Notes on Jacob Muller and Family, Early Settlers from Ullina, on the Smeaton Plains, Victoria

1. Information on the Muller Family from family members and websites

In 1980, Gertie Wolfenden (the niece of Mary HUDSON/MULLER) provided me with the first list of descendants of Henry Conrad and Mary MULLER and she also provided a little information on lives and occupations of the children, including a few names of spouses and children. At about the same time, Robert Stanley (Stan) Hudson, a descendant of Agnes Hudson (the sister of Mary HUDSON/MULLER), provided some information on the line from Ruby Jane MULLER and husband Duncan James FRASER, which I was able to follow-up in the 1980's  through their Canberra-based son, Ian Bruce FRASER. Little progress was made on the MULLER family for the next twenty years, until in June 2007 I received an email from Kenneth and Loretta MULLER, informing me they had visited this website and had further information on the MULLER family in general and their line in particular. This contact stimulated me into reviewing all the information I had  gathered (but not always added to the website) and undertaking some further research on the MULLER family. A summary of this information is given below.

2. Websites referring to members of the Muller Family

A Google search for members of the family of Jacob MULLER  from Smeaton located four websites. The first of these sites refers to the line from Jacob and Anna Elise MULLER via Henry Conrad and Mary MULLER to Mary Victoria MULLER and James DEASON.  The site "DEASON FAMILY HISTORY" http://www.comp.utas.edu.au/users/rsmith/scilly/deason/wc_toc.html was created by Rick Smith and was last updated on 19 June 2007. It includes information on the line from "Mary Elizabeth (Vicki) MULLER (1902-~1980)" m James DEASON, and their four children. Note: In my compilation, I refer to "Mary Elizabeth (Vicki) MULLER" as Mary Victoria MULLER as she is recorded as Mary Vic MULLER in the birth record (29447) and Mary Victoria MULLER in the death record (26997).

The second, third and fourth sites trace family members from Jacob and Anna Elise MULLER via Eliza Clara MULLER and John Patrick MARSHALL. One of these was located some years ago at the address http://genealogy.bowen.ws/search.php?mylastname=Muller&myfirstname=&mybool=AND&search=Search. I have a record the part of the site that contained information on the five children of Eliza Clara MULLER and John Patrick MARSHALL. The site seems to be inactive at present (July 2007).The next site http://www.bowen.ws/Genealogy/pedigree.php?personID=I1236&tree=Bowen contains a "Pedigree for Rebecca McKay" and provides a list of descendants from George McKAY and Doris MARSHALL (eldest child of Eliza Clara MULLER and John Patrick MARSHALL). The final site "The Family of Lois Willis" http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~loiswillis/Individuals/i150.htm also includes some information on the children of  Eliza Clara MULLER and John Patrick MARSHALL.

3. Records of the Muller Family at Ullina

John Graham in his book "Early Creswick" gives details of land sales in the Creswick and Smeaton Districts, and lists some of the early settlers, including a J. Muller. Maps of land holdings in the district in the late 1800's indicate that a J. Muller owned three properties located about 1 km to the north of the townsite of Ullina (see photograph of portion of map of landholdings drawn about 1884). The properties, with areas of about 42, 20 and 18 acres adjoined those owned by members of the Askew and Pringle families. Over the decades, all three families eventually became linked through marriage.In 1903, there were nine members of the Muller family listed on the electoral roll for the Ullina Polling Place, Division of Laanecoorie, Clunes District. In alphabetical order, those Mullers registered to vote were:  Annie (home duties), Carl (farmer), Elizabeth (home duties, Elizabeth junior (home duties), Henry Conrad (creamery manager), Jacob (farmer), Jacob junior (farmer), Maggie (home duties) and Mary (home duties).

4. Muller Gravestones at Smeaton Cemetery

At Smeaton Cemetery, at least four gravestones have been erected as tributes to members of the Muller family. Inscriptions from these gravestones are given below:

5. Records of Muller Family Members in the Indexes of Victorian Births, Marriages and Deaths

Indexes of Victorian births, marriages and deaths are available on CD for the period from the mid 1800's through the early 1900's, and for death records until 1985. Searches of  the records for Jacob MULLER, his wife Anna Elisa SCHMIDT, and their possible descendants, were undertaken at the Alexander Library in Perth, Western Australia. As always, variations in the original spelling of names, and possible errors in the transcription from the handwritten entries gives room for some doubt in the accuracy of the search results, but I believe the following summary provides a reasonable base for further study.

5. Working List of Descendants of Jacob Muller and Anna Elise Schmidt

The following list of descendants includes information from many of the sources acknowledged above, and is intended only as a working draft to be refined as additional information becomes available. However, I believe it does demonstrate the important contribution that settlers like Jacob Muller and Anna Elise Schmidt made to the development of rural districts in Victoria, and to the future population of Australia. Descendants of these pioneers are now distributed throughout the states and territories of "the wide brown land".
