John Anthony Prangley
1938-2006
We wish to remember Tony Prangley. Tony died suddenly of a
heart attack while attending a football game near his home in Wales in February
2006. He was 67. Tony was one of the founding Fellow Researchers of this site.
He was a generous contributor and was one of the key individuals whose efforts
helped us to sort out the 17th century Prangleys in Corsley. He was a kind man
and his contributions to our group will be deeply missed.
Welcome to the Prangley family page of my family history website. This
page covers the known descendants
of the original Prangleys from Corsley, Wiltshire, England. As the
Prangley surname is one of those very few surnames that is believed to have a
unique origin then it is believed that all Prangleys are related to each other. In the course
of researching my own family's Prangley ancestors I have run across several
other researchers online. We have all found our common Prangley roots in the parish
of Corsley, Wiltshire, England, which is believed to be the place of origin for
the Prangley surname. I am attempting to catalogue the common origins of
the Prangley families from all over the world. So far we have found
descendant branches in England, Canada, the United States, Wales, Australia, New
Zealand, and South Africa.
This website will not follow all the descendants of the Prangleys all over the
world as that would become just too overwhelming. However, I will attempt to follow the various descendant lines of the original Corsley Prangleys
as far as the year 1900 (or so). So far we have been able to account for
nearly 90% of the Prangleys found in the Latter Day Saints' International
Genealogical Index and 1881 Census Transcriptions. If you wish to contribute your research please
contact me.
The information on this website is not mine alone, but represents the
combined research efforts of all the Fellow
Researchers listed at the bottom of this page.
Please Note: This page is intended only as a narrative historical overview
of this family. There is additional detailed information available
for almost ever person presented on this page. To avoid the unnecessary
work of double-entering some data, the additional
information can be found in the accompanying GEDCOM database. Please make
sure you click on the INDEX button at the bottom of the page so you don't miss
out on potentially valuable additional information.
If you are following the origins of the author's Canadian
Prangleys, you may find their information located below under
BRANCH #2. As this is not only the author's
family, but also the family of most of the Fellow Researchers, it is therefore
the most thoroughly researched and verified. All other branches are so far based solely on IGI data and represent
research "in progress".
A Variant of Prangnell
The surname Prangley appears to be of almost singular and unique origin from the
late-17th century in the area of the parish of Corsley, Wiltshire, England.
Almost all known Prangleys can trace their origins to the Corsley area.
Several attempts have been made to interpret the meaning of the surname based on
its current form: Prang + ley. However, until this project
began, nobody had seriously considered the idea that Prangley may not be the
original form of the name and that it may be a variant of another surname.
Evidence is mounting that Prangley is simply a dialectic variant of the
surname Prangnell -- a very ancient surname in southern England.
Even in the parish of Corsley, Wiltshire, itself (the purported original
location of the surname) the form Prangley does not come into existence
until the mid-18th century, with only one exception. We find the burial of
Gorge Prangly in 1688. Otherwise, 17th century parish records indicate the
surname was spelled variously as: Pranglin, Pranglen, Prangling, and Pranglyn.
It should be noted that all of these earlier variants contain a final "n" sound
(or "ng"). And even Gorge Prangly himself appears to have been the son of
a Gorge Pranglin and father of a Gorge Pranglyn.
This would suggest that the "ley" ending
is merely the phonetic rendering of a lazy dropping of the final "n" sound and
that "ley" is not an original element of the surname. We can show several
cases below where a person was baptized with one of these final-n-variants and
the same person appears in later records with the surname Prangley.
Thus we can observe that it is indeed a phonetic morphing of the same surname
and not simply two different, but similar, surnames.
Furthermore, we find the record of a Robert Prangenel cited in "Abstracts of the Inquisitiones
Post Mortem Relating to Wiltshire, Returned into the High Court of Chancery from
the Reign of King Henry 3rd" (1216-1272), for Wiltshire, England.
Here is evidence of a phonetically consistent surname as far back as the 13th
century.
The similarity between Prangenel and Prangnell
cannot be dismissed. When we look at the geographic distribution of these
surnames in the 18th and 19th centuries we can observe that Prangley is
found primarily in the area of Corsley and Frome, Wiltshire, whereas the surname
Prangnell is common in a near perfect ring around Corsley and Frome, but
almost entirely absent in the Corsley and Frome area. There are a few
exceptions, of course, where we find Prangleys residing outside of the Corsley/Frome
area, but most of those families can be traced back to Corsley or Frome in
earlier generations.
It seems hard to argue that the surname Prangley evolved
as a unique surname, independent of the surname Prangnell in an isolated
geographic area while completely surrounded by families of the name Prangnell,
and while Prangnell families utterly avoided settling in the Corlsey/Frome
area. It seems far more plausible that Prangley is merely a local
dialect variant of Prangnell where the final "l" and "n" sounds have
reversed.
We can now cite circumstantial evidence that appears to show the
use of the form Prangley and Prangnell in the same family.
Joseph Prangley (shown below) had a son Henry
Prangley who is shown in 1841 as Henry Prangenle residing with an elder Moses
Prangenle b ca 1805 (believed to be his uncle). Henry is found in 1851 as
Henry Prangley while Moses is found in 1851 as Moses Prangnell.
While not proven, this would appear to show the two surnames common within the
same extended family.
Modern scholars give the origin of the surname Prangnell
as "of ancient origins now lost to us, likely a geographic surname evolving from
an extinct village."
It had previously been suggested that the
Prangleys originated from an eponymous Germanic immigrant to the Corlsey area,
likely sometime in the16th century. However such a suggestion now seems
unrealistic. If Prangley is an evolved form of Pranglin (and
variants) which is itself just an evolved form of Prangnell, a surname
which can be found in southern England nearly as far back as William the
Conqueror then it would appear that the authentic Prangley roots are thoroughly
English and perhaps even Anglo-Saxon, and any etymologies that attempt to
interpret the surname using the final "ley" element would appear to be mistaken.
As a variant of Prangnell,
Prangley is probably also kindred with Pringle and Pringley.
Other Proposed Etymologies
Other suggestions for the origin of the surname include:
-
Prangley may come
from the Anglo-Saxon "pronged ley/leigh". Leigh means
"field". John Prangley of England wrote me with the following: "When I was at university in Bristol
in 1956, Dr. Basil Cottle, the author
of The Penguin Book of English Surnames taught me. In a class of 40 he was
able to tell the origin of every name but mine! He hazarded: 'a family
that lived in a prong-shaped field'.
Adding that he wasnt sure that the
surname had British origins, [and] the name doesnt appear in Dr. Cottle's book."
However, if "ley" is not an authentic final element of the surname then this
etymology must be rejected. And, according to this account, Dr. Cottle
himself acknowledges that he was merely guessing.
-
Roger Prangley of Germany sent along the following suggestion: "Prangley was
earlier probably a German "double-barreled" name. Prang is a name which stems
from North Germany. The meaning of it comes from the lower German (dialect)
word and means 'aggressor' or 'fighter'. The name of Prang is widely distributed
throughout German-speaking Europe. The 2nd name, Ley, stems possibly from Leyen
which means "slate" in Rheinish dialect and meant therefore "Slater" or it could
possibly be from Eley which in turn comes from the name Eligius and translated
meant "the chosen one". The surname Ley is also broadly distributed here. The
combination of the two names would also explain the uniqueness, possibly
only an immediate family at the time (our ancestors)." Again, this
etymology attempts to interpret the final "ley" element as original, whereas
it has been shown above, that "ley" is an 18th century variant.
-
Prangley may come from the word Perang, a woodcutting instrument.
(Suggested by Mr. Percy Prangley 1974). However, this would appear to be
just one person's guess.

Corsley is a small town in the county of Wiltshire in England.
Wiltshire is home to the infamous Stonehenge. Corsley is located near the
centre of the ancient kingdom of Wessex, in western Wiltshire only one mile from
the border of Somersetshire, halfway between Frome, Somerset and Warminster,
Wiltshire.
The population of Corsley in 1801 was 1400. It reached its highest in
1831 at 1729 and lowest in 1971 at only 650.
"At the making of Domesday Book most of Corsley was included within the great
royal manor of Warminster, and even after it had been granted away by Henry II
the church of Corsley was parochially dependent on Warminster until the 15th
century. (Footnote 1) The common fields of Cley and Chedlanger were shared by
the tenants of Corsley and Warminster until their inclosure in 1783.
"Corsley lay within the bounds of Selwood Forest in the Middle Ages, and much
of the parish must have consisted of woodland which was only gradually cleared.
This has left its mark on the pattern of settlement. Apart from the village of
Chapmanslade, the parish contains only small hamlets and isolated farms. Some of
the hamlets, such as Huntenhull, Corsley, and the three Whitbournes, are of
early origin, while Longhedge, Corsley Heath and Lane End are all groups of
cottages built on former common land, probably from the 16th century onwards.
In spite of this Corsley was clearly well populated in the 14th century.
In 1377 there were 128 poll-tax payers in Corsley, the third largest number in
the hundred, and 49 at Whitbourne. In the 16th century the parish was
apparently well-populated and prosperous. The population of 1,412 in 1801
increased to 1,729 by 1831, in spite of the emigration of 200 people to America
since 1821. After that it declined steadily, owing to the decay of the cloth
industry and to the increasing preponderance of dairy-farming, to 729 in 1931.
In 1934 194 people lived in the part of Corsley transferred to the new parish of
Chapmanslade, while only 49 lived in the area gained from Warminster. In spite
of that the population had risen to 745 by 1951.
"Corsley has always looked to both Frome and Warminster as market towns. Much
of its soil is suitable for either arable or pastoral farming, and the amount
given to each has varied considerably. (Footnote 24) The cloth trade flourished
chiefly in the 18th century but survived until the 1840's."

The surname Prangley appears for the first time in any known records initially
in the parish of Corsley, Wiltshire, England in mid-1600s. The burial of Gorge
Prangly in 1688 indicates that his father was in the wool
trade. However, this interpretation has recently been challenged.
The original record simply says he was buried "in wool." We have
interpreted this reference to be to his trade, however it has recently been
suggested that it may refer instead to his means of burial -- literally "wrapped
in wool." These interpretations remain a matter of ongoing discussion.
Before 1669 there are no recorded burials of any
Prangley (or variant) in
the Corsley records. Between 1608 1669 there are no recorded marriages of any
Prangley (or variant) in the Corsley records. The earliest recorded birth of a
Prangley in Wiltshire is Robert Prangling, son of George, 24 AUG 1672 in
Corsley, Wiltshire, England. This would seem to indicate that the name
Prangley arrived in Corsley sometime before 1669, probably in the period 1640-1669. The
question is from where did these Prangleys come?
It had previously been suggested that an eponymous Germanic immigrant named
Prangley had come from Europe and settled in Corsley, sometime in the late-16th
or early 17th century, perhaps connected with the wool trade. However, (as
discussed above) it now seems more likely that the theoretical family of origin
below were merely a branch of one of the nearby Prangnell families who
are found throughout the surrounding area.
So far as we have been able to determine, it appears that the
earliest generations of Prangleys are as shown below. Where the phrase "is
believed to be" is used then the reader should understand that these early
relationships are not proven but represent the combined opinions of the researchers listed below as
we jointly try to reconcile the scraps of known data.
In the 1766 Land Tax records for Frome, Somerset, England there is a residence
recorded as "Prangley House", but not occupied by anyone of the surname
Prangley. Presumably the residence was named after an earlier occupant or
the owner. This would seem to indicate that at least one branch of Prangleys
was in Frome prior to 1766.
Gorge PRANGLIN was born about 1600. He is of uncertain origin.
His wife is unknown. It is believed
that he was the father of:
-
William PRANGLIN b: ABT 1620 in England who is believed to have
married a woman named Elce. We know of no children from
this marriage.
-
Gorge PRANGLY b: ABT 1630 in England who married an unknown woman.
He is believed to have worked in the wool industry and died on 20 JUN 1688. He is
believed to have been the father of:
-
George PRANGLYN b: ABT 1668 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. His wife
is unknown. He is believed to be the father of:
-
Hannah PRANGLIN b:
ABT 16 JUN 1690 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
George PRANGLIN b:
ABT 13 APR 1693 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England who married on
19 JAN 1713/14 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Joan SINGER (of unknown
origin). Their suggested descendants are shown below as
BRANCH #1 (below).
-
John PRANGLIN b: ABT 1696 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England who is believed to
have married on 23 DEC 1722 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Anna GRATWOOD
(of unknown origin). It is believed they were the parents of the
following children. However as these children are only shown as "of John
Pranglin" it is also possible that they could be children of John, son of
Robert (#3 below).
-
Elizabeth PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: 15 SEP 1723 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
George PRANGLEY b: ABT 20 MAR 1724/25 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. George
is recorded in the Corsley records as "George, son of John Prangley". It is
not certain that he is the son of THIS John Prangley, however this seems to
be the most likely place for him. The other possibility is that he is the
son of John Pranglin, b: 1702, son of Robert Prangling, b: 1672
(below). But the name "George" seems to favour the present branch. George married on 13 OCT 1744 in
St. Margaret's Church, Corsley, Wiltshire, England
to Sarah STREATTON of unknown origin. It is believed they were the parents
of:
-
Elizabeth PRANGLEY
b: 1745 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England, of whom nothing is known. She
may be the Elizabeth Prangley who was sentenced to the prison colony in New
South Wales, Australia in 1791.
-
William PRANGLEY b: ABT 30 AUG 1730 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
Hannah PRANGLEY b: ABT 28 DEC 1732 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.
Married 16 Nov 1755 in St Margaret's
Church Corsley Wiltshire ENG,
Humphry MOORE.
Humphry: Name recorded as Umphrey Moor in Parish marriage records.
There is a Humphry Moore bapt. 16 Oct 1721, mother Mary Moore, Corsley,
Wiltshire.
-
Thomas PRANGLEY/PRANGLEN b: ABT 1670 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. His wife
is unknown. He is believed to have been the father of:
-
Thomas PRANGLEY b: 7 JAN 1693/94 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. He
is believed to be the patriarch of
BRANCH #3
(below). This is suggested based on onomastics and the fact
that no other likely Thomas Prangley has been identified. It is
possible that the Thomas Prangley of Branch #4 could be from a different
family with no birth record.
-
Jerimiah PRANGLEY b: 1698 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
Hannah PRANGLEY/PRANGLYN b: APR 1701 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
Mary PRANGLEY/PRANGLEN b: ABT 12 NOV 1705 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.
She is believed to be the Mary Prangley who married on 19 DEC 1725 to John
TAYLOR b: ABT 1700 in Berkley, Somerset, England
-
Luce PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: JUL 1707 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
William PRANGLEY/PRANGLING b: 1709 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. It is not certain that the William Prangley (a.k.a. Prangling) born in 1709 is
the father of the children shown here, however no other William Prangley (or
derivative) has otherwise been identified. In the absence of any other
contender, it is suggested that William Prangling, born 1709 in Corsley is the
father of the children shown here, however this is not verified. He is
believed to be the father of:
-
Robert PRANGLEY b: ABT 6 JUN 1731 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
Elizabeth PRANGLEY b: ABT 9 DEC 1732 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
William PRANGLEY b: ABT 23 JAN 1735/36 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
Ann PRANGLEY b: ABT 4 MAY 1739 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.

GARRETT. Uriah: Name may possibly be Gerrett.
-
James PRANGLEY b: ABT 4 DEC 1743 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
Jonah PRANGLEY b: ABT 11 JAN 1746/47 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.

-
Sarah PRANGLEY b: ABT 24 JUN 1712 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
George PRANGLIN b: 13 APR 1693 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. His
birth is shown above in the
Family of Origin. He
married on 19 JAN 1713/14 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Joan SINGER (of
unknown origin). They had the following children:
-
Joseph PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: ABT 3 JUL 1715 in Corsley,
Wiltshire, England. It is believed that this is the Joseph who married
Mary PRANGLEY b: ABT 1723 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.
- Their
descendants are shown just below.
-
Ledeor PRANGLEY b: ABT 5 MAR 1719/20 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England

-
Jeremiah YOUNG b: 22 NOV 1744 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. He married
on 20 JUN 1773 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England to Mary COOMBS b: ABT 1740 in
Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.
The Descendants of Joseph and Mary Prangley/Pranglin of Corsley,
Wiltshire.
Joseph PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: ABT 3 JUL 1715 in Corsley,
Wiltshire, England. It is believed that this is the Joseph who married
Mary PRANGLEY b: ABT 1723 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England and had the following
children. It is not known if Mary's birth name was also Prangley, or
just her married name. These children are shown to be the children of "Joseph and
Mary Prangley". It is not certain that the Joseph born in 1715 is the
father of the children shown here, however no other Joseph Prangley (or
derivative) has otherwise been identified. Thus, in the absence of any
other contender, it is suggested that he is the father of the children shown
here, however these relationships are not verified.
-

of David Udell (Bap 3/6/1739, Corsley). They married in Corsley on 24 April
1763. David died 8 Aug 1770 (aged about 31) leaving Betty his widow. They
had only one recorded child Sarah Udell (Bap 15/12/1765).

-
Jonah PRANGLEY b: ABT 22 JAN 1746/47 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.
See BELOW under Stray Branches for the
descendants of this Jonah Prangley. John Jennings' transcription
shows this Jonah as the one baptized on 11 Jan 1747 and does not show Jonah,
son of William, at all. Could the IGI be wrong?
-
Paul PRANGLEY b: ABT 16 APR 1749 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. Paul
married firstly on 3 AUG 1772 in St. Margaret's
Church, Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Betty UDELL

-
Benjamin PRANGLEY b: ABT 16 MAY 1773 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.
He lived in Leigh's Green, Corsley, Wiltshire and worked as a sawyer,
however in the 1851 census he is recorded as a blind pauper with his
second wife, Mary. It is believed that he did not have children by
his second wife.
(1) Married 21 Apr 1794 in St Margaret's Church
Corsley Wiltshire ENG, Hannah BARNES, b. 1771 in ENG. Hannah:
Married by banns.
Benjamin and Hannah had the following children:
-

-
Elizabeth PRANGLEY b: ABT 24 JAN 1802 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
Hannah PRANGLEY b: ABT 27 JUL 1806 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. It
is strongly believed that this is the Hannah Prangley who married on 24 APR
1825 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Benjamin
HYATT b: 1808 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. They lived in Leigh's
Green, Corsley next door to Benjamin and Hannah Prangley. The 1861
census shows her living next to James and Amelia Prangley, who are residing
at Corsley Wood. Hannah and Benjamin had the following children:
-
Frederick HYATT b: ABT 20 NOV 1825 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. He
married in 1857 in Chelsea, England to Emma GIRL b: ABT 1830 in England.
They had the following children:

-
Sarah HYATT b: 1846 in Corlsey, Wiltshire, England
-
Hannah HYATT b: 1849 in Corlsey, Wiltshire, England
-
Martha PRANGLEY b: ABT 10 SEP 1809 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. The IGI shows the following child born to Benjamin and Martha Prangley.
As no other contemporary Benjamin Prangley is known it is presumed to be
the same Benjamin. However the daughter couldn't be from another
marriage as it is known that Benjamin's first wife Hannah Prangley was
still alive in 1809. Thus it is presumed that the mother shown as
"Martha" could be a scribal error substituting the daughter's name, or
Martha could be a mistress and the following child illegitimate. Or
it could be a different Benjamin altogether, but no such person is known.
I presently prefer the first theory.
Benjamin married secondly to a woman named Mary, with whom Benjamin is
residing in the 1841 census. They are both shown as paupers.
-
James PRANGLEY b: ABT 6 AUG 1775 in Corlsey, Wiltshire, England. He
died as a child.
It is believed that Paul married secondly between

Elizabethan country house, maze, landscaped parkland and safari park. The
house is set in over 900 acres of parkland, landscaped by Capability Brown,

open to the public, and also claims the first safari park outside Africa.

agreed by this team to be the most likely family to place John. He
married firstly to Sarah GEORGE and secondly to Sarah STEEDS. Their

Grace PRANGLEY b: 1790 in Frome, Somerset, England
Martha PRANGLEY b: ABT 28 JUN 1761 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.
John Prangley was born in 1755 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.
As the parish records are missing for the year of his birth there is no
surviving record of his birth. He is believed to be the son of Joseph and
Mary Prangley/Pranglin of BRANCH #1 above.
John was a butcher in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. John Prangley is listed
in the papers relating to leases of land from Lord Weymouth, 2nd Viscount -- "John PRANGLEY
(at Leigh's Green) for a cottage and garden (10 luggs) 1s (leased to
John PRANGLEY the 21 July 1783)."
Records for birth and baptism of John
Prangley are not to be found in the Corsley Parish Records as the pages are
missing for the period 1753-1755. [It should be noted that, in any case, the
Parish Records do not record all births, deaths and marriages.] Possible father
of John PRANGLEY, all of whom fathered children at about this time, are:
George Prangley & Sarah Streatton m. 18
Oct 1744 - daughter, Elizabeth bapt. 18 Aug 1745 [There are no more children
recorded after 1745 - so I have discounted him as the father of John].
William Prangley - children Betty bapt. 9
Dec 1732, William bapt. 23 Jan 1736, Ann bapt. 4 May 1739, James bapt. 4 Dec
1743, Jonah bapt. 11 Jan 1747, Mary bapt. 28 Apr 1750 [There are no more
children recorded after 1750 - so I have discounted him as father].
Joseph Prangley & Mary ? - children Job
bapt. 31 Jan 1742, James bapt. 20 May 1744, Paul bapt. 16 Apr 1749, Mary bapt. 5
Jul 1752, Solomon bapt. 19 Oct 1756, Martha b. 1761 [Joseph has children either
side of the missing years, so Joseph is a likely father of John].
Lazarus Prangley & Hannah Chapman m. 14
Apr 1750 - children Mary bapt. 15 Mar 1751, Abigail bur. 14 Oct 1765, Charles
bapt. 29 Jun 1766, Abigail bapt. 27 Oct 1769, Hannah bapt. 31 Jan 1773 [There is
a big gap between 1751 and 1765, so there were probably two Lazaruses. The
second Lazarus would be too young to be the father of John.]. The most likely
candidates for the parents of John are therefore Joseph PRANGLEY and Mary ?
Papers relating to leases of land from
Lord Weymouth after the enclosures of Corsley 1783. Agreement by Corsley cottage
holders acknowledging that the several cottages and gardens in their possession
are the sole right and property of the 2nd Viscount as lord of the manor of
Corsley and are part of his lordship's waste and agree to pay an acknowledgement
for holding the cottages and gardens. The agreement lists the cottagers with a
description of the premises they hold ....... (at Temple) George PRANGLEY for a
cottage and garden (20 luggs) 2s (leased to George PRANGLEY 25 March 1757)
...... and ...... (at Leigh's Green) John PRANGLEY for a cottage and garden (10
luggs) 1s (leased to John PRANGLEY 21 July 1783). The lease for 99 years was
determinable with the lives of the said John Prangley, Nathan Prangley his son
and Sarah Steeds the daughter of Edward Steeds butcher of Downhead. [Note: A lug
or lugg is an old unit of measure also called a pole or perch, usually 16.5
feet.].
The Corsely Parish Records indicate John PRANGLEY died
aged 55 y.
John Prangley married
firstly on 18 MAY 1777 in St. Margaret's Church, Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Sarah GEORGE, and secondly on 26
DEC 1783 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Sarah STEEDS. Sarah
George is believed to have died during the birth of their third child, Jane
Prangley. Sarah Steeds was born ABT 12 JUL 1761 in
All Saints Church, Downhead, Somerset, England
as the daughter of Edward STEEDS and Mary Ann PARFITT. Edward Steeds was a butcher
from Downhead. Sarah
Steeds d. 1811 in Corsley Wiltshire ENG, buried 11 Dec 1811 in Corsley Wiltshire

John and Sarah Steeds may have moved to Frome, Somerset,
England just prior to the birth of their last son, Moses. John Prangley had the following descendants:

Nathaniel Prangley had the following children:

on 5 MAY 1822 in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England to
George CROUCH b: 6 MAY 1806 in Wiltshire, Wiltshire, England. It is
not confirmed that Sarah Prangley, daughter of Nathanial and Jane Prangley is
the same one who married George Crouch, however onomastics suggests she is a
better candidate than the other known Sarah Prangley. George and Sarah
immigrated in 1837 or 1842 to Bothwell County, Ontario, Canada, nearby to Esau
Prangley, below. Their descendants are presented on the

Neither Sarah Clifford (married William Joseph SAYERS in Tasmania in 1836) or
Maria are mentioned. As well, Tabitha's illegitimate daughter Mary BAILEY (nee
PRANGLEY) was apparently already in Tasmania (1833-1838) and two of her
children were born there before she came to South Australia.
The first Wesleyan Methodist service on
the mainland of South Australia was held in a tent near the Old Gum Tree at
Glenelg South Australia on 22 Jan 1837. It was conducted by John C. White. On
11 May 1837, fifteen people met at the home of Edward Stephens near the site
of the present Festival Theatre in Adelaide and decided to establish a
Wesleyan Methodist Society. Tabitha Wickham was one of those present.
Tabitha was also the first nurse in
South Australia. Early in 1837, an infirmary was set up on North Terrace near
Morphett St., Adelaide. Tabitha undertook to care for the inmates, and to
cook, for ten shillings a week plus rations. Later she was the first nurse at
the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Benjamin:
Married by banns with consent of parents. Witnesses Charles Clifford and
Joseph West. In the Peninsula Wars, Benjamin was with the 40th Foot Regiment
(later known as 2nd Somersetshire Regiment and now known as the Queen's
Lancashire Regiment) at the battles of Albuhera (16 May 1811), Ciudad Rodrigo
(19 Jan 1812), Badajoz (7 March-6 April 1812), and Salamanca (22 Jul 1812). He
was awarded the Military General Service Medal 1793-1814 with four clasps (one
for each battle). Benjamin was pensioned (Chelsea Pensioner) in 5 Aug 1813.
The medal was awarded in 1848, and apparently he went back to England to be
awarded the medal in person. In 1848, Benjamin was in Warminster, England.
At the Battle of Salamanca, the British,
Portuguese and Spanish lost 5,000 killed and wounded. The French lost 7,000
killed and wounded and 7,000 were taken as prisoners. The French also lost 20
guns. "Meadows Heritage" - 1983 - indicates he was a British Army Captain at
the Battle of Waterloo in the Napoleonic Wars. [This is unlikely!! In any
case, Waterloo occurred 18 Jun 1815, after Benjamin was pensioned].
The Somerset Electoral Register, Eastern
Division for both 1832 and 1835 has Benjamin Wickham leasing houses and the
Horse and Groom Inn at East Woodlands, Frome, Somerset. It seems highly likely
that this is our Benjamin given his later activities in Adelaide in 1838/39
(see below).
Benjamin, Tabitha and three of their
children Eliza, Daniel R and Lucy sailed on the "Africaine" 30 Jun 1836 and
arrived in South Australia 6 Nov 1836. Benjamin paid steerage fares. The "Africaine"
was a 3-masted barque and arrived Nepean Bay (KI) 4 Nov 1836 and then sailed
for Rapid Bay and became the first passenger ship to anchor in Holdfast Bay on
14 Nov 1836. It also carried the equipment for the first newspaper in the
Colony.
Benjamin was present at the 'Old Gum
Tree' at Glenelg for the Proclamation of South Australia by Gov. Hindmarsh.
The painting of the event by Thomas Gill was done some years after the first
ceremony, and in this painting, Benjamin is shown with his medals which he got
in 1848!
On 31 Dec 1838, Benjamin was granted a
licence to sell wine, beer and other malt liquors. He owned Wickham's Hotel
South Tce (Town Acre 691) in 1838-1839. In 1839, the property was to be 'let
or sold'. The Wickham family initially lived at Glenelg, then Adelaide. The
family later went to live at Reedbeds and eventually to McLaren Vale region.
Benjamin owned quite a lot of land at various times.
Wickham Hill is named after Benjamin
Wickham, who held the land in 1842.
In 1837 he owned Town Acres 691 on South
Terrace, 609 on Gilbert Street and 602 on Gilles Street. Allen's Almanack of
1849 has him owning 320 acres in Hd Kuitpo, 584 acres in Hd Willunga, and 84
acres in Hd Noarlunga. In Noarlunga, he owned Sections 725 and 726 on the
Onkaparinga River. In Hundred of Kuitpo, Sections 3509 and 3510, known as
Clear Hills. In Port Lincoln, half acre allotments 25, 131, 197, 237, 262,
389, 422, 474, 764, 929 and 941, and two 20 acre blocks 8 and 58. On Boston
Island (near Port Lincoln), he owned half acre lots 66 and 115. In the Hundred
of Willunga, he owned sections 568, 569, 572, 573, 574, and mentioned in his
will, he also owned sections 530, 722, 723, 533, 724, 725 and 726. The Govt.
Gazette of 6 Aug 1876 also shows sections 717, 719, 720 and 301 in the name of
Mary Ann Wickham.
There are several instances of Benjamin
running foul of the law. 13/6/1850 No. 57: Poisoning a horse - victim: James
WILSON at McLaren Vale - suspect: Benjamin Wickham arrested by Cpl. HowellL -
Discharged.
The Register of October 9, 1842:
"TEN POUND REWARD"
WHEREAS, on the night of Saturday the 17th September last, the hut of Mr B
Wickham, near to Mr Grotes station, in the neighbourhood of Willunga, was
broken into and the whole of the stores, consisting of flour, tea, sugar and
meat, with sundry other articles, taken therefrom, and, on the night of
Monday, October 3, the hut was set fire to, and totally destroyed, with goods
to the value of one hundred pounds. There are strong reasons for believing
that the same party or parties who committed the robbery were the perpetrators
of the act of incendiarism. Whoever will give such information as shall bring
the offender or offenders to justice shall receive the above reward.
(Signed) B WICKHAM
Adelaide, October 7, 1842
Benjamin's age when he died is variously
recorded; he was actually 83 when he died. A newspaper obituary at his death
indicated he was 104 years old. His age was recorded as 90 years on his death
certificate and on his headstone. The SA Biographical Index indicates born
1791, religion Methodist - this would put his age as c.84.

On 28 February 2002, an application was
made to the Development Assessment Commission by Alistair Gray for the
restoration and addition to the 1870's Benjamin Wickham Cottage, 245 Elliot
Road, McLaren Flat, Section 717 hundred of Willunga Certificate of title 5362
Folio 210. The cottage was recommended as a place of Local Heritage Value in
the Willunga District Heritage Survey 1997 and was proposed to be listed in
council's Heritage PAR. Wickham Park, had been established by Benjamin Wickham
on the Kangarilla Road at McLaren Flat. Wickham, who had arrived in South
Australia with his family on the Africane in 1836, established a farmhouse and
a barn on the property on which he both grew crops and kept livestock. Wickham
Park was purchased by George Sauerbier and in 1903 local builder Thomas
Threadgold built a new large homestead for the Sauerbier family there, next to
the existing farmhouse. In 1925 the homestead was guttered by fire, after
which it was rebuilt. The property was passed from George Sauerbier to George
Keith Sauerbier and then to his son and present owner George. Wickham Park
remains as a prominent heritage property in the district and includes not only
the stately homestead but other early farm buildings of significance. The
Willunga District Heritage Survey of 1997 shows that Wickham Park fulfills the
relevant criteria to be included on the Local Heritage List.

Fanny: Parents
Thomas and Ann Withey of Ennox Hill, Frome, Gloucestershire. Labourer.
He married ABT DEC 1848 in Frome, Somerset, England to
Fanny WITHEY b: ABT 1828 in Frome, Somerset, England. They had the
following children:
-
Frank PRANGLEY b: 28 SEP 1849 in Blunt Street, Frome, Somerset,
England. Frank Prangley is found in 1881 at 75 High Street in Bedwellty, Monmouth,
Wales working as a shoemaker. He is shown as being born in Bristol County,
England, which is adjacent to Somerset, however the 1891 census corrects
this error and shows his birth place as Frome, Somerset. In 1891 they are
living in Abergavenny, Monmouth, Wales. According to descendant, Vanessa
Firmston (nee Prangley), "The info we have is that Frank was a bit of a
B..... Edward was put into a workhouse at a young age, and took off
overseas.... travelled thru Canada, America, etc. His brother Elisha was
in the British Army and posted to India." This could explain why the 1901
census shows Frank and his wife living separately -- Frank in Abertillery,
Monmouth and Maria elsewhere in Monmouth. The list of Dr. Bernardo's
Home Children who were shipped to Canada as "orphans" includes an Albert
Prangley, age 15, shipped in 1889 on the SS Sardinian, along with his
brother Thomas, age 13. They match exactly to the sons below and would
give clarity to the preceding family tradition. This branch is being researched by
Vanessa
Firmston (nee Prangley).

had the following children:
-
Edward
Albert PRANGLEY, b 1875 in Stourbridge, Worcester, England.
d. 1958 in
Wellington NZ. According to family tradition he was
placed into a workhouse by his father, but it is now known that he was
shipped to Canada with his brother Tom in 1889 among
Dr.
Bernardo's Children. The 1901 Census for Canada shows an
Albert Prangley, believed to be this Albert Prangley, living in High
River, Alberta, Canada and working as a domestic servant to the Riley
family. He is recorded as having been born 5 JUN 1876 in Ontario. As a domestic servant, his
employers, who likely gave the census data, probably didn't know where he was
born and just assumed Ontario, or, understandably, Albert may not have told
them the truth. Sometime after 1901 he
immigrated to New Zealand where he is known to have married and had
descendants.

The following branch is being researched by Rick Hole.
Robert PRANGLEY/PRANGLY, b: ABT 1765 in Wiltshire, England married
on 9 APR 1792 in Warminster, Wiltshire, England to Hannah WAILAN b: 1765 in
Frome, Somerset, England. They had the following children and later moved
to Walcot, Bath, Somerset, England. Robert died before 1841 and Hannah is
found in 1841 as a widow with her daughter Ann and three orphaned grandchildren
(whose father is uncertain).

Warminster with their son Richard. George was working as a baker.
-
Richard PRANGLEY b: 1837 in Warminster, Wiltshire, England. He
married 22 SEP 1859 in Saint Denys, Warminster, Wiltshire, England to Margaret
MARSH b: 1839 in Warminster, Wiltshire, England. In 1851, he is living
in Warminster with his widowed mother, Sarah Prangley, b. 1798 in Stapelford,
Wiltshire, England. She is working as a shopkeeper. Her late husband is
unknown. In 1881 Richard is working
as a solicitor's clerk. Children:
-

-
Elizabeth PRANGLEY, b. ABT 10 MAY 1812 in Walcot, Bath, Somerset,
England. She married an unknown man and had descendants.
The following persons are believed to be descended from the
preceding Robert Prangley, but it is not known by which parents. The first three,
James, Julia and Maria were found in 1841 living with Hannah Prangley (nee Wailin) and are presumed to be her grandchildren. It appears that their
parents were already dead by 1841 and no birth records have been found, so it's
not known who their parents were, or even if they share the same parents.
-
James PRANGLEY, b. ABT 1826 in Walcot, Bath, Somerset,
England. In 1841 he was living in Walcot, Bath and working as a tinman's

she was residing in Walcot, Bath, Somerset, England and working as a servant in the
household of Richard Lesling, presumably unmarried. It is not certain
that she is from this family. She is placed here solely on geographic
association.
-
Alfred
PRANGLEY b: 1838 in Bath, Somerset, England.
In 1851 he is residing in what appears to be a boarding school. He is not
found in later census records. In 1841 he is shown with his sister Mary
Ann 1829 and his mother Elizabeth 1801 in St. James, Somerset.
I have in my possession a copy of the first ever
census taken on Brixton Deverill on 23 December 1791. It shows John Pranglen (a
carpenter crossed out) widower with 2 children and his sister Elizabeth. Whilst
Thomas Pranglen is not on the census, his house is occupied by tenants William
White and his wife. Added to this census, possibly later in a different hand, is
Noah Pranglen at Mrs. Pococks with her son Joseph, daughters Susanna and Mary,
and Servant Ann Hull. Mr. Pocock has Grace Ruddock with him, a servant. So what
has happened to all the Prangleys? I assume that Noah's parents died, but what
about his brothers and sister? -- c/o Jennifer Smith
William PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: ABT 1680 in Wiltshire, England. He
married on 25 MAY 1701 in Saint Denys, Warminster, Wiltshire, England to
Rachell/Rebecca KNIGHT b: ABT 1680 in England. LDS gives William's
wife's name as Rachell. Ancestry gives her name as Rebecca, with identical
children. (Interestingly, the only Rachell Knight shown in the IGI for this generation was born in 1670 in
Andover, Hampshire, England and married on 26 NOV 1691 to Adam FIGGUS, but had
no children. Could this be a second marriage for her? see Figes and
Andover entries elsewhere.) They had the following children:
-
William PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: ABT 28 SEP 1702 in Upton Scudamore,
Wiltshire, England
-
Ann PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: ABT 7 OCT 1704 in Upton Scudamore, Wiltshire,
England
-
Mary PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: ABT 10 NOV 1707 in Upton Scudamore,
Wiltshire, England
-
John PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: ABT 15 MAY 1710 in Upton Scudamore,
Wiltshire, England
-
Elizabeth PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: ABT 7 OCT 1712 in St. Denys, Warminster,
Wiltshire, England
-
Jonathan PRANGLEY/PRANGLING b: ABT 8 NOV 1714 in Bishopstrow,
Wiltshire, England
-
James PRANGLEY/PRANGLEN b: ABT 15 MAY 1717 in St. Denys, Warminster,
Wiltshire, England
-
Joseph PRANGLEY/PRANGLING b: ABT 26 JUL 1723 in Bishopstrow, Wiltshire,
England
-
Richard PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN/PRANGLING b: ABT 8 AUG 1725 in Bishopstrow,
Wiltshire, England. Richard married on 24 SEP 1748 in Saint Denys,
Warminster, Wiltshire, England to Anne WHITMARSH b: ABT 1725 in England.
They had the following children:
-
Daughter PRANGLEY b: ABT 12 FEB 1748 in Brixton Deverill, Wiltshire, England
-
Richard PRANGLEY/PRANKLY b: ABT 1750 in Wiltshire, England. No birth
record has been found for Richard Pranglin/Prangley. It is by no means
certain that the Richard Pranglin who married Elizabeth Hinton is a child of
Richard Prangley and Anne Whitmarsh. However he fits chronologically,
geographically and onomastically, and there are few enough Prangleys in
Brixton Deverill at the time to suggest that they likely descend from a
common family. Thus, it is suggested that he is the Richard Prangley
who married on 12 JUL 1779 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England to
Elizabeth HINTON b: ABT 1755 in England and had the following family:
-
Richard PRANGLEY/PRANKLEY b: 3 OCT 1779 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire,
England
-
Philip PRANGLEY/PRANKLEY b: 7 OCT 1781 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire,
England
-
Hannah PRANGLEY/PRANGLEN b: ABT 6 MAR 1785 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire,
England
-
Noah PRANGLEY b: 7 OCT 1787 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England.
In 1851 he is living with his 4th wife, Ann Jemima Sutton. They have a
19-year old, Joshua Sutton, living with them and recorded as a "son in
law". He is more likely a son by Jemima's first marriage. They are living
four doors away Noah's son, James, and Elizabeth Prangley and family.
The 1841 census shows this family with Jemima as mother and children from
the previous marriages confirming that these four marriages are all the
same Noah. Noah's birth is not found in the IGI. It was submitted by
descendant Jennifer Smith. Noah married firstly 9 AUG 1807 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire,
England to
Elizabeth ANDREWS b: ABT 1785 in England. They had the following
children:
-
Sarah Ann PRANGLEY b: ABT 13 NOV 1808 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire,
England. There is an Ann Prangley in 1851 working as a nursemaid in
the house of a "nobleman's steward" in Maiden Bradley, Wiltshire, England
about 5km west of Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England. Ann's birth place is
recorded as Warminster, Wiltshire, which is only 5km north of Brixton-Deverill.
This Sarah Ann is the only realistic candidate to be Ann, the nobleman's
steward's nursemaid. Just who this nobleman is, is uncertain. Census records
seem to indicate that his name could be Robert Stiles Jefferys, "farmer of
390 acres". The nobleman in question was most likely Edward Adolphus
Seymour, 11th Duke of Somerset, whose residence was Maiden-Bradley.
-
James PRANGLEY b: ABT 5 APR 1812 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England.
It is not certain that James is a son of Noah.
However he fits the chronology and in 1841 his is living next door to Noah in
Brixton-Deverill and there is no other known family in the area that he could
have come from. He married on 20 AUG 1838 in Brixton-Deverill,
Wiltshire, England to Elizabeth Jane LONG b: ABT 1815. 1881 census shows
him as a widower, residing with Elizabeth Brown. James and Elizabeth had
the following children:
-
Harriet Jane PRANGLEY b: ABT 23 DEC 1838 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire,
England. She married in 13 JUN
1867 in Holy Trinity, Clapham, Surrey, England to Edward PARSONS b: UNKNOWN.
-
Sarah Jane PRANGLEY b: ABT 24 MAY 1840 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire,
England. In 1881 she was living in Belmont, Warminster, Wiltshire,
unmarried and working as a domestic servant for Frederick Wright Anderson,
the curate.
-
John PRANGLEY b: ABT 30 JAN 1842 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England.
John is not found in any census records and is presumed to have died in
childhood.
-
Matilda Jane PRANGLEY b: ABT 24 DEC 1843 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire,
England. She is not found in the 1861 census and is presumed to have
died young.
-
Emily Jane PRANGLEY b: ABT 1 DEC 1849 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire,
England. She is not found in the 1861 census and is presumed to have
died young.
-
Elizabeth Jane PRANGLEY b: ABT 8 JUN 1851 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire,
England. She was residing with her parents in 1861.
-
Mary Jane PRANGLEY b: ABT 5 JUN 1853 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire,
England. She was residing with her parents in 1861.
-
Josiah PRANGLEY b: ABT 4 JAN 1857 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England.
Josiah is not found in any census records and is presumed to have died as a
child.
Noah married
secondly 23 JUL 1816 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England to
Elizabeth ELLIOT b: ABT 1795 in England, by whom he had the following
children:
-
Josiah PRANGLEY b: ABT 27 JUL 1817 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England
-
Louisa PRANGLEY b: 13 SEP 1818 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England
-
Caroline PRANGLEY b: 7 MAY 1820 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England
-
Leonard Hinton PRANGLEY, b. ABT 1821 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England.
Leonard married on 15 FEB 1849 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England to
Sarah COLLINS. They have not been found in 1851 or later. He is
believed to be the Leonard Pranglin who moved to Essex County, Ontario,
Canada.
- Descendants to be added.
-
William PRANGLEY b: 1823 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England.
Mother is uncertain. OneWorldTree claims William's father was Noah and his
mother was Ann and his sister was Elizabeth (shown here below as the
daughter of Jemima). William married
Elizabeth GILMOUR (or PIKE?) b: 1824 in Midsomer, Norton, England. They had
the following children:
-
Eliza PRANGLEY b: 2 JUN 1848 in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England. She
died as a child.
-
Joseph S.
J. PRANGLEY b: 1850 in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England.
- Thomas Mortimer PRANGLEN m Emiliy WILSON
- Phyllis Adelaide PRANGLEN, b 1909

-
Emily Jane PRANGLEY b: 1852 in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England.
She died as a child.
-
James PRANGLEY b: 1857 in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England. He
died as a youth without marrying.
-
John PRANGLEY b: 15 JUN 1859 in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England.
He married on 9 OCT 1886 in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England to
Elizabeth B. TAYLOR b: 1869 in Lacock, Wiltshire, England. THey
had the following children:
-
Eliza Ann PRANGLEY b: 29 JAN 1889 in Welton, Midsomer Norton, Somerset,
England
-
Joseph PRANGLEY b: OCT 1890 in Welton, Midsomer Norton, Somerset,
England
-
Annie PRANGLEY b: 1892 in Welton, Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England
-
Bessie PRANGLEY b: 1894 in Welton, Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England
-
William PRANGLEY b: 1897 in Welton, Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England
-
Emily PRANGLEY b: 1899 in Welton, Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England
-
Minnie PRANGLEY b: JUN 1901 in Welton, Midsomer Norton, Somerset,
England
-
Doris PRANGLEY b: 1904 in Welton, Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England
-
Emma PRANGLEY b: 1860 in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England
Noah married thirdly 6 JAN 1824 in Brixton-Deverill,
Wiltshire, England to
Mary HARRIS b: ABT 1800 in England. They had the following children:
-
Joshua PRANGLEY, b. ABT 1832 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England.
Noah married
fourthly 17 MAR 1835 in Deverill Hill, Wiltshire, England to
Jemima SUTTON b: ABT 1810 in England. The 1841 census shows this family
with Jemima as mother and children from the previous marriages confirming that
these are all the same Noah. Noah and Jemima had the following children:
-
Elizabeth Ann PRANGLEY b: ABT 16 APR 1837 in Brixton-Deverill,
Wiltshire, England
-
Alfred PRANGLEY, b. ABT 1840 in Brixton-Deverill, Wiltshire, England.
-
See also Joseph Prangley b 1796 in Wiltshire, residing
in London who had a son Richard Hatton Prangley. If Hatton is a
corruption/error for Hinton or vice versa, then it could suggest Joseph as a
strong candidate to be a child of Richard Pranglen and Elizabeth Hinton.
-
William PRANGLEY b: ABT 15 JUL 1750 in Brixton Deverill, Wiltshire, England
-
Susannah PRANGLEY b: ABT 22 OCT 1752 in Brixton Deverill, Wiltshire, England
-
Grace PRANGLEY b: ABT 10 DEC 1758 in Brixton Deverill, Wiltshire, England
-
John PRANGLEY b: ABT 11 APR 1761 in Brixton Deverill, Wiltshire, England.
It is believed that, but not confirmed that the John Prangley who married
each of these women was the same John Prangley born in 1761 in Sutton Veny
and that he is the same John Prangley born son of Richard Prangley bap in
1761 in Brixton Deverill. It is assumed that his first wife died in
childbirth and that he married almost immediately thereafter and that the
child of his first marriage was born before, but baptized after his second
marriage. Sutton Veny is about 2km SW of Warminster. It is suggested
that John married firstly on 2 MAR 1783 in Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England
to Mariah GULLIFER b: ABT 1760 in England. They had the following
child:
-
Ann PRANGLEY b: 13 AUG 1786 in Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England (LDS
submission)
It is suggested that John Prangley may have married secondly on 31
JUL 1786 in Moncton Deverill, Wiltshire, England to
Anne TURNER b: ABT 1760 in England. John Prangley and
Anne Turner had the following children:
-
Jane PRANGLEY b: ABT 30 DEC 1787 in Kingston-Deverill, Wiltshire,
England. Married 16 JUL 1809 in Deverill Kingston, Wiltshire, England
to

England
-
Margaret PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: ABT 12 MAY 1728 in Brixton Deverill,
Wiltshire, England
The following families are believed to tie into this branch above but by
presently unknown means:
Thomas PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: ABT 1715 in Wiltshire, England. He
married on 24 JUL 1743 in Saint Denys, Warminster, Wiltshire, England to Anne

married on 19 JUN 1790 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Elizabeth SINGER b:
ABT 1765 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. They had the following children:
-
Elijah Baugley PRANGLEY b: ABT 8 JUL 1791 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. 1841 census in Dartford,
Kent, shows that Elijah was born outside the county. Elijah married on 12 NOV
1815 in Dartford, Kent, England to
Caroline TAGG b: ABT 1800 in England. In 1841 he was working as a
bricklayer and the family were living in Dartford. Elijah and his

-
Rebecca PRANGLEY b: 1841 in Dartford, Kent, England. In 1851 she is
working as a servant to Matthew Weir in Woolwich, Kent. She is shown as born

there is no proof that she came from this family.
-
Amelia PRANGLEY b: 1846 in Dartford, Kent, England
-
Jacob PRANGLEY b: ABT 1793 in England.
Based solely on geography it is suggested that
Jacob could be a brother of this family. Jacob married on 24

They had the following child:
-
Mary Ann PRANGLEY b: 1831 in Dartford, Kent, England. Mary married James

parents. The two Jonah Prangleys
are:

and Mary Prangley.
The following information is known about marriages and descendants for one,
the other, or both of these Jonah Prangleys. It is impossible to know
which combination of the following families belongs to which of the above Jonah
Prangleys at this time. Their spouses and children are:
-
Jonah PRANGLEY b: ABT 1747 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. He
married Mary POTTER(?), whose surname is not know for certain but is suggested
by the names of her children. It is also suggested that her father might
have been named Nathaniel Potter, however no records of a matching Mary and
Nathaniel Potter have been found so far. They had the following children:
-
Jonah PRANGLEY b: ABT 16 MAY 1773 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.
John shows this Jonah as the following:
Jonah PRANGLEY b: ABT 1765 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. He married
on 29 MAY 1791 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to Elizabeth SNELGROVE b: ABT

-
Sarah PRANGLEY b: 10 MAY 1804 and baptized 3 NOV 1805 in Corsley,
Wiltshire, England. It is believed that she is the Sarah Prangley who married
on 5 MAY 1822 in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England to
George CROUCH b: 6 MAY 1806 in Wiltshire, Wiltshire, England. It is
not confirmed that Sarah Prangley, daughter of Nathanial and Jane Prangley is
the same one who married George Crouch, however onomastics suggests she is a
better candidate than the other known Sarah Prangley. George and Sarah
immigrated in 1837 or 1842 to Bothwell County, Ontario, Canada, nearby to Esau
Prangley, below. Their descendants are presented on the
Canadian Prangley Page.
-

-
Jonah PRANGLEY b: ABT 1747 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. The
following daughters are shown with only their father noted as Jonah
Prangley and no mother given. It is impossible to know which Jonah is
their father or even whether they share the same father. They could be
daughters of Mary Potter or another woman (or women). It is possible
that Jane and Jean below may be the same person with conflicting transcription
records.
-
Jane PRANGLEY b: ABT 5 APR 1769 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.

-

The following "branches" represent families that have been found in the IGI
parish records collection or the 1881 census on line or the 1871/1861/1851
censuses at Ancestry.com, that have not been
connected to any of the major branches shown above. It is hoped that
through future research many of these branches will be able to be connected to
those above. The information shown below is not verified.
John PRANGLEY/PRANGLIN b: ABT 1695 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England.
He married on 6 MAY 1719 in Fareham, Hampshire, England to Mary CATE b: ABT
1695 in England. They had the following children:
-
Richard PRANGLEY b: ABT 5 JUL 1719 in Fareham, Hampshire, England
-
Mary PRANGLEY b: ABT 14 MAY 1721 in Fareham, Hampshire, England
Hanah or Elizabeth PRANGLEY b: ABT 1700 in Wiltshire, England.
Three possible origins are known for this Hanah. She could be: 1. born Abt. 16
Jun 1690 as the daughter of George Prangley; 2. born Apr 1701 as the daughter
of Thomas Prangley; 3. a widow married to one of the earlier Prangleys whose
identity is unknown. Her name at the time of her wedding is given as
Hanah Prangley. John Jennings transcriptions show her name at death as
Elizabeth Minor. She married on 27 DEC 1722 in Corsley, Wiltshire,
England to Frances MINOR b: ABT 1700 in England. They had the following
child after which Hanah/Elizabeth died.
-
Frances MINOR b: ABT 31 JUL 1726 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
Robert PRANGLEY b: ABT 1700 in Wiltshire, England. He married on
2 JUN 1728 in St. Edmunds, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England to Sarah CREW.
Lazarus PRANGLEY b: ABT 1720 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. He married
firstly on 14 APR 1750 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England to
Hannah CHAPMAN b: ABT 1730 in Wiltshire, England. They had the following
children. The ten year gap between the first and second child strongly
suggests that we may be looking at two different families, possibly two
different marriages for the same Lazarus to two different women both named
Mary, or possibly two different Lazaruses, or missing children.
-
Mary PRANGLEY b: ABT 15 MAR 1750/51 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
Jane PRANGLEY b: ABT 4 OCT 1761 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
Elizabeth PRANGLEY b: ABT 18 SEP 1763 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
Abigail PRANGLEY b: ABT 14 OCT 1765 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
Charles PRANGLEY b: ABT 29 JUN 1766 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
Abigail PRANGLEY b: ABT 27 SEP 1769 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
Hanah PRANGLEY b: ABT 31 JAN 1773 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
As no other Lazarus Prangley is known, he is believed to have married
secondly (or thirdly) BET 1773 AND 1782 to ELIZA b: ABT 1750 in England.
Or this could be a son Lazarus, b 1752-1760 and not recorded. They had the following children:
-
John PRANGLEY b: BET 1773 AND 1782 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
-
James PRANGLEY
(see James 1785 below) b: ABT 10 FEB 1782 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England
As the name Lazarus appears nowhere else it seems likely that the following
Jacob and Lazarus are descended from the preceding Lazarus by some means:
Jacob PRANGLEY b: 1793 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. Residing in
1841 and 1861 in Leigh's Green, Corsley, Wiltshire, England working as an agricultural
labourer. He married
SARAH b: 1806 in Dilton Marsh, Wiltshire, England. (transcribed as "Langley"
in 1841). By geography is probably a grandson/nephew of Joseph Prangley
and Mary Prangley, shown above, but by which son is uncertain.
-
Lazarus PRANGLEY b: 1823 in Corsley, Wiltshire, England. In 1881
Lazarus is living with his second wife in Westbury Leigh, Wiltshire, England.
He is working as a general labourer and shows no children. It is
believed that it was this Lazarus Prangley who was accosted by petty thieves
in 1844. For a transcript of the trial click

All of the known Prangleys who lived in the United States of America prior to
1880 appear to be descended from the Canadian Prangleys noted above, with the
following exceptions. All American Prangley births and marriages in the
IGI and all occurrences of Prangleys in the 1880 census have been accounted for
among the descendants of the Canadian Prangleys except for the following:
Pvt. William PRANGLEY, cited in the Archives of
Maryland 1775-83, Vol 18, 20 MAY 1778 as a veteran of the war in Gunby's
Regiment, and in the 7th Maryland Regiment 19 MAY 1778-1 NOV 1780.
Robert PRANGLIN and Susannah MCKEE were married in 1808 in Wilkinson,
Mississippi. No children have been identified for them
Joseph or Josiah or Jonah PRANGLIN, b 1823 in England. He is found in 1850 Columbus, Muscogee, Georgia -- Jonah Pringle 27m b
England, plasterer, Jane A Pringle 22f b South Carolina, Ann E Pringle 2 b
Georgia. Census records appear to give his name as Jonah, however recent
descendant research submitted to us indicates that his may actually have been
Josiah -- the two names would appear very similar when written by hand.
They had the following children:
-
Hannah E. PRANGLIN b: 1848 in Georgia, USA. She married on 24 JUN 1868
in Putnam, Georgia, USA to Coe. H. H. COATES/COOTS b: ABT 1845. They had
the following children:
-
Alfred H. COATES/COOTS b: 1872 in Georgia, USA
-

shows him with a Mrs. Bessie Pranglin (presumably his mother) on 35 acres. John
and Jane are believed to
have had the following children:

-

From the history of Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia
1827-1865, by John H Martin, publ 1874 (http://djvued.libs.uga.edu/F294xC7xM3/1f/history_of_columbus_ga.txt)
The following records were all transcribed by the author from original
handwritten registers. No record has been found of any Joseph Pranglin in
census records. Josiah and Joseph are both recorded as plasterers.
Thus it seems likely that they are the same person
- 1840 - Joseph Pranglen listed as a plasterer
- 1843 - Josiah Pranglin, listed as member of the
Columbus Hook And Ladder Fire Company
- 1845 - Mr. Josiah Pranglin, an active and valuable
member of the Fire Company, had a wall to fall on him and break both his
thighs and otherwise injure him. He got well.
- 2 JUN 1846, Josiah Pranglin m Jane Ann Giddings
- 17 MAY 1855, death of child of Joseph Pranglin
- 10 OCT 1857, death of Josiah Pranglen
- 20 OCT 1857, death of Mrs Josiah Pranglo
- 27 SEP 1858, death of child of Joseph Pranglin
None found in 1830 or 1840, no additional found in 1850
James Prangley, b. 1832 in England. This family is found in the 1900 US census in Lancaster,
Pennsylvania. They are not found in earlier census records and are
presumed to have immigrated sometime shortly before 1900, however confoundingly,
they show births in Pennsylvania as early as 1865. At this point it is not
known how they are related to any known
branch above. He appears to be widowed at this point. He had the
following children:
-
James J. Prangley, b.1865 in Pennsylvania. Married Catharine,
whose whose maiden name is unknown. She was born 1870 in Pennsylvania.
Children:
- James Prangley, b. 1896 in Pennsylvania
- Laurance C. Prangley, b. 1898 in Pennsylvania
- Lida Prangley, b. 1874 in Pennsylvania
- Bessie Prangley, b. 1875 in Pennsylvania

= This person has known descendants.
ABT = Where a precise birth date is shown above preceded by "Abt" or
"about", then the date given represents the date of baptism, where the exact
date of birth is not known.
|
Thus, "ABT 3 DEC 1795" means the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her
exact birth date is unknown.
|
|
Whereas "ABT 1795" means that there is no information on the person's birth date
and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime
around 1795.
