Dear Newsgroup ~

A while back, we were discussing the various colonial immigrants who descend from the newly discovered royal ancestry of Ela de Herdeburgh (living 1343), wife successively of Walter de Hopton and William le Boteler.

There seems to be no question that Ela de Herdeburgh had at least one son by her first marriage, Walter Hopton, Knt., of Hopton, co. Salop, who was born about 1303, and died in 1367. This Sir Walter Hopton eventually obtained the rights to the manor of Prilleston, Norfolk, which property had been held by Ela's parents, Roger and Ida de Herdeburgh. On Sir Walter Hopton's death in 1367, he was succeeded by a young Cherleton grandson [see Cal. IPM 12 (1938): 180-181; 13 (1954): 86] who evidently died rather quickly without issue.

By 1377, the Hopton properties including Prilleston were in the hands of a Sir John Hopton, presumably Walter's nephew, who married Isabel Burley, daughter of Sir John Burley, K.G., of Birley, co. Hereford (see, for example, Desc. Catalogue of Ancient Deeds 3 (1900): 195). This last named couple are known to have been the great-grandparents of Sir Thomas Hopton, living 1445 (see G. Beltz Memorials of the Most Noble Order of the Garter (1861), pp. 257-260). Sir Thomas Hopton, living 1445, in turn is ancestral to two colonists, Richard More of
the Mayflower and Robert Abell.

Does anyone know of any evidence to prove that Sir John Hopton, living 1377, was nephew to Sir Walter Hopton, died 1367. The descent of the Hopton family lands and the 1623 Visitation of Shropshire supports the relationship, but I'd like to see better evidence if available. Unfortunately, Eyton's Antiquities of Shropshire doesn't cover the
later generations of the Hopton family. Does Morris have anything helpful on this matter?

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah."

son and heir, was still a minor in January 1256/7, in but appears to have come of aee in 1258, in which year he was summoned to the Parliament at Oxford. In October 1259 he was preparing to cross to France with the King to spend Christmas in Paris. He was at Pontigny, December 1266. In the following year he took part with the Barons against the King, and was one of the fourteen excepted from the general pardon of December 1261; at the battle of Lewes (14 May 1264) he fled with the Londoners before the fierce attack of Prince Edward. He was summoned [by Montfort) to Parliament 14 December 1264. After the battle of Evesham (4 August 1265) his lands were forfeited for rebellion, but he soon made his peace. In January 1277 he was going to Wales on the King's service, and was in the Marches in the following May. He was summoned for military service against the Welsh again in 1282 and 1283, and 28 June 1283 to the "parliament" at Shrewsbury. He married Ellen whose parentage is unknown. He.died before 5 June 1284, when the writs to the escheators issued. His widow was living in 1316.
