"Alice Hookings (Hawkins) was born in England. About age 19, she married Benjamin Stratton, who was 20 years her senior. They had one son before Benjamin's death in 1627. Alice and her son then migrated to the new Virginia colony. About 1628, Alice married Mr. Chilcott. His first name is not known for certain, but the only Chilcott in early Virginia records is Thomas Chilcott who arrived in the colony prior to 1635. Alice and Mr. Chilcott had only one daughter before his death between 1629 and 1636. Alice was a widow for the second time while under the age of 30."
"In January 1637, Alice Bagwell petitioned the Court for 200 acres due to her for transportation of herself, her son Thomas Stratton, and 2 servants John Waltham and John Crowder. At the same court, she then gave 100 acres to her son Thomas Stratton (about age 12) and her daughter Mary Chilcott (about age 8). She probably gave this land to her children because she had recently married Henry Bagwell and wanted to give her children from her previous marriages some inheritance free from their new stepfather. (Meyer, 81) The tract that she was granted is numbered N22 in Whitelaw's study of the Eastern Shore. (Whitelaw, 127)"
"Henry Bagwell was 16 years older than Alice. He was well established and would have raised her two children. Alice and Henry had 3 children of their own. In 1639, Bagwell had a patent recorded for 400 acres in N19 (Whitelaw). He served as the executor of the will and estate of Alice's mother. Bagwell did not leave a will, but his son John received his father's land in 1663 when he gave half to his brother Thomas."
"It is not known when Alice died, but her life and the lives of her husbands are adventures in courage and stamina that founded the new nation."
