Charts Jasinsky Descendancy
Birth*circa 1724Colonel Georg Christoph Von Jaschinsky was born circa 1724 at Lithuania.1
Burial*1790He was buried in 1790 at Kaleningrad (formerly Koenigsburg), Russia, M; A Search for the Lost Cities of the German Reich
For nearly 700 years Konigsberg was the easternmost outpost of the German empire and was the home of Immanual Kant. Now it is the westernmost point in Russia. In August 1944, the center of the city was destroyed by a four day RAF bombing raid. What the British didn't destroy, the Soviet troops finished off in April 1945. Over 90% of the city lay in ruins. The following year it and the surrounding region of Northern East Prussia was incorporated into the USSR. The area was renamed after the Bolshevik revolutionary and later President of the Supreme Soviet Presidium, Mikhail Kalinin, who was responsible for implementing Stalin's repressive policies. The area bears his name because his death in 1946 occurred just when the authorities needed to rename the city and region. By 1948, the last German refugees left and the city was closed to foreigners until 1991. Kaliningrad exists because of the military. Newly independent Lithuania considers the large presence of Russian soldiers in this region so close to its borders a threat to its stability.

The first thing that hit me at the Kaliningrad station was my inability to make sense of the written language. All signs were in Cyrillic. No one spoke English and, though I wanted to take care of my advance reservations to Lithuania, it was impossible to buy a ticket. I couldn't even tell which window sold international tickets! I walked outside in frustration and was greeted by a statue of Kalinin. I also found a taxi driver and had him take me to my hotel. My Lonely Planet guide said prices would be $.05 per kilometer. I paid $10 to go three kilometers, but it was well worth it. I was booked at the Hansa which turned out to be an Austrian run boat-hotel on the Pregolya River running through the center of the city..The accommodations were somewhat confining, but for $136 a night, who could complain? A beautiful clerk at the front desk spoke some English and so did the house taxi driver, a Russian named Mikhail.

I realized I was famished and had a meal in the restaurant on board. After lunch, I had Mikhail take me to a currency exchange to get some Rubles. With local currency in hand, I had Mikhail take me to the station and act as a translator to enable me to purchase my forward ticket. Upon my return to the Hansa I took off on foot to explore the city.

I crossed the river to head north to what the map showed to be the center of the city. Kaliningrad is unlike any other city in the world. Pre-war, it was a typical densely packed city. After the war, with the expulsion of the German population, it was never rebuilt. Consequently, vast open spaces exist in the center.

Konigsberg was founded 800 years ago with the construction of a mammoth castle on the banks of the Pregolya. The castle was bombed during the war and remained untouched for two decades and then was dynamited because it was considered a "fascist monument." In its place stands the unfinished H-shaped House of the Soviets, a particularly ugly high-rise architectural monument to the Soviet era. North of this monstrosity I found a park with a statue of Mother Russia and, on a facing side, a statue of Lenin, probably the only such remaining standing statue in all of Russia.

I felt that I was in a time warp. Western influences were now making themselves felt. People walked around with cellular phones, but attractive girls wore mini-skirts in the style of the early '70's. "Techno" music was pervasive, yet the population, being all Russian, was alien to its development. All of the tourists were elderly Germans seeking a link to their past. The tourist shop in the Hotel Kaliningrad had souvenirs and maps all marked in German with city shown as Konigsberg. This would have been unheard of just five years ago.

I stopped at a cafe and had a beer, but didn't order food as I couldn't read the menu and no one spoke English. I then went to the recommended Bar Italy and had a terrible plate of Lasagna. I stopped at another cafe for a popular Scandinavian brewed beer known as "KB" to wash the taste away. The beer was very light, but it served its purpose. I returned to a cold room at the Hansa and hit the sack.

On Monday, after breakfast, I continued my walking tour searching for the few remaining vestiges of the German era. I again walked north and hit the University area and found a statue of Kant. Nearby was one of the most fascinating museums I have ever seen, known simply as the Bunker Museum. It was the 1945 German command post, set underground, during the Soviet assault on Konigsberg. The various rooms of the museum, originally bunkers at the command post, trace the assault with pictures diagrams and very eerie small scale reproductions of parts of the city center as they were during the fighting. The elderly female custodians seemed very impressed to have a visitor from Chicago. Afterwards, I retraced my steps to the south and looked closely at the House of the Soviets. Close by, in temporary structures, are up-scale Western style shops. I crossed the river and saw an old 14th century Gothic cathedral in back of which is Kant's grave. Only the shell of the cathedral stands, but privately financed restoration is in progress. Nearby is the old stock exchange, an Italian renaissance-style building dating to 1870-75 built on a foundation of 2,000 tree trunks. It now serves as the "Culture House of Sailors" from the merchant marine.

It was time for lunch, so I wandered back to the cafe I first stopped at the day before, but this time fortified with the Cyrillic translation for "pelmeni" a dish consisting of round, meat stuffed pasta. This sufficed for a decent meal. Afterwards, I found the only other remaining German remnants, the Brandenburger city gate, and further south the King's gate and Sackheimer gate. These remnants are all that remains of the fortified city walls constructed during the Swedish wars of 1626-34.

After breakfast on Tuesday morning, Mikhail was waiting to take me to the train station for my departure to Lithuania. He was very cordial and gave me a quick tour of the south side of the city before we said goodbye.

The last of the old German cities was the Lithuanian port city of Klaipeda, known as Memel in German days.

Memel, like Danzig, was severed from the German Reich at the end of World War I and made a "free city" under French administration. Lithuania seized it in 1923 and held it until Hitler exerted pressure to have it returned to Germany in 1939.

On the train to Klaipeda, I shared a compartment with a drunk Lithuanian soldier and two older women. The soldier had a liter can of Faxe beer and gave me a smaller can. I reciprocated by buying him a beer from the snack car, but the soldier passed out before finishing it. One of the ladies surprised me by asking in English where I was from. When I replied "Chicago," she said she lived near the intersection of 71st and California, also in Chicago. I was dumbfounded. It turned out that she emigrated to the U.S.A. five years earlier and was on a return visit. She and the other lady were spending the weekend on the coast. I marveled at the smallness of the world.

Klaipeda is a relatively small city of 20,000 populations. It suffered some damage in 1945, but shows no signs of it today. It has small old town area which I toured and saw the Klaipeda Theater dating from 1820. In 1939 Hitler spoke from the balcony of this theater to announce to a cheering crowd that Memel had been reincorporated in the German Reich. Today, there was only a small crowd of children with their parents attending a private performance there. I stopped at a nearby cafe for pancakes and a local draft beer.

Afterwards, I took a seven minute ferry ride to the northern end of the Neringa Spit, a sliver of land extending about 60 miles southerly and divided in the middle by the Russian border of the Kaliningrad Oblast. The Baltic Sea is to the west and the Courland Lagoon to the east. I took a minibus to Nida, a former German resort city at the southern end of the Lithuanian half of the spit. At this time of year, it was very quiet. The few tourists were elderly Germans and , like in Kaliningrad, tourist maps and signs were in German. The noted author Thomas Mann had a summer residence here in the early 1930s and the house is now a museum. It is well worth visiting. It contains some vintage photos from the 1930s plus some contemporary artwork. It is, though, a relic of an earlier time.

Upon my return to Klaipeda, I found a cafe near my B&B and had a veal cutlet dinner and tried bottles of Baltijos and Kalnipilus beer, both decent Lithuanian brews. I noted that the city still shows a heavy influence of German architecture even though the population is almost entirely Lithuanian.

As I was leaving in the morning, this marked the end of my odyssey in searching out remnants of the German Reich. While there is not much left except for elderly Germans searching for their roots, the four cities visited -- Stettin, Danzig, Konigsberg and Memel -- were fascinating studies in their own right. Under Polish, Russian and Lithuanian administrations, they are charting different courses. Stettin and Danzig now seem almost typically Polish cities while the other two have yet uncertain futures. Their ultimate fate will hinge on the future of East-West relations and the political settlement of the Kaliningrad Oblast.
