Rushsylvania Loses a Leading Citizen - The Family Left - Plans for the Funeral Are Not yet Completed.

Rushsylvania, May 15 George O. Day, one of the leading citizens of this place, for many years, died suddenly at 8 o'clock last evening and the news of his death gave the community a distinct shock.

He was stricken with heart disease at his sawmill at about 6 o'clock and being taken home in a buggy lived but two hours after reaching there, all efforts of physicians being in vain.

A wife an two children remain, Miss Aletta Day, who teaches school in the township, an Stewart Day who is located in Dayton. Two brothers, J.C. Day of Detroit, and J.R. Day of Rushsylvania, and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Grabiel, of Rochester, Mich., are also left.

The deceased was born in Licking county, Ohio, 73 years ago, and came to Logan county when in boyhood years. He served in the Civil war and during his residence in this township followed flour milling for a number of years and later engaged in the sawmill business. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and one of the men who always stood for the best interests of this community and was regarded as one of Rushsylvania's leading citizens for a number of years. No one could be taken who would be more generally missed. Upright and industrious, he was ever happiest when doing for his family or his fellow citizensd.

The funeral will be held at the Presbyterian curch Saturday morning at an hour not yet set.5

We cannot review the events of his life for our lives reach not so far back, but he now having fallen asleep we may say that he served heis generation, and respect him together with other whose lives in pioneer days made many of the blessings of our day possible.

Engineer at the Saw-Mill of George Day

Met his Death Yesterday in a Horrible Manner

G.W. Grabiel, engineer at the saw-mill of George Day, near Rushsylvania, met his death yesterday in a horrible manner. In some unaccountable way the young man was caught by the drive-belt of the engine and instantly killed, being mutiliated almost beyond recognition. No one was with him in the engine room at the time of the accident, but it is supposed that he must have made nine revolutions of the wheel, from the fact that there are nine cuts on his head, made by the same instrument, each a little higher than the other. The neck, back, one arm and one leg were found broken.

Deceased was 27 years of age, and was an exemplary young man, generally respected.

Intelligence of the accident reached the Daily Examiner yesterday just as we were going to press, and the matter was briefly given to our readers.

Mr. Grabiel had jus insured himself against accidents in some insurance company.3

Former teacher devoted to students and family

The Herald

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday for Adele D. Liburdi of South Pymatuning Township. She passed away at her home surrounded by her family at 3:21 p.m. Monday, March 21, 2011, after an extended illness. She was 80.

Mrs. Liburdi was born March 15, 1931, in Sharon to Ernest and Susanna Fleischer Dicke, who preceded her in death.

She graduated from Farrell High School and continued her education at Thiel College, Greenville, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in 1953.

She was a member of the Beta Sigma Omicron sorority and was selected by the student body to be a May Queen attendant for the Thiel College Spring Festival.

She met her husband, Samuel C. Liburdi, a now retired teacher, sports coach and administrator, while teaching in the Sharpsville School System. They married on June 4, 1955, in St. Joseph Church in Sharon.

After graduation from Thiel College, she entered the teaching profession where she enjoyed more than 28 years teaching, inspiring and mentoring her students in the Greensburg and Sharpsville Area School systems.

While her husband was serving with the U.S. Army, she was employed by the Army Educational Services in Fort Meade, Md., in support to President Eisenhower’s directive to raise the education standards of military personnel. There she received Army commendation for her achievement of all training and evaluation goals for military performance.

While at Sharpsville, Adele taught several different subjects including German, general science and biology, and instituted a curriculum in German language, as well as served as the Honors Biology Course advisor.

She was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association.

Her leisure time was spent enjoying the outdoors and introducing her three children and six grandchildren to the wonders of nature, plants and animals.

She was “mom” to several cats, dogs and fish that preceded her in death. As an avid gardener, she enjoyed adding home-grown herbs and vegetables to her delicious recipes. Adele also liked to go shopping with her daughter and teacher friend; antique auctions were her favorite.

She had special memories from her vacations to Florida with family where she enjoyed the sun, surf and marine life.

She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church, Sharpsville.

Adele is survived by her husband of 55 years: two sons, Retired Col. Sam Liburdi, U.S. Air Force, and his wife Alicia, Madison, Ala; Matthew Liburdi and his wife Leslie, Hermitage; and daughter, Elise Boyd and her husband Jim, Hermitage. Grandchildren include Erin and Adrienne Liburdi; Mason and Ava Liburdi; and Kyle and Haley Boyd.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sharon Regional Health System Hospice, 2320 Highland Road, Hermitage 16148.
