He enlisted in the Confederate forces as a substitute for David A. Browder TN:MonroeCo. He was a private in 2nd TN:Cavalry (Ashby's unit)Co.,G at Evans Fort TN. He was wonded in the arm shortly after Dec. 1862 but recovered. On April 10, 1864 he took part in the battle at McLean's Gap, GA and was captured @ Tunnel Hill, GA. On April 19, 1864 he was transported to a military prison in Louisville,KY via Nashville,TN and finally arrived at the Federal Prison Camp Morton in Indianapolis, IND on April 22, 1864. He remained a prisoner until May 20, 1865 when he was released upon takeing an Oath of Allegiance to United States. Cyril Durham enlisted as a private in the Confederate forces on July 11, 1862 in the 2nd TN Calvary (Ashby's Unit) , Co. G at Evan's Ford, Tennessee. He was a substitute for David A. Browder of Monroe Co., Tennessee. He was 55 years old when he enlisted. He stated that he had a light complexion, gray hair, blue eyes, and was 5 feet 11.5 inches tall.

According to his muster roll, Cyril was shot by a bushwhacker on September 27, 1862 in Manchester, Kentucky. He was wounded by a gunshot in the arm and had his horse and a navy pistol taken from him. After he recovered from his injuries, he fought at McLeans Gap, GA, and was captured at Tunnel Hill, GA on April 10, 1864. On April 19, 1864 he was transported to the military prison in Louisville, KY via Nashville, TN and finally arrived at the Federal prison, Camp Morton, located in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 22, 1864. He remained a Prisoner-of-war until May 20, 1865 when he was released upon taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. He returned to Sweetwater, Monroe Co., Tennessee where his wife and family had moved to during the war. They later moved back to Bledsoe Co., Tennessee, where he lived until his death in 1877.

2nd (Ashby's) Cavalry Regiment was formed by consolidating the 4th and 5th Battalions of Tennessee Cavalry in May, 1862. The men were from the counties of Hamilton, Monroe, Knox, Union, Claiborne, Hawkins, Jefferson, Bledsoe, Bradley, Polk, Hancock, Blount, and Sullivan. It was assigned to Wharton's, Pegram's, J.S. Scott's, Davidson's, Humes', and H.M. Ashby's Brigade. The regiment participated in the conflicts at Cumberland Gap, Murfreesborough, and Chickamauga, then was involved in the Atlanta Campaign. Later it skirmished in Alabama, aided in the defense of Savannah, and took part in the campaign of the Carolinas. It lost 6 killed, 8 wounded, and 19 missing at Cumberland Gap, and reported 19 casualties at Chickamauga. Only a few surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. The field officers were Colonel Henry M. Ashby, Lieutenant Colonels Henry C. Gillespie and John H. Kuhn, and Majors Pharaoh A. Cobb and William M. Smith.

To all to whom these presents shall come Greeting,
Know ye that in consideration of an Entry made in the office of the Entry Taker of Cannon County pursuant to an Act of the General Assembly of said State passed on the ninth day of January 1830, and entered on the 19th day of April 1837, by No. 183.

There is granted by the said State of Tennessee unto Cyrel Durham a certain tract or parcel of land containing five hundred acres by Survey bearing date the 31st day of November 1841. Lying in said county on the waters of the Clear fork of Smiths' fork and bounded as follows to wit. Beginning on a small black locust the South East corner of a 500 acre tract in the name of Peter Adams, thence South 49 poles to a stake on Phillips' line, thence West with his line 168 poles to a stake his North West corner, then South with his line 351 poles to a stake on Milton's line, then West with his line 178 poles to a stake on the line of a 640 acre tract in the mane of Ancel Milton, thence North with his line 400 poles to a beech on Cummings and Adams' line, thence East with their line 114 poles to a poplar Adams' corner, thence North with his line 22 poles to Adams' North West corner, thence East with his line 72 poles to an elm Adams' corner, thence South 22 poles to a chestnut oak Adams' corner, thence East with his line 160 poles to the Beginning.

With the hereditaments and appurturamy, To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with its appurtuances to the said Cyrel Durham and his heirs forever. In witness whereof Aaron V. Brown, Governor of the State of Tennessee hath hereunto set his hand and carved the great Seal of the State to be applied at Nashville on the tenth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty six and of the Independence of the United States the Seventy first.
