Hi David: Christian de Mowbray (the woman about whom you enquired) was married three times, first to ______(possibly Felton), by which marriage she subsequently claimed dower in the manor of Thriston, Northumberland; second, to Richard de Emeldon (died 1333), wealthy merchant, Mayor of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland; and third, William Plumpton, Knt., of Plumpton, co. York. She had one daughter by her Emeldon marriage and two children by her Plumpton marriage. The 1480 Visition of the North (published as Volume 144 of the Surtees Society) refers to her as "filia Mowbray." The Plumpton Correspondence states she is called "de Mowbray" to a Harleian Manusscript 1487. Her place in the Mowbray family is established by a 1334 item in the Close Rolls, following the death of her second husband, Richard de Emeldon, in which it is recorded that she appointed her brother, John de Mowbray, to set out her dower in the Emeldon estates. The only John de Mowbray in the Patent and Close Rolls of this period appears to be her

brother, John de Mowbray, 3rd Lord Mowbray. Beyond that, I can add that Christian's grandson, Sir William Plumpton, "a brave and daring knight," was executed in 1405 for participation in a plot involving "some of the family" of Christian's nephew, Thomas Mowbray. So, clearly the two families were closely associated with each other. Best always, Douglas Richardson E-mail: [email protected]."
