304. the Hon. Deacon Timothy Metcalfe

(noting that Ebenezer Metcalf and Hannah Abel, had a child, Timothy, without stating date of birth, this information was probably taken from the birth certificates of the Metcalf children from the Vital Records of Lebanon which fail to state birth dates for Ebenezer, Benjamin or Timothy, perhaps because they were born elsewhere?).

2Vital Records of Lebanon, Connecticut (FHL No: 1312154), page 159.
Death Certificate of Ebenezer Metcalf notes that he had a son, "Timothy Metcalf was born" although no date is given, probably because he was born elsewhere.

(listed as "born" but with no birth date).

Timothy apparently died intestate and this record sets up administration of his estate. Names Hannah Metcalf, "widow & relict" of the deceased who receives a one-third interest as her dower; children and heirs are listed as Abiel, Hannah, Alice, Abigail, Ebenezer, Timothy, Anne and Jabez. Shows that Timothy died before 2 Apr 1774, the date of this record.

I have been to the Gurley (Pink) cemetery on my way home. But before Igo any further, I just want to know if today is your luck day or mine because I bought lottery tickets for tonight and really could use an early retirement. I probably would use my share (oh, I would call my brother and sister and share it with them) to give one of my two jobs and study genealogy and do lookups for people more often.

So on to the "good stuff." On my way home I stoped at the Gurley cemetery and just as I remember it, there are two sections, an old and currently used new section. The old section is about an acre + in size and probably 70% filled with stones and a lot of those are from the late 18th century. A LOT! A bunch of those are broken and unreadable
"fieldstone" types with no surviving inscription. So I figured there was a) no way this stone survived nearly 225 years and b) probably no way to find it now at dusk.

SO,

One of us is walking with the grace because on my way back to my car from one walk through... I found it. Standing straight and unbroken, its probably 2 1/2 feet wide and 4 feet high. Standard late 18th century type with a face carved at the top and scrolled down the sides, the full inscription is:

In Memory of Deacon Timothy Metcalf who died March 10th 1775 in ye 63d
Year of his Age Mark ye Perfect Man & Beholde ye Upright for ye End of
ye Man is Peace.

All I have to say is... wow! I hope someday to be this lucky. Personaly, that is one of the best moments I've had since I started researching my own family and deciding to help others.

How about us meeting when you come out in August, I would be happy to bring you to the burial site. You can buy me a drink or if you prefer a coffee.

I don't yet have a digital camera but in the morning I plan to stop at the cemetery and take some pix to send you.

All I have to say is,

I'm moved,

Andrew."
