Welcome to the Dawson family page of my family history website. This page covers the family of my wife's grandmother, Linda Winifred Tasker's grandmother, Annie Dawson. The Dawson family were rural farm hands and mine workers from Allendale, Northumberland, England where their ancestry can be traced back to the mid-17th century.
Please Note: This page is intended only as a narrative historical overview of this family. There is additional detailed information available for almost ever person presented on this page. To avoid the unnecessary work of double-entering such things as vital statistics, the additional information can be found in the accompanying GEDCOM database. Please make sure you click on the INDEX button at the bottom of the page so you don't miss out on potentially valuable additional information.
The research presented on this page is not mine alone. It contains information submitted by all the Fellow Researchers listed below. I am indebted to them for their generous contributions, but especially to John Walsh who has generously contributed a substantial amount of information to this page. This page is intended as a place for researchers to freely and cooperatively share our research with each other. It would be too cumbersome a task to reference each piece of data as to which researcher it has come from. The information shown on this page should be understood as a product of ALL of the Fellow Researchers. I am merely the editor and not the sole author. - Ryk
The surname Dawson has two suggested origins. The first and more likely is a contraction of Davidson or Davison, based on the forename "Daw", a nickname form of "David". Thus, Dawson means "son of David". Therefore the surname is most likely a patronymic and probably has multiple origins. Dawson is also claimed by some researchers to be a corruption of the Norman French D'Ossone, from the town of Ossone, in Normandy. Most authorities prefer the former etymology although it is quite possible that both are true, as the name certainly has more than one geographic origin.

Frances Bell said that her mother, Annie Dawson, was born on a farm called Whitley Shield, only a few miles from Hexham Abbey. She brought a picture of the farm with her to Canada (at right). Family records refer to the name as "Whitley Shield". It seems to be an ancient farm which can be found on ordnance survey maps as far back as the John Speed's map of 1610. It can be found with various spellings: Whitely, Whitley, Whiteley, Whitelee and White Shields. It is located in the parish of Allendale about 7 miles southwest of the village of Allendale and just north of Carr Shield. Allendale is located about 12 miles southwest of Hexham and about 5 miles west of Whitley Chapel.
Following a visit from John Wesley (1703-1791) himself, the Allendale area became strongly supportive of Wesley's Methodism and in 1857 Whitely Shield became the sight of a Primitive Methodist Church. It appears that the Whiteley Shield farm was part of the estate of the Blackett-Beaumont family who owned the mineral rights to most of the Allendale valley through the 18th century.
The 1839 tithe award records indicate "Thomas Dawson and others" as occupants of Whitely Shield, then owned by George Crawhall. This would be Thomas Dawson of Branch 2, b: 1818, son of Hugh Dawson and Elizabeth Graham. The farm is recorded as 78 acres and the tithe-rent was 4 pounds.
Although the descendants of the Dawsons remember Hexham Abbey as the significant local landmark they also lived only about 15 miles south of another very significant historical landmark, Hadrian's Wall.
Hadrian's Wall
Hadrian's Wall is an impressive archaeological remnant, nearly 2000 years old, from the time when England (then known as Britannia) was a province of the Roman Empire. The Wall was built by order of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, around AD 122. For six years professional soldiers built a wall 80 Roman miles long (about 120kms), from Wallsend-on-Tyne in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west. Hadrian wanted to mark the northern boundary of his Empire and to protect the "civilized" Empire from the Celtic "barbarians" to the north.
The earliest suggested ancestor of our Dawson family is John Dawson in Allendale, shown immediately below. The first two generations of this family are based on IGI data and should be considered as unverified. The first generation is quite speculative, whereas the second generation is more likely reliable. However truly reliable data does not begin until the third generation of Abraham Dawson, below.
John DAWSON was born ABT 1650 in England. He may be the John Dawson who married in 1681 in Hexham, Northumberland, England to Annam KEENLISIDE b: ABT 1660 in England. However, the marriage, wife, and children shown here for this John are speculative and based solely on IGI matches. They are unverified. It is suggested that they may have been the parents of:
John DAWSON was born ABT 20 JAN 1682/83 in Allendale, Northumberland, England,
shown above as a son of John Dawson, possible mother, Annam Keenliside. Firmer evidence begins with this John DAWSON who may have married on 7 FEB
1696/97 in Hexham, Northumberland, England to
Ann BAXTER b: ABT 1680 in England, however this marriage is unverified.
In 1708, John is listed as a Warden of St. Cuthbert's Church, Allendale Parish,
Northumberland, England. He is listed as residing at Woodhead, Allendale.
John Dawson is known to be the father of:
It is suggested that Whitfield Dawson married secondly on 2 JUL 1768 in Saint John, Garrigill, Cumberland, England, and that they had the following children:
Abraham DAWSON was born ABT 11 DEC 1707 in Far Hope, Allendale, Northumberland, England, shown above as a son of John Dawson and possibly Ann Baxter. He was a yeoman farmer. (He owned and worked his own land, but was not considered landed gentry.) He lived at High Close and/or High Hope farm (it is unclear if these are two different farms or two different names for the same farm), and later he lived in the village of Allendale itself. He married firstly on 2 MAY 1732 in St. Cuthbert's, Allendale, Northumberland, England to Ann BOUTFLOWER b: ABT 1710 in England, with whom he had the following children:
There are no known descendants from these children. Ann Bouthflower died in 1742 after which Abraham married secondly on 25 OCT 1744 in St. Cuthbert's, Allendale, Northumberland, England to Jane ROBINSON b: ABT 5 JAN 1714/15 in Allendale, Northumberland, England. They had the following children:

Elizabeth Armstrong-nee-Dawson (b1849), her son Joseph Armstrong, his
third wife, Jessie Armstrong-nee-Scott, and their children: Gordon, Simpson,
and Gwendolyn. Probably taken in Vancouver, ca. 1920.
Thanks to Brian Alexson for identifying the photo.
Joseph Armstrong immigrated to British Columbia, Canada where he married secondly on 10 OCT 1910 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to Charlotte WALTON b: SEP 1873 in Westgate, Weardale, Durham, England. She died a year later and Joseph married thirdly on 23 JUL 1914 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to Jessie SCOTT, b: 23 NOV 1880 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. They had the following children:
Samuel DAWSON 6 SEP 1858 in Whiteley Shield Farmstead, Near Carrshield, West Allendale,

sister Elizabeth and her family and working as a sailor. Samuel married 1
NOV 1884 in Bellingham, Wark on Tyne, Northumberland, England to
Jane Ann WALTON b: 1863 in Stanhope, Durham, England. At the time of
the wedding, she was living at Houxty Bankhead, which is where Annie Dawson's
husband, Luke Bell, was from. Luke Bell may have been a witness at their wedding
(the signature is hard to read - Walsh). Samuel was living at Copheaton at the
time. In 1891 Samuel was living in his own house with his own family just three
houses away from his sister Jane in Stanhope, Durham, England. In 1901 he was
living at Houxty Bankhead, Bellingham, Hexham, Northumberland, England, with his
wife and daughter, Louisa. A niece, Jane Dawson, age 17, is also found with
them. She is believed to be the daughter of Joseph Hetherington Dawson. Samuel
was working as a tailor and farmer. It should be noted that this is the same
farm that his brother-in-law, Luke Bell, had formerly lived and worked at.
Samuel was also living next to the Lee Hall farm, residence of
John Usher Bell.
In 1881, Samuel's brother, Abraham, also worked at Houxty
Bankhead. Samuel married ABT DEC 1884 in Bellingham, Northumberland, England
to
Jane Ann WALTON b: 1863 in Stanhope, Durham, England. They had the
following children:

the daughter of Ralph and Jane Nattrass. (c/o
Laurel Nattrass) In
1881 Abraham was working as an indoor farm labourer on the farm of
John Usher Bell in Leemailing, North Tyndale, Northumberland and Annie Nattrass was
working as a domestic servant for George Stephenson, a farmer at Swinhope House,
Stanhope, Durham, England. No relationship has
been shown between John Usher Bell and Luke Bell who married Annie Dawson
above, however the two farms of Leemailing and Houxty Bankhead are adjacent to
each other. Abraham and Annie Dawson immigrated to East Tilbury Township, Kent
County, Ontario Canada in 1886 where they raised the following family:
Of
the children of Joseph Dawson and Elizabeth Hetherington above it is noted that
at least four of them are known to have immigrated to Canada -- Thomas, Annie,
and Abraham to East Tilbury Township, Kent County, Ontario and Elizabeth to
British Columbia.
Many of the graves of the Canadian descendants can be found here: http://cemetery.canadagenweb.org/ON/ONS11767/index.html

= This person has known descendants.
ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:
Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855", then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her exact date of birth is unknown.
Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth registrations for the quarter ending with that month. Thus the person's birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise birth record.
Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime around 1855.
