The four ancestral lines of this family are:
The surname Angus came to England from Scotland where it is a common name, but its earliest origins are Irish. The name Angus is the English form of the old Gaelic name Aonghus, which is pronounced something like "oenish". The name Aonghus is of very ancient origin and has its roots in early Irish mythology as one of the most ancient names of the Celts. Aonghus possibly means "one strength" or "strong one" and may be derived from the Irish óen meaning "one" and gus meaning "force, strength, or energy". The Irish god named Aonghus (sometimes known as Aonghus Mac Og, meaning "Angus the young son") was the Irish god of love and youth. The name was also borne by an 8th-century Pictish (ancient Scottish) king and several Irish kings. In early mediaeval times a Saint Aonghus travelled from Iona to Perthshire and is credited with bringing Celtic (Irish) Christianity to Scotland. The surname Angus is a patronymic surname, in other words Angus was originally a first name long before surnames came into existence. It became a surname meaning "son of Angus". Synonymous surnames include Mac/McAngus or Angusson. The surnames MacNeish, MacNish and MacInnes are variations on MacAonghus.
Many ancient Scottish families would have chosen to name their children Aonghus and many of their first names would have evolved into later surnames, so the surname Angus certainly has multiple geographic origins. Thus it would be a mistake to say that our family is descended from any of the ancient Aonghuses named above. Nor can we conclude that we are necessarily related to any others with the surname Angus.
As Angus is also a place name in Scotland it is also probable that the surname Angus has geographic roots with families from the County of Angus choosing to adopt Angus as their surname and having no relation to any patronymic Anguses. Thus the surname Angus could also derive from an ancestor who came from the County of Angus.

Our Angus ancestors came from Lancaster, Lancashire, England, before
immigrating to Canada in the early 20th century. They had lived in
Lancaster for about 200 years prior to emigrating. From the earliest records our
Anguses worked as sawyers or carpenters. The trade was passed from father to son
from the early 18th century until the late 20th century. Although our earliest
recorded ancestor lived in Lancashire and the family continued to live in
Lancashire until the early 20th century, family tradition always maintained that
our family roots were in Scotland. We have no documentary evidence to confirm
this tradition, but circumstantial evidence definitely supports it. Firstly,
Angus is not an English surname. It is, without a doubt, a Scottish surname (or
possibly Irish). Our earliest documented ancestor is William Angus who is found
in the district of Over-Wyresdale, just south of Lancaster, when he married
there and began having children there in 1724. There is no record of William's
birth and his family is the only family surnamed Angus anywhere in the vicinity
of Lancaster (and possibly within all of Lancashire) until the turn of the 19th
century. Such a situation strongly suggests that William was born outside of
Lancashire and that he immigrated. Whether he immigrated as a child, youth, or
young adult is impossible to say, but one would expect that if he came to
Lancashire with his birth family then we'd find records of siblings or their
descendants with the surname Angus in Lancashire (unless he had only sisters.)
Also the earliest records of the family give their surname spelled Anghurst
which I suggest represents a phonetic rendering of how they actually pronounced
their name. Such a pronunciation rings very Scottish. Indeed, if one were to
imagine Sean Connery saying the name "Angus" it would sound much like "Anghurst."
The surname spelling then shifts a generation later to Angious, which I suggest
represents a softening of the earlier Scottish pronunciation and a progressive
Anglicizing of the name. It is not until the mid-19th century that we see the
Anglo spelling of "Angus" become consistent. Each of these earlier spellings
also strongly resemble the two most common Gaelic spellings of the name, Aonghas
or Anghais, giving further support to the suggestion of a Scottish origin for
our family. As such, it is suggested below that William Angus/Anghurst was
probably born in Scotland, however, given the commonness of his name it is
impossible to do more than speculate at possible candidate births.
When the paper trail runs cold, as it appears to have done with our Angus family, then the next step available to the genealogist is DNA research. As genetic origins can only be tested on the Y-chromosome it requires a male test subject who has an unbroken male Angus ancestry within our family. Fortunately such a subject exists and he is willing to have his DNA tested. It is our hope that the results of his test will produce a match with a family with documented Scottish roots. This will be our best possible lead to determine the origin of our Angus family. We presently await the results of the test.

Lancaster comes from the Latin castrum ("camp") on the Lune River, thus "Lunecastrum". Lancaster Castle was built at the lowest crossing point of the River Lune, and was a key English fortification against the Scots in the many wars between England and Scotland. The county of Lancashire derives its name from "Lancaster Shire".
Lancaster was a major seaport, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries, dealing largely with the import of coal from the big coalfields of West Lothian in Scotland, and to a lesser extent timber, to fuel the great industrial cotton towns of Lancashire and, particularly, Manchester, which was the heart of the industrial revolution. The coal boats went continually backwards and forward from Bo'ness/Carriden (the same town) and Alloa in Clackmannanshire on the Firth of Forth to Lancaster - obviously taking with them Scottish sailors from that area.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, coal, and the Industrial Revolution transformed the economy of Lancashire, rising to a golden age of industrial technology, only to crash in the Lancashire cotton famine of the early 1860s, which left families across the county destitute and forced into an existence of poverty. Much of the cotton for the Lancashire cotton mills came from the southern United States. The cotton industry in Lancashire was already in a state of over-production when the American Civil War broke out and cotton shipments from the USA ceased. Many of the cotton mills shut down. Widespread poverty ensued. Many people emigrated, while others moved to Yorkshire to work in the wool industry.
Throughout the 18th century, there was a huge influx of population as people abandoned agriculture for a new urban way of life in back-to-back terraced houses often provided for them by mill owners who wanted a workforce close at hand. The social consequences of this change were enormous. There was a great fear that so many people, concentrated so closely together for the first time in history, would give rise to anarchy and mob rule. The great public works of the day such as art galleries and parks often referred to as Victorian philanthropy frequently hid a more practical reason to civilize the mass of population and help maintain order.
Social conditions were deplorable. Healthcare as we understand it was non-existent. Open sewers were commonplace and disease was widespread. These conditions gave rise to much of the legislation we have today on public order, sanitation and building regulations.
This is Lancaster as our Angus family lived it.

William ANGUS/ANGHURST b: ABT 1700 in Scotland? William married on 13 APR 1724 in St. Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England to Mary LEAH, whose origins are unknown.
William Angus is the earliest identified ancestor of our Angus family. The earliest record we have for him is his marriage in 1724 in the parish of St. Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, followed by the baptisms of his children beginning in 1724 in the chapelry of Over-Wyresdale which is located about 15 km south of Lancaster, but is within the bounds of the parish of St. Mary. Thus, it is most likely that William and Mary were residing in Over-Wyresdale when they were married in St. Mary, Lancaster.
We have no record of William's date or place of birth, however it is suggested that he was most likely born in Scotland and that he was the first of this family to reside in England.
Our Lancashire Anguses have now been traced back to the early 18th century family of William Angus and Mary Leah, whose children were baptized at Over-Wyresdale, a chapel within the bounds of the parish of Lancashire.
William and Mary represent the earliest known family of Anguses in the entire county of Lancashire. No earlier birth or marriage records for anyone of the surname Angus have so far been located within the Lancaster area. Thus this could be the earliest family of the surname Angus to have resided in Lancashire. No birth record has been found for William in Lancashire, nor anywhere in northern England either. As Angus is a Gaelic surname and as family tradition claims that our Anguses were originally Scottish, it is suggested that William may have been born in Scotland.
William Angus married Mary Leah on 13 APR 1724 in the parish of St. Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England. They had the following children:
The baptism records for the chapelry of Over Wyresdale begin in 1723. The earliest record of the name ANGUS in the parish record is the baptism of Jane Angus, daughter of William and Mary, in 1724. ALL but two Angus registrations in Over Wyresdale can be traced to this family. And these remaining two appear likely to belong to this family, but cannot be positively identified as yet. Thus this Angus family appears to have been the only family surnamed Angus within the bounds of the chapelry of Over Wyresdale.
The earliest transcribed records in St. Mary begin with marriages in 1760, burials in 1786 and baptisms in 1810
The earliest and only ANGUS (Anghurst) burial in Over Wyresdale is Margaret Anghurst, infant daughter of William and Mary, buried 1735 in Over Wyresdale. There are no other Angus burials in Over Wyresdale.
Thomas Angus moved from Over Wyresdale to Quernmore (approximately 10 km)
Thomas ANGUS b: ABT 20 NOV 1737 in Over Wyresdale, Lancaster, Lancashire, England as the son of William Angus and Mary Leah, shown above. At some point prior to the birth of his first child, Thomas moved from Over Wyresdale to Quernmore -- a distance of about 10 km. Thomas married on 25 MAY 1765 in the parish of Saint Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England to Jane BLEAZARD, b: ABT 04 SEP 1743 in Quernmore, Caton, Lancashire, England, as the daughter of Robert Bleazard. Over Wyresdale and Quernmore both lie within the bounds of St. Mary's parish, so it is not unexpected to find their marriage in the records of the parish seat, rather than the chapelry where they resided. The fact that Thomas' wife, Jane, lived in Quernmore may provide the reason for his move there. Thomas is described in parish records as being employed as a husbandman (someone who looks after animals). Thomas and Jane had the following children, shown below. Thomas and Jane are both buried in St. Paul's churchyard, Caton, Lancashire, England.
*NOTE: Where births below are shown to have taken place in "St. Mary, Lancaster" this means that the baptism is recorded in the parish of St. Mary and the birth occurred within the bounds of the parish, but the exact location in the parish is not known. It is most likely that all the first generation births took place in Quernmore in Caton.
It is believed that Mary Angus later married on 7 JUL 1792 in Saint Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England to William BRADLEY b: ABT 1765 in England. She is recorded as a spinster in Quarmore (Quenrmore), Lancaster, Lancashire, England and William was a widower. He may have had children from his previous marriage -- this have not been researched. The following children may be theirs:
Elizabeth Angus was baptised in Anwoth, Kirkcubright, Scotland while the
rest of her family was baptised in Lancaster.

Lancaster, Lancashire, England
William ANGUS/ANGIOUS b: ABT 30 MAY 1773 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England as a son of Thomas Angus and Jane Bleazard, shown above. St. Mary's parish records frequently show William's surname spelled ANGIOUS (along with most other members of this family). William Angus married on 23 NOV 1805 in St. Luke, Lowick, Lancashire, England to Ann THRELKELD b: 1782 in England. William was employed as a husbandman at the time of their marriage. William moved to Skerton in Lancaster on the north side of the river. (See map.)
Our William and Ann had the following children:
After the premature death of William's first wife, Ann, he married secondly on 17 APR 1829 in St. Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England to Jane PRICE b: 1778 in England. They had no known children.
James ANGUS/ANGIOUS was born 1 NOV 1810 in Skerton, Lancashire, England as the son of William and Ann Angus (shown above). James worked as a sawyer. He married on 21 SEP 1828 in Cockerham, Lancashire, England to Jane PRESTON. Cockerham is located north of the city of Lancaster. In 1841 and 1851 James was residing at #4 Palisades in Lancaster with his wife and children, and employed as a sawyer. His place of birth is given in 1851 as Skerton, Lancashire. In 1861 James was residing at Ovenhouse Yard (near 40 Bridge Lane) in Castle, Lancaster, Lancashire, England, as a sawyer, with his wife, son James, and granddaughter, Mary J Sharples, b 1856 in Preston, Lancashire. Jane is shown in the 1881 census at age 74 as a widowed pauper living in a union workhouse, working as a cotton weaver. James Angus and Jane Preston had the following children:
John ANGUS/ANGIOUS b: 25 AUG 1831 in St. Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire,
England. John followed in his father's trade as a sawyer. He married
ABT 1855 in Lancashire, England to Sarah ROBERTS. Their story continues below.
Edward is believed to have married secondly BET 1868-1871 to Mary Ann whose maiden name is unknown. She was b: 1842 in Scotforth, Lancashire, England. They had the following children:
John ANGUS/ANGIOUS was born 25 AUG 1831 in St. Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England as the son of James Angus and Jane Preston (shown above). His baptism is recorded under the name "John Angious." John married on 23 JUN 1855 St Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England to Sarah ROBERTS. Sarah was born ABT 11 AUG 1833 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England as the daughter of Thomas and Mary Roberts also of Lancaster, Lancashire. Like his father and grandfather before him, John worked as a sawyer in the industrial city of Lancaster, Lancashire. John and Sarah had twelve children most of whom went into similar fields of industrial employment, either in the lumber, steel, or cotton industries.
Sarah Roberts had the following son from a previous relationship:
The children of John Angus and Sarah Roberts were:
Mary Magdalen Angus is believed to have married ABT JUN 1882 in Preston, Lancashire, England to John BATEMAN, however this marriage is unverified. Mary is not found in the 1891/1901 census for England so it is assumed that she either died or emigrated.
Albert Angus married secondly on 12 JUN 1928 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to Doris CALVERT, b: 9 APR 1899 in Gunnerside, Yorkshire, England. They had the following children and later moved to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Thomas Robert ANGUS was born 11 NOV 1875 in St. George's Quay, Castle, Lancaster, Lancashire, England as a son of John Angus and Sarah Roberts (shown above). He went by "Robert". He married ABT JUN 1895 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England to Judith DOBSON. She was born ABT 22 OCT 1876 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England as the daughter of John Preston Dobson and Alice Wilkinson. Their information can be found on the Dobson Family Page.. Robert immigrated about 1919 to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada with his wife and adult children. It is not known why the family moved from Lancaster to Hamilton, but it is likely that it was with hopes of better prospects for industrial employment. All three of the Angus children married and settled in the Hamilton area however their descendants have since lost contact with each other. Judith died young, so her living grandchildren have very little memory of her. Thomas was the fourth consecutive generation of his family to work as a sawyer. What is known of "Robert" Angus and Judith Dobson had three children:
Front: Rose Angus (nee Allan) and Tom W. Angus
Rear: unknown
Jack & Jessie ANGUS
John "Jack" ANGUS was born 19 MAY 1898 on Norfolk Street in Lancaster, Lancashire, England as a son of Thomas Robert Angus and Judith Dobson (shown above). Jack immigrated about 1918 to Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada with his birth family. Jack was a fifth-generation sawyer and worked as a yard foreman with Lawson Lumber in Hamilton. Jack Angus married on 18 MAR 1921 in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario to Jessie Brown DUNCAN. Jessie was born 31 AUG 1902 in Glasgow, Scotland to a similar industrial working class family. It is not known how John and Jessie met. Jessie's family history is presented on the Duncan Family Page. Jack and Jessie had the following children:

These last two illegitimate baptisms represent the latest records of anyone surnamed ANGUS in the chapelry of Over Wyresdale, which records continue well into the 19th century. This would indicate that our Angus family had moved away from Over Wyresdale by the mid-late 18th century. After this point the family appears in the register of the chapelry of Quernmore in Caton. St. Mary in the city of Lancaster, so it would appear they moved into the city of Lancaster by the mid-late 18th century.
There are two dozen potential matches for Scottish births for William. Noteworthy among these are the following:
Whether either of these is our William will have to be determined by future research. However they do represent two of many plausible explanations for the arrival of our Angus family into Lancashire.
1861 "Border" (sic - Boarder) E. ANGUS, b 1782 in Lancaster, England, boarding with John Tafford and family in St. Thomas, Lancaster.
Betsey/Elizabeth ANGUS, bap 14 FEB 1810 in Anwoth, Kirkcudbright, Scotland is the only Angus baptism in the parish between 1727-1820.
Earliest ANGUS burial in St. Mary parish, Lancaster is 1825, belonging to this family.

= This person has known descendants.
ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:
Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855", then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her exact date of birth is unknown.
Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth registrations for the quarter ending with that month. Thus the person's birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise birth record.
Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime around 1855.
