The Origin of the Surname Harold

The surname Harold is an English patronymic surname and would most likely come from an early ancestor whose first name was Harold.

Behind the Name gives the etymology of the name Harold/Harald as: "leader of the army", derived from Old English here "army" and weald "leader, ruler". This was the name of five kings of Norway and two kings of England, including Harold II who lost the Battle of Hastings (and was killed in it), which led to the Norman Conquest. After the conquest it was rarely used but was eventually revived in the 19th century.

In some cases the surname Harold can be shown to be a phonetic corruption of Herald, which would be an occupational surname based on an ancestor who had been employed as a herald.

The Harrold Family in Northampton, England

File:EnglandNorthamptonshire.png
Northamptonshire, England

Our Harrold family has been traced back to the early 19th centry to the village of Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, England.  Hardingstone is just south of the city of Northampton and today is virtually engulfed by the city itself.

Hardingstone, Northampton is located about 20 miles east of Hellidon, Northampton where the Thornton family originated.  Three generations later, John Harrold's great-grandson, Lloyd Richardson married William Thornton's great-granddaughter, Winnifred Thornton.

Almost all post-1860 North American records for this family show the their surname spelled "Harold" with one 'r' while almost all pre-1860 North American records and almost all English records (regardless of date) show the surname spelled "Harrold" with two 'r's.  This spelling difference is probably inconsequential and likely represents different 19th century spelling conventions from the UK to Canada.

The Harrold Family from the Orkney Isles? No.

Family legend claims that John Harrold (b 1810, below) was a cattle drover from the Orkney Isles in Northern Scotland and that he migrated south to England before later immigrating to Canada.  However this tradition appears to be entirely false.

Census records verify that John Harrold came from Hardingstone, Northampton, England and that he and his probable father were both born in Hardingstone. Census records further imply that he had a broad extended family residing in Northampton suggesting that they had resided in Northampton for several generations.

Northampton parish records show occurrences of the surname Harrold going back to the late 16th century. And there is also a village named Harrold located about ten miles east of Hardingstone, suggesting that the surname was present in the area into antiquity. All of these factors strongly suggest that our Harrold family was domestic to Northampton and had resided there for hundreds of years and did not come from the Orkney Isles.

The Orkney tradition may have its basis in a corruption of the name of a town called Olney in nearby Buckinghamshire where some of the Harrolds below have been traced to.  Perhaps the name "Olney" became corrupted into Orkney as the tradition evolved.  The fact that John Harrold was an agricultural labourer could indicate that he handled cattle and from this could have evolved the tradition that he was a cattle drover.

A connected family legend claims that John Harrold's wife, Emma Brown, was the daughter of Benjamin Brown, a local sheriff.  This tradition also seems to have no basis in fact.  No birth record has been found for Emma Brown but there are several persons named Benjamin Brown in early census records who could be her father, none of whom is recorded as being a sheriff; almost all of them are agricultural labourers.  If this tradition is true then either Emma's father died before 1841 or he did not mention on the census that he was a sheriff.

Our study of the Harrold family begins with Samuel Harrold:

Samuel HARROLD b: 1781 in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, England.  Samuel's birth record has not been found.  His parents are unknown.  In 1841 Samuel is residing in "Under the Trees", Hardingstone, Northampton, England working as an agricultural labourer. In 1851 and 1861 Samuel and his wife are residing with their daughter Ann and family in Hardingstone. Samuel is shown as having been born in Hardingstone.

Samuel's relationship with his children as shown here is not confirmed (except for Ann). Ann is the only child for whom a baptismal record has been found, in which she is shown as the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Harrold. The rest of the children shown here are found in census records and parish records as all residing in Hardingstone. Furthermore they represent the only persons surnamed Harrold residing in the parish and they all fit chronologically into single family arrangement. Thus it is suggested, but not confirmed, that Samuel and Elizabeth were the parents of the following children.

Samuel is presumed to have married to a woman named Elizabeth b: 1782 in Great Houghton, Northamptonshire, England, although no record of their marriage has been found.  Her surname is unknown.  It is suggested that they had the following children, only one of whom is confirmed:

  1. Has Children Henry HARROLD b: ABT 1803 in Northampton, England.  Henry is not confirmed as a son of Samuel Harrold. (See Samuel's notes for more information). Henry is found in the Hardingstone parish records as having a wife Josefina and a daughter Elizabeth as shown here. They have not been found in any census records. Henry's birth date as shown here is purely a guess.  Henry is presumed to have married to a woman named JOSEFINA b: ABT 1803 in England, although no record of their marriage has been found.  Her surname is unknown.  They are recorded as having had the following child, after which they disappear from all records.  It is presumed they emigrated outside of the UK, Canada or the USA -- possibly to Australia.
    1. Has No Children Elizabeth HARROLD b: ABT 03 SEP 1825 in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, England.  She has not been found in any census record.
  2. Has No Children William HARROLD b: 1806 in Northampton, England.  William's relationship to his father Samuel is not confirmed. Hardingstone parish records show a small number of persons surnamed Harrold who all fit chronologically well into one family. Census records show these suggested family members all residing nearby to each other. And the male heads of household are all employed as agricultural labourers. Thus it is suggested, but not confirmed, that William is probably a son of Samuel Harrold as shown here.  In 1841 William was residing in "Centre of Village", Hardingstone, Northampton, England. He has not been found in 1851 or later.  William is mentioned in the following court notice: Northampton Division Petty Sessions -- William Harrold of Hardingstone was allowed to settle with Thomas Partridge for an assualt committed on him on the 23d May last (1843) at Great Houghton. http://www.northants-familytree.net/1843.html
  3. Has Children George HARROLD b: ABT 1807 in Northampton, England.  George is not confirmed as a son of Samuel Harrold. (See Samuel's notes for more information). George is found in the Hardingstone parish records as having a wife Mary and a daughter Hannah as shown here. They have not been found in any census records. George's birth date as shown here is purely a guess.  George is presumed to have married to a woman named MARY b: ABT 1807 although no record of their marriage has been found.  Her surname is unknown.  They are recorded as having had the following child after which they disappear from all records.  It is presumed they emigrated outside of the UK, Canada or the USA -- possibly to Australia.
    1. Has No Children Hannah HARROLD b: ABT 08 JAN 1832 in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, England.  She has not been found in any census records.
  4. Has Children John HARROLD b: 1810 in Northampton, England.
    1. Information on John Harrold and his descendants is presented below.
  5. Has Children Ann HARROLD b: 1829 in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, England.  Despite the enormous age gap between Ann and her siblings, parish and census records confirm that she was indeed a very late daughter for Samuel and Elizabeth. Ann's parents resided with Ann until their deaths. Ann.  Ann is presumed to have married to Thomas WARRICK b: 1825 in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, England although no record of their marriage has been found.  They had the following known children, however they have not been found in 1871 and later census records so it is possible that they could have had more children.  It is believed that they probably emigrated outside the UK, Canada or USA.
    1. Has No Children Clara WARRICK b: 1851 in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, England
    2. Has No Children Samuel Edward WARRICK b: 1853 in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, England
    3. Has No Children John William WARRICK b: 1856 in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, England
    4. Has No Children Rebecca WARRICK b: 1858 in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, England
    5. Has Children Pvt. Charles WARRICK b: 1860 in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, England.  Charles is the only member of this family to be found in any post-1861 census record.  In 1881 Charles was residing at the barracks in Caterham, Surrey, England where he was serving as a private in the Coldstream Guards.  Charles is presumed to have married to Sarah b: 1861 in Calme, Wiltshire, England although no record of their marriage has been found.  Her surname is unknown.  They had the following children:
      1. Has No Children Edith A WARRICK b: 1887 in Mitton, Buckinghamshire, England
      2. Has No Children Charles E S WARRICK b: 1888 in Hardingstone, Northumberland, England

John Harrold and Emma Brown

Has Children John HARROLD b: 1810 in Northampton, England, shown above as the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Harrold.  John is not confirmed as a son of Samuel Harrold. (See Samuel's notes for more information). John is found in 1841 residing in "Hallysyard", Hardingstone, Northampton, nearby to Samuel in "Under the Trees", Hardingstone. Samuel is just the right age to be John's father and there is no other family residing in the parish of Hardingstone with the surname of Harrold. Also, the fact that John named his eldest son Samuel further reinforces the likelihood that John is a son of the elder Samuel as shown here. However, this relationship remains unproven.

Family tradition among the grandchildren of John Harrold claims that John Harrold was a cattle drover from the Orkney Isles in Northern Scotland and that he immigrated to England before later immigrating to Canada. However this tradition appears to be entirely false.

Census records verify that John Harrold came from Hardingstone, Northampton, England and that he and his suggested father were both born in Hardingstone. Census records further imply that he had a broad extended family residing in Northampton suggesting that they had resided in Northampton for several generations. Northampton parish records show occurrences of the surname Harrold going back to the late 16th century. And there is also a village named Harrold located about ten miles east of Hardingstone, Northampton suggesting the surname was present in the area into antiquity. All of which strongly suggests that our Harrold family was domestic to Northampton and had resided there for hundreds of years and did not come from the Orkney Isles.

John is presumed to have married to Emma BROWN b: 1817 in Northampton, England, although no record of their marriage has been found.  Emma is said to be the daughter of Benjamin Brown, a local sheriff, however no evidence has been found to support this tradition and none of the Benjamin Browns who have been found in Northumberland were employed as a sheriff.  It is believed that this traditions is not correct.  John and Emma had the following children:

  1. Has No Children Mary Ann HAROLD b: ABT 08 DEC 1837 in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, England.  Mary Ann died as a child prior to 1841.
  2. Has Children Samuel HAROLD b: 10 FEB 1839 in Hardingstone, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England.  Samuel was married twice. Sadly, it would appear that both his wives died in childbirth. In 1891 Samuel was living next door to George Houlding, presumably is deceased wife's brother.  In 1881, a 63 year old Margaret Myers is residing with Samuel Harrold. She was born in Ontario of Irish descent.  She is presumed to be Samuel's mother-in-law.  Samuel is presumed to have married firstly ABT 1869 in Probably Brant County, Ontario to Jane MEYERS b: DEC 1842 in Ancaster, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, although no record of their marriage has been found.  They had the following children:
    1. Has No Children Arthur HAROLD b: 1870 in Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada
    2. Has No Children Martha HAROLD b: ABT 1872 in Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada.  Martha married on 24 JUN 1896 in Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada to Ezra Arthur MOTT b: 1869 in Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada.  It is believed that they moved to Manitoba.

    3. Has Children Hon. John HAROLD, MP b: 09 NOV 1873 in Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada.  John served as the Member of Parliament for Brantford.  John married on 02 JUL 1896 in Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada to Edith MCKEE b: 03 MAY 1873 in Chinguacousy, Peel County, Ontario, Canada, daughter of Alexander McKee and Susanna Herrin.  Edith's birth registration confirms her birth as 3 MAY 1873, which would maker her older than her husband. However, on all later documents she gives her date of birth as 1875 presumably to make herself appear younger than her husband.  John and Edith had the following children:
      1. Has No Children Edgar McKee HAROLD b: 01 MAR 1898 in Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada.  Edgar served in WWI.  He married on 02 JUL 1921 in Paris, Brant, Ontario, Canada to Doris Gertrude ROBINSON b: 1899 in Lachine, Qubec, Canada, daughter of Charles Bygale Robinson and Sophie Jane Frost.  It is not known if Edgar and Doris had any children.

      3. Has No Children James McMahon HAROLD b: 23 JUN 1909 in Paris, Brant County, Ontario, Canada.  James served in WWII.  He married a woman named Ann whose surname is unknown.  It is not known if they had any children.

    4. Has Children George Samuel HAROLD b: 14 OCT 1876 in Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada.  In 1933 George is recorded on a ship's passenger list as born in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, residing in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, departing from Southampton, England, and arriving in Canada. He may be the George Samuel Harold, born 1876, who died 22 Nov 1940 in Harrison Hot Springs, British Columbia, Canada.  George married on 02 JAN 1909 in Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada to Jennie ROBERTS b: FEB 1885 in St. Thomas, Elgin, Ontario, Canada, daughter of Walter Roberts and Sarah Hutchinson.  George and Jennie had the following known children and possibly more:
      1. Has No Children Margaret HAROLD b: AFT 1911 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada
      2. Has No Children Eleanor HAROLD b: AFT 1911 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada
    5. Has No Children Jane Catherine HAROLD b: 18 APR 1878 in Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada.  Jane was age 32, not married, and residing with her widowed father in 1911. It is presumed that she never married.

  3. Has Children Mary Ann HARROLD b: 1841 in Hardingstone, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England.  Mary Ann married on 25 FEB 1863 in Brantford Township, Brant County, Ontario, Canada to William KIRKBY b: 23 NOV 1829 in Aswardby, Lincoln, England, son of John and Mary Kirkby.  William Kirkby and Mary Ann Harold were both born in England and immigrated to Onandaga Township, Brant County, Ontario -- William in 1843 and Mary Ann in 1847. William was previously married to a woman named Elizabeth and had two children by her: Selina Kirkby in 1850 and William H. Kirkby in 1852.  William later marred Mary Ann Harold in Brant County, Ontario and moved up to Wingham, Huron North County by 1881 and later to London, Ontario. Legend

Has Children = This person has known descendants.

ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:

  1. Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855", then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her exact date of birth is unknown.

  2. Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth registrations for the quarter ending with that month.  Thus the person's birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise birth record.

  3. Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime around 1855.
