Sir Richard le Scrope, however, was supported by many men from other areas, including Chaucer, then aged 40. It became apparent that both had used the same arms for centuries but Sir Richard won since he had the more powerful friends. Sir Robert adopted new arms, since he refused to "beare the other coate with a difference.".
Sir Robert was defendant in the case of Scrope v. Grosvenor, filed by Sir Richard le Scrope and Sir John Daniell, challenging Sir Robert's use of his coat of arms. The suit was tried before the Constable and Chief Marshal of England from 1386 to 1390. Nearly all the knights of Cheshire and Lancashire were examined concerning the Grosvenor use of arms along with several abbots and clergy. Sir Robert was unanimously supported, with testimony showing that the arms in question had been in use as early as his ancestor, Gilbert le Grosvenor in 1066, and had been in use in many battles ever since.
