her father in Winnebago county, Illinois. She
is buried in the Shirley Cemetery, Cherry Valley Township, Winnebago
County, Illinois. Molly Keith. Born 1810. Mentally deficient. Cared for for her sister,
Catherine Keith Newton and her nephew [sic - see above] Alexander
