Baltimore City Nineteenth-Century Photos

Justus Stehl ?

CDV possibly of Justus Stehl

This Carte-de-Visite was made in the Baltimore Photo Studio of
O. Hallwig and Company at 20 North Charles Street. Mr. Hallwig
was in business at that address only between 1868 and 1870, which
provides a reasonably secure date for this image.

Now, who is this fellow?

His photo was found with three others in an antiques store in
Barcelona, Spain. Matthew Hovious, a genealogist and collector
rescued all of these photos. Two have been identified as sons of Justus Stehl.
Those photos were made in the 1890s and can be seen here.

We don't really know who the gentleman is pictured above, but I am guessing
that he is the father of the Stehl boys, Justus Stehl a German-born
pharmacist in 19th-century Baltimore City. For more info,
see Nancy Bramucci's Medical Care in the City of Baltimore

How did this collection of interesting images get to Barcelona? That's unknown, however
Mrs. Stehl was British-born. It is speculated that she may have sent photos to her
family in Britain. Just how they made it to the southern realms of Europe is a story
waiting to be uncovered.
