608. Ebenezer Metcalfe Cornet of the Troop
1Frances Manwaring Caulkins, History of Norwich, Connecticut, Hartford, CT: the Author, 1866, 236.
"Ebenezer Metcalf, from Dedham, married in 1702, Hannah, daughter of Joshua Abel of the West Farms, and had five children baptized, extending to 1711. He was on the roll of inhabitants in 1718, but removed to Lebanon, and there died Nov. 5, 1755, aged 76. He was a descendant of Michael Metcalf, who had lived at Norwich in England, but emigrated to this country with his wife and nine children in 1637, and settled at Dedham."2Vital Records of Dedham, Massachusetts.

"Captain John Sabin, the first settler of Pomfret and leading citizen of northeastern Connecticut, was appointed by the Assembly, October, 1726, major of the regiment in the County of Windham. Upon the petition of several persons, the Assembly ordered Major Sabin, a year later, "to raise a troop in the County of Windham, and to enroll such suitable persons as will voluntarily enlist themselves and engage to equip themselves well for that service; and if there appear and enlist to the number of fifty persons, the major then lead them to the choice of all proper officers." The requisite number appearing, the troop was organized in May following, with Joseph Trumbull for captain, Jabez Huntington, lieutenant, Ebenezer Metcalf, cornet, and Thomas Newcomb, quarter-master."
(It was thought possible that Ebenezer's son Ebenezer, born in 1703, might be the Ebenezer who served as Cornet of the Troop. Nevertheless, Ebenezer, Jr. was only 22 in 1727 and his father was aged 48. The other offices were all in their thirties and forties at the time of appointment, and I have thus considered that Ebenezer, Sr was the Cornet. The other officers, and their ages in 1727 were: Capt. John Sabin, age 33; Lt. Jabez Huntington, aged 37; Thomas Newcomb, quartermaster, aged 36; and Lt. Joseph Trumbull, aged 48. While all the other officers also had sons of the same name, only Joseph Trumbull had a son who was then 22. All the others were too young or not yet born).14Website, http://www.town.bedford.ma.us/flag.html.

Cornet, normally with one "t", was a military rank. It was bestowed upon a junior officer and was comparable to that of ensign, one who carried the colors. Glad I could answer and help you out. John R. McCann, Colonel, USA, RET."16Stafford, CT Deeds, 1:557.

"Hannah Abell, born January 15, 1679; died June 17, 1756; married Ebenezer Metcalf April 28, 1702 at Norwich, Conn., born February 14, 1680 at Dedham, Mass., died November 15, 1755, son of Jonathan Metcalf and Hannah Kenric, daughter of John Kenric. Jonathan was the son of Michael Metcalf and Mary Fairbanks, daughter of John Fairbanks. Ebenezer had a deed from Caleb Abell to a tract of land in Lebanon, Conn., one side bounded by the town lines of Norwich and Lebanon, and north of the village of Bozrahville, Conn. He or his sons appear to have lived on this land. The family had several houses and lived in the locality of Norwich and Lebanon for many years.

(Incorrectly stating that Hannah was the child of Joshua Abell. According to Abell Family in America, supra, Hannah went to live with her uncle, Joshua Abell, upon the death of her father, causing some genealogists to conclude incorrectly that he was her father.).4Horace Abell, Abell Family in America, 55.
"[C]onfusion undoubtedly arose from the custom of orphaned children, especially minors, being located in the homes of their next of kin and to all intents becoming members of such families. We therefore find Hannah, probably oldest daughter of Benjamin, in the household of Joshua from the death of her father in 1699 at least until her marriage in 1702 to Ebenezer Metcalf."5Charles Booth, One Branch of the Booth Family, page 23.
